Summary: The objective of this study was to analyze changes in land use and land cover in the municipality of Floresta, Pernambuco State, Brazil, using multitemporal Landsat images. The land use maps were generated using the Bhattacharya classifier, and the accuracy of the data was validated using the Kappa index and field data. The results showed significant changes in the forest and exposed soil classes, with an increase in the forest class and a decrease in exposed soil. These changes are attributed to the interaction between climate, human activities, and the quality of the satellite images used.

Summary: The spatio-temporal assessment of water and carbon fluxes in Brazil's Northeast region provides insights into the surface flux patterns in different vegetation types. The study shows that land degradation and climate impacts have led to reduced photosynthetic activity and increased vulnerability to desertification in the Caatinga biome, particularly in sparse areas. Dense Caatinga exhibits higher photosynthetic activity and greater resilience to climate effects. Compared to other biomes in the region, Caatinga has lower rates of evapotranspiration and gross primary production.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of spectral and texture variables extracted from an MSI/Sentinel-2 image in estimating and mapping aboveground biomass (AGB) in a dry forest in northeastern Brazil. The study found that texture variables extracted from a 7x7-pixel window were the best predictors, and the parametric model of multiple linear regression (MLR) was the most accurate estimation method. This study contributes to filling the gap in using optical data for AGB estimation in the region and provides valuable information for the management of natural resources.

Summary: Hunting with dogs is an important activity for the survival of the human population in the Brazilian semiarid region. However, it can have implications for game species conservation. This study analyzed the patterns of hunting with dogs activities by characterizing hunters' and hunting dogs' profiles, investigating target and nontarget prey species, hunters' practices, motivations, and perceptions. The findings showed that hunters using dog assistance were mainly men, engaged in agriculture with low income and education. The motivations for hunting with dogs included food, sport, and trade. There were twenty species captured by dogs, but only six were target prey when hunting with dogs. Hunters perceived hunting with dogs to be three times more efficient.

Summary: Considering the increasing global land degradation and desertification, understanding the modulation of soil microbial communities by these drivers is crucial in mitigating these processes. This study assessed the effects of land degradation, restoration, and native forest on soil microbial communities in a semi-arid region in Northeastern Brazil. The results showed that land degradation led to changes in microbial community composition and decreased microbial diversity. However, the restored area exhibited more resilience, suggesting that microbial communities can recover their functions through sustainable practices. Furthermore, degraded lands resulted in a loss of functions related to carbon dynamics in the system. This study provides important evidence that land restoration practices can recover soil functions and is relevant for further research on sustainable practices in global degradation hotspots.

Summary: This study evaluated medicinal plants sold in public markets in different municipalities in Paraiba state, northeast Brazil, and found that the supply of these plants does not seem to be related to the time of year or the region. There were differences in the inventory of plants commercialized in markets in recent years, and an intermediate zone of knowledge and use of commercialized species was identified between the studied localities.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between four dominant flood-dependent vegetation communities and inundation metrics on the upper Darling River floodplain using high-resolution maps and modeling. The results showed that the different vegetation communities responded differently to inundation attributes, and the floodplain forests and woodlands in the upper Darling exhibited strong adaptability to drought and inundation. These findings offer practical information for ecosystem management in predicting changes in vegetation distribution in response to flow regime alterations resulting from water planning or climate change.

The research also highlighted the significant role of atmospheric pCO(2) and temperature variations in the paleovegetation transition in the Cerrado region, while precipitation was identified as the major modulator of paleovegetation in the Caatinga region.

Summary: The study investigated the composition, abundance, and environmental drivers of cyanobacterial biocrust in two important biomes in Brazil, Caatinga and Pampa, revealing distinct taxonomic compositions and assemblages at each biome. Soil temperature and pH were identified as the main factors explaining the differences in biotic structures. The findings are expected to enhance biocrust conservation efforts and promote the use of biocrust cyanobacteria as indicators of global change.

Summary: The study found that soil microbial communities in legume plantations have higher richness and diversity, more keystone taxa and positive relationships, and larger connectivity and potential functions. Additionally, legume plantations have richer plant communities and higher soil nutrients compared to non-legume plantations. The results reveal the importance of legume plantations in vegetation restoration engineering and provide a new perspective for evaluating their ecological value and plantation stability.
