Summary: A series of three spin crossover Fe(II) complexes based on a cyanocarbanion and neutral quinolin-8-amine ligands have been studied. These complexes display similar molecular structures and SCO behaviors but differ in transition temperatures, which can be explained by electronic and packing effects of the cyanocarbanion ligands.

Summary: The addition of bipyridyl-embedded cycloparaphenylene nanohoop to an iron(II) complex leads to a distorted octahedral structure with spin-crossover behavior. Computational studies suggest that the size and curvature of the nanohoop play a critical role in determining the SCO properties of the iron(II) complex.

Summary: In this study, co-crystallisation is proposed as a strategy for materials discovery in the field of switchable spin crossover (SCO) systems. By synthesising 11 new cocrystals using different dipyridyl coformers, the authors demonstrate that the supramolecular architecture and spin crossover behavior of the cocrystals can be modified through changing the coformer. This presents a rapid, facile, and highly modular tool for the discovery of new switchable materials, and has the potential for wider applicability in the design of hybrid multifunctional materials.

Summary: In this study, a family of (Fe4L6)-L-II spin-crossover cages based on 2,2'-pyridylbenzimidazoles was reported, and it was found that subtle ligand modifications can lower the spin crossover temperature in CD3CN by up to 186 K. Comparing different pairs of cages, it was observed that CH3 substituents on either the coordination motif or phenylene linker can lower the spin-crossover temperature by different degrees, attributed to electronic effects, steric effects, and a combination of both. The understanding of the interplay between ligand modifications from this study could contribute to the improved rational design of spin-crossover cages.

Summary: In 2019, a unique Fe-II complex with a low-spin ground state was described by our groups. The accessibility of the low-spin state was hindered by slow dynamics of the high-spin to low-spin phase transition. Here, we report the successful control of this spin-crossover process through metal-ion dilutions. The behavior of thermally induced spin-crossover was observed to emerge or be suppressed depending on the radius of the metal ion used for dilution (Ni-II or Zn-II). The reversible photo-switching was confirmed in all mixed-metal complexes where the low-spin state was thermally accessible.

Summary: In this study, shape-morphing electro-thermal actuators are proposed to achieve various pre-programmed movements. The actuators consist of electrically conducting and spin-crossover polymer composite layers, which enable large thermal strain and predictable deformation. The observed movements are primarily governed by the anisotropy of the transformation strain generated by the spin-crossover particles. These self-folding structures have potential applications in remote and small-scale mechanical systems.

Summary: This tutorial review introduces the principles for designing metallosupramolecular cages, with a focus on the design of large and lower symmetry cages. The characterization and identification of cages rely on complementary techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and computational methods. Finally, examples of cages are discussed where these design principles and characterization techniques are applied for specific applications or functions of the cages.

Summary: The design and construction of colorimetric ammonia (NH3) sensors with high selectivity, great stability, and short response times at room temperature are crucial for human health and food safety. This study presents a chiral supramolecular FeII4L4 metal-organic cage (MOC-1) that can detect NH3(g) in under 10 seconds at room temperature and was used to monitor food safety on fresh bacon bits at 4 degrees C. The MOC-1 sensor demonstrated superior selectivity among NH3(g) and twelve other analytes, and the sensing mechanism is associated with a high-spin to low-spin transition of the Fe-II ions.
