High potential of the genus Allanblackia (Guttiferae): Phytochemistry, pharmacology, and traditional uses over the past half-century

Bel Youssouf G. Mountessou, Joseph Tchamgoue, Iliassou L. Mouafon, Ivan R. Green, Muhammad I. Choudhary, Simeon F. Kouam

Summary: The genus Allanblackia includes ten species of flowering plants that grow in the rainforests of West, Central, and East Africa. These evergreen, medium-sized trees have the largest fruits in the African rainforest, and their stem barks are reddish-brown with small scales. The plants are used in traditional medicine and their seed oils have commercial potential. Chemical analysis has shown that xanthones and biflavonoids are major secondary metabolites in this genus. Some species have exhibited antimicrobial, antileishmanial, anticholinesterase, and cytotoxic activities, making them valuable for new drug discovery.
