Skull morphology results from the bone remodelling mechanism that underlies the specific bone growth dynamics. Histological study of the bone surface from Neanderthal mandible specimens of El Sidron (Spain) provides information about the distribution of the remodelling fields (bone remodelling patterns or BRP) indicative of the bone growth directions. In comparison with other primate species, BRP shows that Neanderthal mandibles from the El Sidron (Spain) sample present a specific BRP. The interpretation of this map allows inferences concerning the growth directions that explain specific morphological traits of the Neanderthal mandible, such as its quadrangular shape and the posterior location of the mental foramen.

Evidence of habitual behavior from non-alimentary dental wear on deciduous teeth from the Middle and Upper Paleolithic Cantabrian region, Northern Spain

Almudena Estalrrich, Ana B. Marin-Arroyo

Summary: This study presents an analysis of non-masticatory dental wear modifications in deciduous dentition of Neanderthal and anatomically modern human subadult individuals, suggesting potential involvement in group activities and contribution to group welfare. These dental wear patterns support the importance of mouth involvement in paramasticatory activities throughout the Pleistocene.

Three-Dimensional Comparative Study of Human Bipartite Scaphoids and the Os Centrale of the Wrist in Neandertals and Non-Human Anthropoid Primates

Sebastien Durand, Justine Dufour, Antonio Rosas, Fabio Becce, Caley Orr

Summary: This study analyzed the geometric similarities among bipartite scaphoids from primate species with fused and unfused scaphoid centrales. The main feature of a bipartite scaphoid is the continuity along the anteroposterior axis, with the os centrale being smaller and elongated in the anteroposterior direction in all specimens. The position of the os centrale centroid compared to the scaphoid had a strong orientation along the proximodistal axis in all species.

The scarcity of fossils in the African rainforest. Archaeo-paleontological surveys and actualistic taphonomy in Equatorial Guinea

Antonio Rosas, Antonio Garcia-Tabernero, Dario Fidalgo, Maximiliano Fero Mene, Cayetano Ebana Ebana, Fidel Esono Mba, Juan Ignacio Morales, Palmira Saladie

Summary: The African rainforest is lacking in ape fossils from the last 10 million years, but archaeological-palaeontological surveys in Equatorial Guinea have found short sedimentary sequences near river estuaries with lithic industry and charcoal remains, yet no macro vertebrate fossils. The palaeontological desert cannot be attributed to scarcity of sampling, and factors such as low sedimentation/erosion rates, scavenger action by ants and termites, and fossildiagenetic processes may contribute to the lack of fossil record in the rainforest.
