Summary: In this study, a HPLC-DAD method was developed to separate and determine five major biflavonoids in ginkgo. Tissue-specific profiling revealed that biflavonoids were not detected in plant parts not in direct contact with the environment. Leaves had the highest total biflavonoids content, with sciadopitysin being the predominant compound, while amentoflavone was the predominant biflavonoid in the bark.

Summary: The polar extracts and essential oils of sea fennel cultivated in central Italy were analyzed. The extracts contained 21 bioactive compounds, with 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid being the most abundant. Melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep/wake cycle, was identified for the first time in sea fennel extract. The essential oil was mainly composed of monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes. This study highlights the potential use of sea fennel as an edible plant and a source of nutraceutical compounds.

Summary: The phenolic profiles and other major metabolites in European pear juices were investigated using UHPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS and GC-FID. A total of 39 phenolic compounds were detected, and the content variations were mainly dependent on the cultivar. The genetic background and breeding selections also played a role in the chemical compositions. The results provide important information for industry and pear breeding.

Summary: This study investigated the formation mechanism of Pinotin A in aged red wine using experimental and theoretical approaches. A three-step reaction mechanism involving reversible addition reaction, decarboxylation, and autooxidation was proposed and verified, with the autooxidation step playing a crucial role in the overall reaction.

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient isolation and transient expression system for ginkgo protoplasts was established. A large number of intact and homogeneous ginkgo mesophyll protoplasts were successfully isolated using 2% cellulase and 0.25% pectinase in 0.4 M mannitol. The transformation efficiency of the protoplasts reached 40% when the concentration of the polyethylene glycol 4000 solution was 30%-40% (w/v). This system provides a technical platform for the identification and analysis of ginkgo gene functions, partially compensating for the limitations associated with the lack of a genetic transformation system.

Summary: A specific method using real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was developed to identify/quantify Styphnolobium japonicum as an adulterant in ginkgo-containing products. The method showed acceptable performance parameters with a sensitivity down to 0.02 pg of DNA. It was applied to commercial herbal infusions, revealing one sample tested positive for S. japonicum but below the quantification limit, suggesting inadvertent contamination rather than intentional adulteration.

Summary: This study focused on the simultaneous determination of polyphenolic compounds in Cissus quadrangularis using UHPLC-PDA-MS, obtaining fingerprints of stem and leaf extracts and characterizing polyphenolics through LC-QToF analysis. Over 40 components were structurally correlated from LC-QToF spectra, and a simple, fast HPTLC method was developed for qualitative analysis and quality assessment of dietary supplements.

Summary: The location, harvest time, and age of the plant all have significant effects on the terpene lactone content in Ginkgo biloba leaves. It is recommended to plant Ginkgo biloba in northern and western regions for optimal terpene lactone collection, and October is suggested as the appropriate time for leaf harvesting due to the highest concentration of ginkgolide A, B, C, and bilobalide in samples.

Summary: In this study, 69 GbR2R3-MYB genes were identified and classified into 33 groups based on their amino acid sequence and gene structure characteristics. Expression profiling in different tissues and developmental stages revealed temporal and spatial expression patterns, with specific genes showing responses to abiotic stresses and hormonal exposures. The investigation of GbR2R3-MYB19 indicated its nuclear localization and transcriptional activity, suggesting potential roles in the regulation of biological processes.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential industrial applications of various Acacia species by examining their chemical composition, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Among the studied species, A. pycnantha exhibited a higher concentration of total phenolic compounds and displayed notable antibacterial activity. Vibrational spectroscopy was a reliable method for distinguishing between species.

Summary: In this study, cryo-TOF-SIMS/SEM was used to investigate the distribution of lignans and lignan glucosides in Ginkgo biloba stems. The most abundant lignan glucoside, olivil DG, was found to be mainly distributed in the phloem, ray parenchyma cells, and pith of Ginkgo biloba. The comparative accumulation of olivil DG provided insights into its transport pathways and storage sites in Ginkgo biloba. These findings contribute to the understanding of the biological functions of lignans and lignan glucosides.
