Objective To investigate the association between birth defect, and dietary nutrient intake in a high risk area of China. Methods A dietary survey was performed and serum folic acid was measured in women whose pregnancy was affected by neural tube defects (NTDs) or unaffected by any birth defects (BDs) in Zhongyang and Jiaokou Counties in Shanxi Province of China. Results The local average consumption of foods including dark green vegetables, fruits, fat and meat, and nutrient intake (e.g. energy, protein, retinol, riboflavin, vitamin E, and selenium) were lower than the national average level. In women of childbearing age, these regions, the intake of nutrients was much lower than the recommended nutrient intake (9%-77%). The case-control dietary nutrition study of women whose pregnancy was affected by BDs (including NTDs and congenital heart defects) demonstrated that, in early pregnancy, adequate nutrition (i.e. eating meat, fresh vegetables, fruit more than once a week) was a protective factor, while eating germinated potatoes was a risk factor. The geometrical mean (p5-p95) of serum folic acid in women with NTD birth defects was 9.6 nmol/L (3.6, 23.03), which was significantly lower than that in normal women (14.03 nmol/L). Conclusion Women of childbearing age in the two counties of Shanxi Province, China, have a marked insufficient intake of some nutrients, especially folic acid, zinc, vitamins A and B12. This nutrient deficiency may be an important risk factor for the high prevalence of birth defects in these regions. Therefore, adequate dietary nutrition in early pregnancy can prevent BDs.

Effects of household cooking with clean energy on the risk for hypertension among women in Beijing

Qingping Liu, Gang Li, Le Zhang, Jufen Liu, Jing Du, Bing Shao, Zhiwen Li

Summary: The study indicates that cooking with clean energy may increase the risk of developing hypertension, with cooking frequency, time spent cooking, and cooking index all positively correlated with the risk. Both using mainly electricity and natural gas for cooking were associated with an increased risk for hypertension. Additionally, the cooking index was related to plasma levels of cholesterol and other biomarkers, which in turn were associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension after adjusting for confounding factors.

Summary: This study found that using coal or biomass stoves for cooking is associated with an increased risk of red blood cell folate insufficiency among pregnant women. Promoting the use of clean energy and proper ventilation, especially in rural areas, is crucial for improving the health of pregnant women and their offspring.

Prenatal uranium exposure and risk for fetal neural tube defects: A case-control study in women living in a rural area of northern China

Shengju Yin, Tian Tian, Chengrong Wang, Di Wang, Xin Pi, Mengyuan Liu, Lei Jin, Jufen Liu, Linlin Wang, Zhiwen Li, Aiguo Ren, Chenghong Yin

Summary: The study found that uranium exposure may increase the risk of fetal neural tube defects, with a significantly higher risk for NTDs when uranium concentration exceeds the median value. Compared to the lowest quartile of uranium concentration, the risk of NTDs increased by 1.36-fold, 1.77-fold, and 3.60-fold for the second, third, and fourth quartiles, respectively.

Impact of maternal nutrition during early pregnancy and diet during lactation on lactoferrin in mature breast milk

Summary: This study found that women with lower albumin levels in early pregnancy had higher levels of lactoferrin in mature breast milk, while TSH levels were not related to lactoferrin levels. Additionally, dietary intake had an impact on lactoferrin concentrations in milk, with egg intake showing a positive association with lactoferrin levels.

A High Concentration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Umbilical Cord Tissue is Associated with an Increased Risk for Fetal Neural Tube Defects

Summary: This study found that prenatal exposure to PAHs may increase the risk for fetal neural tube defects. Specifically, concentrations of four PAHs above the median of all participants were significantly associated with an increased NTD risk. Additionally, the use of an indoor stove for heating and use of coal or wood for cooking were positively correlated with PAH levels in cord tissue.

Vitamin B12 and gestational diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Xue Chen, Yushan Du, Shuangbo Xia, Zhiwen Li, Jufen Liu

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the relationship between vitamin B-12 and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed that low vitamin B-12 concentration in the second or third trimester of pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of GDM. Vitamin B-12 deficiency was also found to increase the risk for GDM. Additionally, an increased ratio of high folate to low vitamin B-12 in serum was associated with an increased risk of GDM.

Summary: This study examined the association between arsenic exposure and neural tube defects (NTDs) and found that arsenic exposure is a risk factor for NTDs. However, this risk can be attenuated by folic acid supplementation.

Summary: Prenatal exposure to specific heavy metals, especially mercury and lead, is significantly associated with an increased risk for CHDs. The risk of CHDs increases with the levels of a combination of metals, with mercury being the most important contributor to the mixture effect.

Indoor air pollution from coal combustion and tobacco smoke during the periconceptional period and risk for neural tube defects in offspring in five rural counties of Shanxi Province, China, 2010-2016

Huiting Chen, Yali Zhang, Le Zhang, Jufen Liu, Lei Jin, Aiguo Ren, Zhiwen Li

Summary: Indoor air pollution in Chinese rural areas has been found to increase the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs), with exposure to tobacco-sourced and coal-sourced pollution showing a significant association. A population-based case-control study revealed a 3.41 times higher risk of NTDs among women exposed to indoor air pollution compared to those not exposed. The risk increased with higher levels of pollution, indicating a dose-response relationship. The use of coal stoves for heating and passive smoking were identified as significant risk factors for NTD occurrence. The study highlights the importance of addressing indoor air pollution and its impact on reproductive health in rural China.

Summary: Breast milk leptin is associated with maternal metabolic profiles in pregnancy and dietary patterns during lactation. Maternal serum glucose, gamma-glutamyl transferase, and albumin in pregnancy were correlated with breast milk leptin. All dietary patterns were associated with breast milk leptin. Maternal diet balance during lactation was helpful to improve breast milk leptin concentration.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of unique metal phases, Cu-2(S,Te), Ag-2(S,Te), and Mg-2(Si,Sn), with a wide composition range. The formation of these metal phases defies the classic Hume-Rothery rule due to mismatched diffusion coefficients, atomic sizes, and electronegativities. The metal phases exhibit highly tunable sublattice order/disorder and possess interesting electronic and thermal properties, suggesting potential applications in materials research and technology.
