Summary: Research found that females with ASD exhibited more synchronous behaviors in interactions, with longer, more complex, and engaging interplays that were more frequently adequately concluded. The social affect, personal-social, and language quotients in females were positively correlated with the complexity, duration, and adequacy of exchanges, while males did not show this correlation. Successful interactions seemed to rely more on social abilities in females, while males appeared to rely more on performance skills.

Summary: Little is known about the effects of animal- and diet-related factors on the plasma zinc concentrations of horses and ponies. The study evaluated the impact of age, sex, horse type, and internal diseases on the plasma zinc concentrations in 538 equine patients. A feeding study with healthy horses and ponies assessed the effects of dietary zinc supplements on the plasma and mane hair zinc concentrations. In conclusion, plasma zinc concentrations were not significantly influenced by nutritional and non-nutritional factors, while mane hair samples better reflected the dietary zinc supply.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that smoking, exercise, and social interaction play a mediating role in the relationship between physical and mental health. This study explores the effects of different mediators on the relationship between past and future physical and mental health across different age and gender groups. The results indicate that in-person social interaction is the most significant mediator in the relationship between mental health and future physical health.

Summary: Hair regulation is an important policy in correctional institutions for maintaining hygiene, security, and discipline. This study examined the perceived influence of hairstyles on the behavioral responses of Chinese prisoners. The findings showed that male prisoners are more prone to violent tendencies, and hairstyle is associated with violent behavior in a gender-related way. Restrictive hair regulations without considering social and cultural meanings and gender differences can negatively impact male prisoners' self-esteem and increase negative emotional responses in all prisoners, while reducing their perception of procedural fairness.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the age and number of years since residency graduation at which male and female emergency physicians exhibit attrition from the workforce. The results showed that female physicians exhibited attrition approximately 12 years younger than male physicians. These findings highlight the widespread disparities regarding attrition in the emergency medicine workforce, which need to be addressed to ensure stability, longevity, and diversity.

Summary: Hair graying is an early and obvious physical trait associated with aging in humans. Recent advances in molecular biology and genetics have provided insights into the genes involved in melanin synthesis, transport, and distribution in hair follicles. This review summarizes these advancements, including enrichment theory, Genome-Wide association studies, whole exome sequencing, gene expression studies, and animal models, aiming to understand the genetic changes associated with hair graying and lay the groundwork for future research. Furthermore, understanding the genetics of hair graying is valuable in exploring potential mechanisms, treatments, or preventative measures.

Summary: This study examined differences in internalizing and externalizing behaviors between boys and girls diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Girls showed higher instances of bullying, less anger control, and poorer emotional self-control compared to boys. There were no differences between the groups in terms of social communication. Further research is needed to investigate the lesser known area of externalizing behaviors in girls with ASD.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate and analyze the awareness of gender equality, self-esteem, and subjective well-being in school-age boys and girls, as well as the factors influencing them. The results showed that there were different influential factors for boys and girls in terms of gender equality awareness, self-esteem, and subjective well-being. Children with androgynous traits were more likely to develop gender equality awareness and self-esteem.

Summary: The study evaluated adults' motivations for well-being at different ages, looking at females and males separately. Four main motivations were studied: eudaimonic, hedonic pleasure, hedonic comfort, and extrinsic motivation. The findings showed that eudaimonic motivation increased for females until the 30s and did not change significantly after, while it decreased for males from the 30s to the 40s before increasing again. Hedonic pleasure decreased for both genders from the 30s onwards, with males scoring higher in the 20s.

Summary: In pregnancy, higher blood pressure levels and visit-to-visit variability are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, with each 5 mm Hg increase in blood pressure levels leading to increased odds of the composite outcome. Increased blood pressure visit-to-visit variability is also associated with increased odds of hypertension and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Summary: This study compared the use of intramuscular ketamine with a combination of midazolam and haloperidol for sedating emergency department patients with severe agitation. The results showed that ketamine led to significantly shorter time to adequate sedation compared to the midazolam and haloperidol combination, although the ketamine group had a slightly higher rate of serious adverse events.

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcomes of open ankle arthrodesis (OAA) and arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis (AAA). The results showed that after adjusting for baseline patient characteristics, there were no significant differences in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) between the two techniques. However, arthroscopic surgery had a lower infection rate compared to open surgery.

Summary: Performing a sample size calculation for a randomized controlled trial requires specifying an assumed benefit and a target power. The belief that minimum important difference should be used in setting assumed benefit and sample size is misguided. The true power of the trial depends on the true benefit, so the assumed benefit should be a realistic estimate. Calculating sample size should focus on determining reasonable estimates of the true benefit, not on judging the magnitude of benefit as important.

Summary: This study investigated the link between latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in a low-tuberculosis-incidence setting in British Columbia. The findings showed that LTBI positivity was associated with a higher CVD risk compared to LTBI negativity, with an 8% increased risk in complete case data and a statistically significant 11% increased risk when using multiple imputation for missing confounder values. In addition, incomplete LTBI therapy was associated with a higher CVD risk, while completed therapy showed a similar risk level. These findings highlight the importance of addressing LTBI in reducing CVD risk, especially in low-incidence areas.
