Summary: This study investigates the effects of different hydrodynamic conditions on biofilm composition and architecture. The results show that the thickness and compactness of biofilms vary under different flow conditions. The distribution of extracellular polysaccharides, proteins, and bacteria also differs. Additionally, the study observes the secretion of different types of EPS and their role in biofilm formation.

Summary: Water companies use chlorine to reduce microbial contamination in drinking water. This study shows that chlorine promotes the formation and development of biofilms, which are thicker, denser, and have higher coverage in the presence of chlorine. Interestingly, the thickness, density, and coverage of biofilms are positively correlated with shear stress, regardless of chlorine conditions. The findings suggest that chlorine can create more stable biofilms, which may serve as refuge for pathogens.

Summary: This study investigated the biological denitrification process in the presence of gC(3)N(4) doped TiO2 composite and elucidated the role of extracellular polymeric substances. The results showed that the gC(3)N(4) doped TiO2 composite significantly enhanced nitrate reduction and electron transfer. The integration of gC(3)N(4) doped TiO2 photocatalyst and biofilm is a promising technology for nitrate removal.

Summary: A hybrid approach of computational fluid dynamics and Taguchi analysis was proposed to evaluate the influence of various factors on shear stress in the microfluidic cerebrovascular channel. The Newtonian and six non-Newtonian fluids models were tested, and the shear stress was found to decrease with an increase in channel width and height, and a decrease in viscosity. Porosity was identified as the most influential factor, followed by flow rate, width, and height of the channel. A modified shear stress equation was proposed considering the effects of porosity, width, height, flow rate, and viscosity.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibit increased tolerance within mature biofilms, requiring a concentration nine times higher for elimination compared to planktonic cells. Mutant strains unable to form a pellicle biofilm are four times more susceptible to AgNPs than the wild-type strain. Electron microscopy analysis shows that AgNPs interact with extracellular matrix components and disrupt its microstructure. Major proteins such as Bap1 and RbmA mediate biofilm bacterial resistance to AgNPs.

Summary: This article investigates the role of explosive cell lysis, which is a consequence of prophage induction, in biofilm formation. The study shows that genotoxic stress can activate lytic prophages in the bacterium Burkholderia cenocepacia H111, leading to the release of DNA and membrane vesicles. The released DNA enables the strain to develop biofilm streamers, and genotoxic stress enhances streamer formation. This study demonstrates the involvement of prophages in streamer formation and highlights a potential issue with the use of antibiotics that trigger the bacterial SOS response.
