Summary: On-site analysis provides qualitative and/or quantitative information of samples at their location, and portable instruments have been widely used for this purpose. Sample preparation plays an important role in most applications due to the limitations of instrument detection and selectivity. This review summarizes the recent advances in on-site sample preparation devices, on-site GC/GC-MS, and on-site optical instruments.

Summary: We developed a portable spectrometer based on Raspberry Pi, incorporating a white LED as the light source, a reflection grating for dispersion, and a CMOS imaging chip for spectral recording. All optical elements and Raspberry Pi were integrated using 3-D printed structures, and a custom software was designed for recording, calibration, analysis, and display. With a built-in battery, the portable spectrometer enables on-site applications. Tested and verified, it provides a spectral resolution of 0.065 nm per pixel in the visible band, making it suitable for on-site spectral testing in various fields.

Summary: Methamphetamine (MA) is a widely consumed synthetic psychoactive drug that is abused worldwide. A new electrochemical method using square wave voltammetry on disposable graphite screen-printed electrodes was explored for the identification of MA. The method exhibited a linear range of 50 µM to 2.5 mM MA, a LOD of 16.7 µM, a LOQ of 50.0 µM, and a sensitivity of 5.3 µA mM-1. The method was selective for MA in mixtures with other drugs of abuse and common adulterants/cutting agents. It showed potential as a fast and easy-to-use method for on-site analysis of confiscated samples.

Summary: We developed a method using portable Raman system and multivariate statistical analysis algorithms for early on-site detection of strawberry anthracnose. By using molecular markers based on Raman spectra, the proposed method can detect anthracnose in strawberry stems 3 days after exposure to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The acquisition time with the fiber-optic probe was 10 s.

Summary: This paper introduces a graphene paper-supported plasmonic substrate for biodetection, which provides stable SERS signals at sub-millimolar concentration and a detection limit down to the nanogram level in the case of hemoglobin. The presence of a graphene underlayer ensures an even surface distribution of SERS hotspots and improved stability of the SERS signal.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increasing use of ractopamine (RAC) as a dietary supplement in animals. The excessive use of RAC has negative impacts on human health. Therefore, there is a growing demand for simple, easy-to-use, and disposable devices for RAC recognition, even in remote areas. In this study, a straightforward colorimetric system based on the etching effect of RAC on AgNPrs was developed to meet this need. The system utilized a nanoprobe with advanced optical properties and stability, which could be used for RAC recognition without the need for any combination or reagents. A simple colorimetric chemosensor integrated with an optimized microfluidic paper-based colorimetric device (mu PCD) was designed and applied to quantify RAC in a chicken sample. The system showed excellent analytical metrics and could be a valuable tool for on-site semi-analytical recognition of harmful substances or illegal drugs.

Summary: Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is enhanced by the introduction of magnetic nanoparticles and plasmonic silver or gold nanoparticles. In this work, modification of magnetite with different chemicals and subsequent decoration with PEI were performed to improve the attachment of plasmonic nanoparticles. The order of decoration was found to affect the signal enhancement, and composites with silver, gold, and magnetite nanoparticles were obtained.

Summary: In this study, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were combined with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to selectively and sensitively detect sulfamethazine (SMZ). The MIP@AgNPs composites showed high selectivity and excellent sensitivity as SERS substrates, with a good linear correlation (R-2 = 0.996) between the Raman signal and SMZ concentration. The method exhibited good stability and reproducibility, and was successfully applied to the analysis of lake water samples.

Summary: The novel probe P1 based on a core-extended perylene tetra-(alkoxycarbonyl) (PTAC) derivative showed high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting fluoride ions, with a 1:1 stoichiometry and a detection limit of 0.97 RM. The probe exhibited a red-shift and fluorescence quenching response in the presence of F-, with emission intensity decreasing linearly with F- concentration. The mechanism of intermolecular proton transfer (IPT) and the theoretical DFT results of the P1-F- complex were also studied.
