Summary: With the increasing industrialization, there is a growing emphasis on energy-saving and environment-friendly separation technologies. In this study, a pressure-swing distillation (PSD) process is established to effectively separate methylcyclohexane (MCH) and tert-butanol (TBA) azeotropes. Two improved separation processes, heat pump pressure swing distillation (HP-PSD) and heat integrated pressure swing distillation (HIPSD), are designed to reduce energy consumption. The results show that both processes significantly decrease energy consumption and improve the economy, with HP-PSD process being the most economical and environment-friendly.

Summary: This study evaluates the eco-environmental impacts of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by integrating carbon footprint (CFP), energy footprint (EFP), toxicity, and economic assessments. The findings reveal low total CFP, but significant variation in site-specific EFP. The use of crude oil and natural gas for electricity generation increases EFP, CFP, and carcinogenic human toxicity. The study recommends improving modeling reliability by modifying regional CO2 emission factors and focusing on emerging technologies for energy and biogas recovery.

Summary: In this study, hybrid reactive distillation combined with pressure-swing distillation (PSD) and extractive distillation (ED) processes were proposed to achieve high-purity recovery of ethanol (EtOH) and tert-butanol (TBA) from industrial waste with low carbon emission. The results showed that the reactive-extractive-/pressure-swing hybrid distillation had significant economic and environmental advantages. The REPDC-REPC process saved 56.47% total annual cost (TAC), reduced 69.23% CO2 emissions, and had 67.51% thermodynamic efficiency, minor exergy destruction, and the highest total exergy efficiency.

Summary: Freeze desalination (FD) is a promising desalination method that requires less energy and reduces corrosion risk compared to other methods. This review paper discusses the advances in FD methods, including stand-alone and hybrid approaches, and explores future research focus. Results show that ice seeding in FD can produce potable water, while post-treatment is required without ice seeding. Stand-alone progressive FD has higher plant capacity than suspension FD, and integrating FD with membrane distillation significantly improves plant capacity.

Summary: The productivity of Isopropanol-Butanol-Ethanol can be increased by immobilizing cells on low-cost, renewable fibrous materials, with in-situ vacuum product recovery technique applied for repeated-batch cultivation. The fermentation process showed improved IBE productivity compared to free- and immobilized-cell cultures, with the product stream containing 45 g/L IBE. However, unsatisfactory results were obtained in two cycles, leading to the introduction of a concept of an internal-loop boiling-driven fibrous-bed bioreactor.
