Summary: The phototransduction cascade in vertebrate rod visual cells is initiated by the photoactivation of rhodopsin and terminated by the phosphorylation of rhodopsin and binding of arrestin. This study observed the direct formation of the rhodopsin/arrestin complex using X-ray scattering. The concentration of arrestin monomer, rather than the tetramer, correlated with the rate of complex formation.

Summary: The implementation of biocatalysis in flow chemistry aligns with green chemistry principles, but high substrate concentrations are often hindered by solubility issues or toxicity. Continuous synthesis of (S)-2-HPP from benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde in a micro-aqueous system requires spatial distribution of acetaldehyde to maintain sub-toxic levels.

Summary: Enantioselective synthesis of S-2-hydroxypropiophenone (2-HPP) was investigated using free and immobilized whole cells of Pseudomonas putida ATCC 12633 starting from readily-available aldehyde substrates. The study demonstrated that benzoylformate decarboxylase (BFD) produced by induced whole resting cells of P. putida is an efficient biocatalyst for the conversion of benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde into 2-HPP.

Summary: Acetoin is an important aroma-active chemical in cereal vinegars, with Acetobacter pasteurianus playing a significant role in its generation. The study revealed that the alsS1 gene plays a major role in acetoin biosynthesis, with alsS genes assisting strains in assimilating lactate efficiently in a vinegar brewing environment.

Summary: The rates of fluoride elimination and iodination of the Breslow intermediate derived from 2-(1-hydroxy-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)-thiamin provide important information about the reactivity of this class of intermediates. The results give insights into the rates of reactions and the acid-base properties of the intermediate. Comparison with enzyme-catalyzed reactions further highlights the differences in reaction pathways.

Summary: This study presents an alternative route to synthesize the key intermediate, (Z)-2-methoxyimino-2-(furyl-2-yl) acetic acid ammonium salt (SMIA), for cefuroxime production. The traditional chemical synthesis method has disadvantages of high cost and environmental pollution. A biocatalyst was used to replace the traditional chemical synthesis, and optimal enzyme SsPDC was identified. The enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of 2-FHMK was optimized and achieved high yield in a 1-L reactor. This route provides a low-cost and green production method for SMIA on an industrial scale.

Summary: Materials with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have been extensively studied for their application in organic light-emitting diodes. This work presents a strategy to transform non-TADF monomers into TADF oligomers, resulting in efficient TADF emission through the addition of electron-donating carbazole units onto a polymer backbone. The study shows the formation of an intramolecular charge-transfer state in dimers, leading to enhanced TADF emission efficiency.

Summary: The EWSR1::CREM fusion gene, caused by a chromosomal translocation t(10;22)(p11;q12), has been found in various types of cancers with different malignancy levels. The fusion gene leads to production of a chimeric protein, EWSR1::CREM. However, the molecular mechanisms of EWSR1::CREM protein's oncogenic properties have not been systematically characterized. This study used siRNA mediated knockdown to investigate the effects of depletion of EWSR1::CREM protein on gene expression in a melanoma cell line, identified altered pathways and demonstrated the functional differences. The findings contribute to understanding the pathogenesis of tumors with EWSR1::CREM fusion gene and may aid in the development of novel therapeutic strategies.

Summary: This study replicated the data from 77 cases and 44 controls and further investigated the reactivity of CD4+ T cells associated with HCRT. The results showed lower activation of TCRs associated with HCRTNH2 compared to flu antigens, and no significant phenotypic differences were found between the two types of T cells. In addition, the analysis of TCRs did not find evidence of molecular mimicry between HCRT and flu antigens.
