Both attractiveness judgements and mate preferences vary considerably cross-culturally. We investigated whether men's preference for femininity in women's faces varies between 28 countries with diverse health conditions by analysing responses of 1972 heterosexual participants. Although men in all countries preferred feminized over masculinized female faces, we found substantial differences between countries in the magnitude of men's preferences. Using an average femininity preference for each country, we found men's facial femininity preferences correlated positively with the health of the nation, which explained 50.4% of the variation among countries. The weakest preferences for femininity were found in Nepal and strongest in Japan. As high femininity in women is associated with lower success in competition for resources and lower dominance, it is possible that in harsher environments, men prefer cues to resource holding potential over high fecundity.

Are gains in emotional symptoms and emotion-regulation competencies after the REThink therapeutic game maintained in the long run? A 6-month follow-up

Oana A. David, Liviu A. Fodor

Summary: Emotional disorders are prevalent mental health conditions affecting children and adolescents. A study comparing the effects of the REThink therapeutic game and a face-to-face prevention program found that the REThink intervention had a lasting impact on children's mental health and emotional regulation. Furthermore, parental psychological control, parent attachment, and childhood trauma moderated the maintenance of improvements.

Relevant Psychological Factors in Weight Management. How to Think and Behave to Lose Weight and Maintain it for Good

Loana T. Comsa, Oana A. David, Daniel O. David

Summary: This study aimed to identify psychological factors associated with maintaining or regaining weight loss and determine the psychological characteristics of individuals with different BMI levels. The results showed that there are differences in self-efficacy, irrationality, and eating behaviors between the regainers and maintainers versus those with a healthy stable weight. Furthermore, individuals with a healthy weight had higher self-efficacy about their eating behaviors, more cognitive restraint, lower levels of specific irrational beliefs, and less emotional eating compared to participants with obesity or overweight.

Poleward increase in feeding efficiency of leafminer Stigmella lapponica (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) in a latitudinal gradient crossing a boreal forest zone

Mikhail V. Kozlov, Vitali Zverev, Tobias M. Sandner, Erik J. van Nieukerken, Elena L. Zvereva

Summary: Damage to plant communities caused by insect herbivores generally decreases with increasing latitude. This study examined the hypothesis that the food consumption by individual herbivores decreases from low to high latitudes due to a decrease in metabolic expenses driven by temperature. The results revealed that the larval feeding efficiency increased with latitude, resulting in reduced foliar biomass consumption by the herbivores at higher latitudes to reach the same size.

Summary: There is evidence to show that social class stereotypes are more prominent when there is a perception of greater economic inequality. The present study investigates the role of wealth-based categorization in this relationship and finds that perceiving higher economic inequality leads to considering wealth as a meaningful basis for categorization. Surprisingly, higher levels of perceived inequality are associated with negative stereotypes of the wealthy and positive stereotypes of the poor. Further analysis reveals that this tendency is more likely to emerge in societies with lower social mobility and democracy and higher corruption, highlighting the influence of socio-structural features on perceptions of the wealthy and the poor.

The females' response to male attractiveness: Mate choice, larvae production and differential brain protein expression

Miguel Hernandez-Villanueva, Sagrario Cordero-Molina, Constantino Macias Garcia, Jorge Contreras-Garduno

Summary: This study examined female choice and larvae production in response to attractive or less attractive males, and investigated the protein profile in female brains. Females preferred males with high levels of pheromones, which required the secretion of juvenile hormone (JH). Male attractiveness was enhanced using a JH analog, resulting in less female rejection, higher mating frequency, and increased offspring production. Out of the 1833 proteins detected in the brain, only 32 were differentially expressed in females mating with attractive versus less attractive males, and these proteins were involved in memory, metabolism, olfactory detection, reproduction, and movement.

Summary: In response to COVID-19, the Psychological Science Accelerator conducted three large-scale psychological studies on loss-gain framing, cognitive reappraisals, and autonomy framing manipulations. The data collected from 73,223 participants included specific measures, a general questionnaire on health prevention behaviors and COVID-19 experience, and demographic information. Participants were from 111 geopolitical regions and completed the survey in 44 unique languages/dialects. The anonymized dataset provides opportunities for secondary analysis on coping, framing, and self-determination in a global sample obtained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Preventing mental illness in children that experienced maltreatment the efficacy of REThink online therapeutic game

Oana A. David, Liviu A. Fodor

Summary: This study examined the efficacy of the REThink online therapeutic game in preventing mental illness in maltreated children compared to standard care. The results showed that children who received the REThink intervention had lower levels of emotional problems, mental health difficulties, maladaptive emotion-regulation strategies, and irrational cognitions. Additionally, children with higher severity of child maltreatment benefited more from the REThink game, while children with lower parent attachment security benefited less.

Mouth proximity influences perceived disgust of visual stimuli

Pavol Prokop, Jana Fancovicova, Dominika Sramelova, Gaetan Thiebaut, Alain Meot, Patrick Bonin

Summary: The emotion of disgust is likely a protective mechanism against oral contamination by pathogens. This study found that objects positioned closer to the mouth were perceived as more disgusting, especially non-food objects. Interestingly, stimuli shown near the foot, far from the mouth, also elicited high disgust ratings, possibly due to contextual integration of emotional conflict. These findings suggest that disgust is enhanced in the presence of increased risk of oral contamination, indicating its context-dependent nature.

Who Cares about Time? Investigating Personality and Self-regulation in the Relationship Between Religiosity and Punctuality in Nigerian Public Service Organizations

Summary: The study examined the relationship between religiosity and punctuality, and found that self-regulation mediates this relationship. Personality traits were also found to moderate the relationship between religiosity and self-regulation and between religiosity and punctuality. The findings suggest that self-regulation is key to punctuality, and individuals' personality disposition influences their punctuality to appointments.

Exploring the males' terminal investment strategy: Impact of the dose of stress and the time lapse between stress and mating

Summary: The study investigates the terminal investment strategy in Tenebrio molitor and its relationship with oxidative stress and the time lapse between courtship and mating. The results show that the dose of oxidative stress and the time interval between courtship and mating have an impact on the support for either the terminal investment or honest signalling. The findings suggest that organisms allocate resources to maximize current reproduction when their future reproductive opportunities are uncertain.

Summary: Relict species are the remnants of formerly more diverse lineages, and understanding their evolutionary history and conservation status is important. This study sequenced the genome of an endangered species, Baronia brevicornis, and found a high level of heterozygosity but a sharp population decline in the past million years. The study also investigated genome size variation in Papilionidae and the role of transposable element activity in their evolution.

Charismatic species should be large: The role of admiration and fear

Pavol Prokop, Martina Zvarikova, Milan Zvarik, Zuzana Jezova, Peter Fedor

Summary: Humans have a strong preference for large, charismatic animals, but the reasons for this preference are still unclear. A study in Slovakia found that large animals trigger both fear and admiration in humans, and these emotions have contrasting effects on willingness to pay for animal conservation. The fear and admiration of animals are influenced by the same emotions triggered by non-animal objects. Beliefs in the magical power of animals indirectly influence willingness to pay for animal conservation through admiration of large, non-animal objects. Females show greater willingness to pay for animal conservation than males, regardless of species size.
