Heterotrophic CaCO3-precipitating bacteria were isolated from biofilms on deteriorated ignimbrites, siliceous acidic rocks, from Morelia Cathedral (Mexico) and identified as Enterobacter cancerogenus (22e), Bacillus sp. (32a) and Bacillus subtilis (52g). In solid medium, 22e and 32a precipitated calcite and vaterite while 52g produced calcite. Urease activity was detected in these isolates and CaCO3 precipitation increased in the presence of urea in the liquid medium. In the presence of calcium, EPS production decreased in 22e and 32a and increased in 52g. Under laboratory conditions, ignimbrite colonization by these isolates only occurred in the presence of calcium and no CaCO3 was precipitated. Calcium may therefore be important for biofilm formation on stones. The importance of the type of stone, here a siliceous stone, on biological colonization is emphasized. This calcium effect has not been reported on calcareous materials. The importance of the effect of calcium on EPS production and biofilm formation is discussed in relation to other applications of CaCO3 precipitation by bacteria.

Estimation of the main conditions in (SARS-CoV-2) Covid-19 patients that increase the risk of death using Machine learning, the case of Mexico

Jose A. Guzman-Torrres, Elia M. Alonso-Guzman, Francisco J. Dominguez-Mota, Gerardo Tinoco-Guerrero

Summary: This paper uses machine learning techniques to help understand specific patterns in Covid patients arising from the transmission-dynamic models of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The main causes of death in Mexico are found to be related to age, poor eating habits, chronic diseases, and contact with infected individuals lacking proper care. The analysis shows a remarkable accuracy of 87%, which is considered satisfactory.

Reinforced Concrete Structure Performance in Marine Structures: Analyzing Durability Indexes to Obtain More Accurate Corrosion Initiation Time Predictions

Mauricio Arreola-Sanchez, Elia M. Alonso-Guzman, Wilfrido Martinez-Molina, Andres A. Torres-Acosta, Hugo L. Chavez-Garcia, Jose M. Ponce-Ortega

Summary: This study compared six index properties collected during durability inspections of five Mexican seaports, finding that electrical resistivity is a key durability index for concrete structures in marine environments. Additionally, the study verified the feasibility of using correlations of variables to clean unnecessary data for calculating corrosion initiation time.

Ag nanoparticle dispersed TiO2 thin films by single step sol gel process: Evaluation of the physical properties and photocatalytic degradation

J. A. Borrego Perez, E. R. Morales, F. Paraguay Delgado, C. A. Meza Avendano, E. M. Alonso Guzman, N. R. Mathews

Summary: The study focuses on the deposition and analysis of TiO2 and Ag-dispersed TiO2 thin films for efficient water treatment applications. The physical and structural properties of the films were analyzed using various techniques. The presence of Ag nanoparticles on the film surface and throughout the thickness of the Ag: TiO2 thin films was confirmed. The Ag: TiO2 thin films showed a significant improvement in photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of methylene blue.

Measurement of CO2 Emissions by the Operation of Freight Transport in Mexican Road Corridors

Juan F. Mendoza-Sanchez, Elia M. Alonso-Guzman, Wilfrido Martinez-Molina, Hugo L. Chavez-Garcia, Rafael Soto-Espitia, Saul A. Obregon-Biosca, Horacio Delgado-Alamilla

Summary: This paper proposes a methodology for estimating emissions for freight vehicles in Mexico's road transportation corridors. The analysis considers variables such as vehicle fleet conditions, road geometry and quality, environment, and heavy vehicle traffic. The results provide indicators for CO2 emissions per kilometer and emissions per tonne transported. These indicators can be used to establish a baseline for CO2 emissions, implement actions to reduce greenhouse gases, and develop parameter values for cost benefit analysis. They can also be applied to predict emission growth in road transport corridors using geospatial modeling.
