A field study was conducted to investigate the potential of residues from renewable energy production for fertilizing pastures. Six treatments including manure or biogas sludge, each combined with wood ash at 0, 1 and 3 t ha(-1) were applied at the same N equivalent (190 kg N ha(-1)). Three soil samplings and two cuttings were carried out within one growing season (4 months). Plots amended with biogas sludge had a higher EC and total N, those amended with wood ash at 3 t ha(-1) scored higher soil pH, EC and C/N ratio. K concentrations increased in plots amended with biogas sludge. Basal respiration, microbial biomass, metabolic quotient and C-mic/C-org from the differently treated soils were not influenced neither by the nature of the organic waste nor the amount of wood ash added. The time of sampling (seasonal effects) was found to influence the soil pH, EC and all the microbial parameters. A higher forage yield and lower proportion of leguminous plants was observed for soil treated with anaerobic sludge. It may be concluded that the combination of anaerobic sludge and wood ash has a double positive effect, both on some selected soil chemical parameters as well as on total forage yield. The results obtained need to be confirmed in long term experiments, and the best practice for a combined application still needs to be worked out. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Molecular monitoring of the poplar wood chip microbiome as a function of storage strategy

Julia Zoehrer, Maraike Probst, Sabrina Dumfort, Hannes Lenz, Ralf Pecenka, Heribert Insam, Judith Ascher-Jenull

Summary: One of the most challenging aspects of using wood chips as a renewable energy source is the loss of biomass during storage. The study found that shifts in microbial community composition occurred mainly at the beginning of the storage experiment, with little changes later on. Although the addition of alkaline stabilization agent Ca(OH)(2) altered the physicochemical properties of wood chips, it did not prevent loss of biomass.

The masking effect of extracellular DNA and robustness of intracellular DNA in anaerobic digester NGS studies: A discriminatory study of the total DNA pool

Magdalena Nagler, Sabine Marie Podmirseg, Markus Mayr, Judith Ascher-Jenull, Heribert Insam

Summary: Microbiome studies using next generation sequencing are commonly performed on the total DNA pool, which includes extracellular- and intracellular DNA fractions. Results show that total DNA has lower species richness and unique reads compared to intracellular DNA when tracking microbial community changes over time. The extracellular DNA fraction may qualitatively bias microbiome studies due to abundant sequences masking overall results, while intracellular DNA provides more reliable genetic information about potentially alive microbes.

Impact of Processed Food (Canteen and Oil Wastes) on the Development of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Larvae and Their Gut Microbiome Functions

Thomas Klammsteiner, Andreas Walter, Tajda Bogataj, Carina D. Heussler, Blaz Stres, Florian M. Steiner, Birgit C. Schlick-Steiner, Heribert Insam

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using black soldier fly larvae to process canteen food waste, showing that the larvae have a significantly higher consumption rate and waste reduction index compared to control chicken feed. However, the oil separator waste fraction inhibits larval biomass gain and can lead to high mortality rates.

Microbial response on the first full-scale DEMON® biomass transfer for mainstream deammonification

Sabine Marie Podmirseg, Maria Gomez-Brandon, Markus Muik, Blaz Stres, Martin Hell, Thomas Puempel, Sudhir Murthy, Kartik Chandran, Hongkeun Park, Heribert Insam, Bernhard Wett

Summary: Sidestream partial nitritation and deammonification (pN/A) is a well-established technology for treating high-strength ammonia wastewater. However, its application in the mainstream treatment is hindered by poor retention of anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB), insufficient repression of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB), and difficult control of soluble chemical oxygen demand and nitrite levels. This study monitored a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant and found that regular transfer of sidestream biomass and enrichment of granular anammox biomass were crucial for AnAOB establishment in the mainstream.

Gasification kinetics of chars from diverse residues under suitable conditions for the Sorption Enhanced Gasification process

G. Grasa, I. Martinez, R. Murillo

Summary: Gasification kinetics of six chars from residual origin were studied under relatively low temperature, low CO2, and high H2O partial pressures. The Random Pore Model (RPM) showed the best fit to experimental results, but the selection of the reaction model depended on the ash composition, specifically the presence of alkali and alkaline earth metals. Chars with ash content higher than 30% wt. were modeled with the RPM model, while chars with the highest K/Si ratio required modified versions of the RPM to accurately predict reaction rates. Textural properties played a key role in determining reaction parameters, such as the pre-exponential factor and activation energy, for chars with similar ash content and composition.
