Changes in antioxidative enzymes activities during Tacitus bellus direct shoot organogenesis from leaf explants were examined. During the early stages of shoot organogenesis there was a decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and an increase in catalase (CAT) activity, and later during organogenesis there was an increase in peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity. Two highly regulated turning points may be distinguished regarding activities and isoforms of antioxidative enzymes: the initiation of shoot organogenesis and the shoot bud formation. Our data suggest the role of specific CAT, POD, SOD and PPO isoforms in separate processes during T. bellus direct shoot organogenesis.

Summary: In this study, in vitro culture of tansy was established without the need for plant growth regulators, with a focus on the secretion-rich glandular trichomes and the potent 3,5-O-DCQA compound. Biotechnological interventions on secondary metabolite production from trichomes could enhance the production of important tansy metabolites for potential pharmaceutical applications. Further investigation will be directed towards exploring the pharmaceutical potential of tansy in vitro obtained metabolites.

Leaf glandular trichomes of micropropagated Inula britannica - Effect of sucrose on trichome density, distribution and chemical profile

Summary: Glandular trichomes are secretory organs with diverse characteristics, such as shape, size, location, and composition of secondary metabolites. Sucrose has an impact on the development, density, and chemical composition of leaf glandular trichomes of in vitro cultured Inula britannica, affecting growth and biomass accumulation. A lack of sugar does not affect growth, but a high sugar concentration inhibits biomass production in vitro. Differences in the chemical profiles of glandular trichomes grown in different sugar concentrations mainly come from phenolic compounds.

Summary: The study revealed that both UV-B and UV-C radiation can induce multiple modifications in the structure of plant cell walls, including changes in relative content and chemical composition. These alterations in the cell walls help plants maintain physiological functions and are correlated with specific phenolic compounds.

Summary: This study presents an approach for studying the physiology of single live cells using a novel upright microscope/patch-clamp configuration. It demonstrates that a microscope with a movable z-axis stage and a fixed objective can effectively combine with the patch-clamp technique, providing stable recordings and high success rate in whole-cell patch-clamp trials.

Summary: This study examined the micromorphology, phytochemistry, and bioactivity of the endemic species Nepeta cyrenaica for the first time. The plant was found to have different types of glandular trichomes on its leaves, with lipophilic secretion being predominant. The main component of the essential oil was 1,8-cineole. Various phenolics and iridoids were tentatively identified in the leaf extracts. The study demonstrated the potential medicinal value of the bioactive compounds in Nepeta cyrenaica.
