Summary: Using a single scattering theory, this study derives the expression of the degree of polarization for light scattered from a layer with both surface and volume scattering. The expression reveals the close connection between the degree of polarization and the statistical correlation between surface and volume disorders, and allows for quantitative analysis of different levels of correlations. The study shows that measuring the degree of polarization can assess the surface-volume correlation function, and vice versa, the degree of polarization can be controlled through appropriate design of the correlation function.

Summary: In this study, we obtained polarization images of different forms of electrospun fibers using polarized light microscopy and explored an automatic classification method based on Mueller matrix depolarization parameter. Our proposed method, utilizing transfer learning and convolutional neural networks, outperformed conventional approaches and showed high accuracy and practicality in the classification of electrospun fibers.

Summary: In this letter, a new design for elliptical retarders based on two quarter-wave retarders with an angle offset is presented, which is suitable for polarimetric measurements based on rotating compensator systems. This design offers the minimum condition number achieved by traditionally optimal polarimeter setups, and can further improve the accuracy of polarimetric imaging measurements in the presence of error sources, with the advantage that it only requires common quarter-wave retarders.

Summary: Polarimetric imaging is an effective way for enhancing image quality in underwater environments. The proposed method based on the Mueller imager synergistically modulates the polarization states of illumination light and a polarization filter in an optical way to filter out backscattered light and improve image quality without digital processing. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness and superiority of this method in scattering media.

Summary: This study demonstrates a new electro-optic technology utilizing chiral nematic liquid crystal dispersed with zwitterionic dopants to combat laser speckle. The results show that the speckle noise can be reduced by over 90%, reaching a level that is imperceptible to the human eye.

Summary: This report investigates the effects of hydration and desiccation of ex vivo porcine skin on the reflectance of polarized light at different wavelengths. The results demonstrate that hydration leads to a modest increase in total reflectance, whereas desiccation has little effect. In addition, hydration does not affect polarized reflectance, but desiccation slightly lowers polarized reflectance.

Summary: In this work, a compression method is proposed for the KAIST Mueller measurement database by assuming a triply degeneracy in the Cloude coherency eigenspectrum. The method reparameterizes the database into eight parameters, maintains physicality when interpolated, and retains the dominant polarimetric properties. Polarimetric importance sampling is enabled by interpreting the eigenspectrum as probabilities.

Summary: In this study, a simple and powerful method was used to fabricate chiroptical flexible layers through supramolecular helical ordering of conjugated polymer chains. The multiscale chirality and optical activity of these layers can be varied across a broad spectral range by chiral templating. After template removal, chromophores remain in one-dimensional helical nanofibrils, producing a homogeneous chiroptical layer with drastically enhanced polarization-dependent absorbance, enabling well-resolved detection and visualization of the spin angular momentum (SAM) of photons. This study provides a scalable path towards on-chip detection of the spin degree of freedom of photons necessary for encoded quantum information processing and high-resolution polarization imaging.
