Macrophage migration inhibitory factor represents a key cytokine in human diseases. It plays an important role in both innate and acquired immunity and has been shown to be a key mediator of inflammatory diseases. More recently MIF has been, implicated in cancer pathogenesis. Over the decades its structure and functions have been elucidated and this has led to it being further classified as a hormone and an enzyme. It has isomerase enzymatic activity and increasing evidence implicates this activity in inflammatory disease. Consequently, there is increasing interest in developing small molecular weight inhibitors which could target this novel enzymatic activity in disease. Role of extracellular vesicles in chronic lung disease

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play crucial roles in chronic lung diseases as mediators of intercellular communication and potential biomarkers and drug carriers. Research indicates that EVs are key players in inflammatory processes, offering new avenues for therapies and pathological investigations in a range of lung diseases.

Summary: The study on the association between TLR3 L412F polymorphism and acute exacerbation-related death in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) reveals that this polymorphism attenuates the immune responses of IPF lung cells to bacteria and dysregulates the lung microbiome in IPF patients.

Blockade of MIF biological activity ameliorates house dust mite- induced allergic airway inflammation in humanized MIF mice

Summary: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) expression is affected by a functional promoter polymorphism, with the number of CATT repeats correlating to MIF expression level. In a pre-clinical model of allergic asthma, mice with increasing CATT repeats (CATT(5) and CATT(7)) showed varying degrees of airway inflammation. The potent MIF inhibitor SCD-19 was able to mitigate the pathophysiology observed in CATT(7) mice, indicating the important role of endogenous human MIF expression in airway inflammation severity.

Switch-on luminescent sensing of unlabelled bacterial lectin by terbium(iii) glycoconjugate systems

Summary: Interactions between lectins and glycoconjugate-terbium(iii) self-assembly complexes are utilized for sensing by enhancing lanthanide luminescence. This glycan-directed sensing method can detect an unlabelled lectin (LecA) associated with pathogen P. aeruginosa in solution, without bactericidal activity. Further development of these probes holds potential as a diagnostic tool.

Summary: This study evaluated the anticancer activity of three copper-based anticancer complexes on breast cancer cells under different oxygen conditions. It was found that one of the complexes exhibited increased cytotoxicity under low oxygen conditions. Additionally, these complexes had the ability to generate reactive oxygen species and act as superoxide dismutase mimics. Solution speciation studies showed that one complex was the dominant species.
