In the conventional fermentation process to obtain butanol (a novel biofuel), product-induced toxicity results in a product stream with low concentration of butanol (similar to 13 g/L) and limits the concentration of the sugar solution to less than 60 g/L. As a result, steam-consuming operations such as mash sterilization, downstream product recovery (distillation), and wastewater treatment are energy-intensive and important economic drawbacks. Based on the correlation between energy consumption of the distillation unit and butanol concentration in the fermentation beer, the present research points out that improvements in biobutanol processing intended to increase the concentration of butanol in the beer should have a minimum target of 36 g/L. Moreover, due to the dramatic effect of butanol concentration on the wastewater footprint, the volume of the effluent stream can be reduced by 60% (from 72 to 29 L stillage/L butanol) if the minimum concentration target is reached instead of the usual butanol titer of 13 g/L. These correlations were used as the basis to discuss the impacts of today's research works (genetic strain improvement, utilization of lignocellulosic biomass feedstock, and development of new process technologies) on the energy consumption for complete dehydration of butanol and on wastewater generation.

Three-stage repeated-batch immobilized cell fermentation to produce butanol from non-detoxified sugarcane bagasse hemicellulose hydrolysates

Suranny Jimenez Chacon, Gabriela Matias, Thaddeus Chukwuemeka Ezeji, Rubens Maciel Filho, Adriano Pinto Mariano

Summary: This study developed a three-staged repeated-batch immobilized cell fermentation to produce butanol from undiluted, non-detoxified sugarcane bagasse hemicellulose hydrolysates. Results showed that using bagasse as a carrier was more effective than using a 3D-printed carrier, leading to higher xylose utilization and more butanol derived from SBHH.

Co-fermentation of sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate and molasses by Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum: Effect on sugar consumption and butanol production

Ana Maria Zetty-Arenas, Laura Plazas Tovar, Rafael Ferraz Alves, Adriano Pinto Mariano, Walter van Gulik, Rubens Maciel Filho, Sindelia Freitas

Summary: The co-fermentation of mixed sugars for butanol production is a promising approach, and C. saccharoperbutylacetonicum DSM 14923 shows potential and effective application in this process. The study found that the best-performing fermentation medium had a CHH25/SCM75 ratio, with 97% sugar consumption and no inhibitory effect of undissociated acetic acid at pH 5.5-6.5.

Summary: This paper introduces the energy-stage-temperature (E-S-T) method and its associated diagram for linking energy consumption and stage identification, with application results presented for different scenarios. The method provides more accurate results than the widely used Gilliland correlation, helping to improve energy efficiency.

Isopropanol-butanol-ethanol production by cell-immobilized vacuum fermentation

Carla Ferreira dos Santos Vieira, Augusto Duzi Sia, Francisco Maugeri Filho, Rubens Maciel Filho, Adriano Pinto Mariano

Summary: The productivity of Isopropanol-Butanol-Ethanol can be increased by immobilizing cells on low-cost, renewable fibrous materials, with in-situ vacuum product recovery technique applied for repeated-batch cultivation. The fermentation process showed improved IBE productivity compared to free- and immobilized-cell cultures, with the product stream containing 45 g/L IBE. However, unsatisfactory results were obtained in two cycles, leading to the introduction of a concept of an internal-loop boiling-driven fibrous-bed bioreactor.

Summary: Techno-economic analysis was conducted on the production of bio-oil from Eucalyptus grandis residues in Sao Paulo, Brazil, showing potential for economically viable centralized biorefineries. The study found that plant capacity has the most significant impact on the minimum selling price (MSP) of bio-oil, with the production able to achieve high net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) indicators.

Chemical Engineering Teaching in COVID-19 Times: Successfully Adapting a Capstone Design Course to a Remote Format

Nadia G. Khouri, Michelli Fontana, Igor L. R. Dias, Maria R. W. Maciel, Rubens Maciel Filho, Adriano P. Mariano

Summary: This study presents the experience of a Chemical Engineering Capstone Design Course at the University of Campinas in Brazil during the first semester of 2020, when educational institutions had to adapt to remote teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the necessary adaptations, students performed well and were mostly satisfied with the course, recommending the continuation of remote teaching or a combination of remote and face-to-face teaching. These changes allowed for the implementation of new teaching dynamics and tools that could potentially enhance the quality of the course in the future.

Graphical Representation of Chemical Reactions and Heat Cascade Analysis of Biomass Residue Syngasification to Produce Hydrogen

Jean-Christophe Bonhivers, Christopher Reddick, Carlos E. V. Rossell, Adriano Pinto Mariano, Rubens Maciel Filho

Summary: The production of hydrogen from biomass by syngasification in Brazil presents an opportunity for increasing the profitability of the sugarcane ethanol industry. Hydrogen can be produced from sugarcane ethanol to make high-value chemicals and can also serve as a transportation fuel. This article discusses the thermodynamics of syngasification, proposes a C-H-O chart to analyze chemical reactions, and analyzes the heat cascade in the process of producing hydrogen. The results show that the chemical reactions release enough heat to meet the thermal demands of downstream operations.
