1H NMR-based metabonomic analysis of brain in rats of morphine dependence and withdrawal intervention

Metabolic consequences of morphine dependence and withdrawal intervention have not been well explored. In the present study, the metabolic changes in brain hippocampus, nucleus accumbens (NAc), prefrontal cortex (PFC) and striatum of rats with morphine dependence and withdrawal intervention were explored by using H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance coupled with principal component analysis, partial least squares and orthogonal signal correction analysis. We found that the concentrations of neurotransmitters including glutamate, glutamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid changed differentially in hippocampus, NAc, PFC and striatum after repeated morphine treatment. Significant changes were also found in a number of cerebral metabolites including N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), lactic acid, creatine, myo-inositol and taurine. These findings indicate the profound disturbances of energy metabolism, amino acid metabolism and neurotransmitters caused by chronic morphine treatment. Interestingly, morphine-induced changes in lactic acid, creatine and NAA were clearly reversed by intervention of methadone or clonidine. Our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the metabolic alteration associated with morphine addiction and withdrawal therapy, which may help to develop new pharmacotherapies. Application of chelate GLDA for remediating Cd-contaminated farmlands using Tagetes patula L.

Summary: In this study, the potential of chelate tetrasodium glutamate diacetate (GLDA) combined with Tagetes patula L. to remediate cadmium-contaminated soil was investigated. The results showed that GLDA application significantly increased the biomass and cadmium content of Tagetes patula, indicating the efficacy of GLDA for the remediation of cadmium-contaminated farmlands.

Bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoids with potential anti-inflammatory and anti-HIV activities from the stems and leaves of Morinda citrifolia

Summary: A new bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid, morincitrinoid A (1), was isolated from the stems and leaves of Morinda citrifolia L., along with five known analogues (2-6), through phytochemical study. The chemical structure of 1 was determined by comprehensive spectral analysis. Compounds 1-6 exhibited significant anti-inflammatory and anti-HIV activities, inhibiting NO production and HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) with comparable or better potency than hydrocortisone, indicating their potential therapeutic value.

Population total and unbound pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of ciprofol and M4 in subjects with various renal functions

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PK) model for ciprofol and its major metabolite M4, and link it to the population pharmacodynamics (PD) model in subjects with different renal functions. The study found that the PK of ciprofol and M4 could be best described by three-compartment and two-compartment models, respectively. The concentrations of ciprofol and M4 were linked using a linear protein binding model. Hemoglobin and uric acid were identified as covariates affecting the clearance of ciprofol and M4. The developed model provides a comprehensive understanding of the PK and PD of ciprofol.

Comparative architecture in monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells

Summary: Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells (PSTSCs) have the potential to overcome the efficiency limit of single-junction silicon solar cells by combining the wider bandgap of a semitransparent perovskite solar cell (PSC) with the ability of a narrow bandgap silicon solar cell to convert infrared light. However, the actual efficiency of PSTSCs is currently below the theoretical limit, and challenges in stability and upscaling need to be addressed.

Estimation of fetal and pediatric doses from chest CT examinations using virtualdose software

Summary: This study estimated the fetal and pediatric doses from chest CT scans performed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Organ and effective doses were calculated using VirtualDose-CT software. The results showed that fetal absorbed doses ranged from 0.04 to 0.61 mGy depending on the gestational age, and extending the scan range to the abdominal region increased fetal doses by almost 4-fold. The findings provide valuable information for radiologists and patients to minimize unnecessary radiation exposure.

Fine-tuning the active site terminal oxygen Mo=O of practical active phase via an isomorphous-substitution method for the reaction of isobutene to methacrolein

Summary: Mo-Bi based catalysts have attracted attention for the oxidation reaction of isobutene to methacrolein. Most studies focus on the reaction mechanism and catalytic active sites, but fail to reflect the real reaction process on commercial catalyst surfaces. This research demonstrates that fine-tuning the active phase structure can greatly enhance the catalytic performances, providing a new perspective for developing high-performance catalysts.

Enhanced methane production from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge by combining ultrasound with potassium permanganate pretreatment

Summary: This survey investigated the influence of ultrasound (US) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) co-pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS). The results showed that the co-treatment significantly increased the cumulative methane yield and improved the biodegradability of soluble organics. The analysis also revealed that US + KMnO4 pretreatment enhanced the biochemical methane potential, hydrolysis rate, and relative abundance of functional microorganisms associated with anaerobic digestion.

Secondary Anti-Solvent Treatment for Efficient 2D Dion-Jacobson Perovskite Solar Cells

Thermophysiological and Perceptual Responses of Amateur Healthcare Workers: Impacts of Ambient Condition, Inner-Garment Insulation and Personal Cooling Strategy

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of environmental heat stress and personal cooling strategies on the physiological and perceptual responses of college students wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). The results showed that PPE can help mitigate heat stress, and the use of cooling systems can further reduce heat strain. The perceptual responses improved significantly with the use of personal cooling systems.

Floating Seawater Splitting Device Based on NiFeCrMo Metal Hydroxide Electrocatalyst and Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells

Summary: In this paper, a two-dimensional nanosheet quaternary metal hydroxide catalyst composed of Ni, Fe, Cr, and Mo elements was reported. By in situ electrochemical activation, the catalyst obtained higher metal valence states and many O vacancies, providing excellent catalytic activity and corrosion resistance in overall alkaline seawater electrolysis. The floating solar seawater splitting device showed an efficiency of solar energy to hydrogen of 20.61 +/- 0.77%.

Surface Defects Management by In Situ Etching with Methanol for Efficient Inverted Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Summary: An innovative in-situ etching (ISE) method using methanol is proposed to reduce surface defects in inorganic perovskite solar cells (IPSCs). The treatment with methanol leads to a decrease in surface defects and the passivation of grain boundary defects, resulting in a reduction in trap density and improved charge carrier extraction. The efficiency of the IPSCs is enhanced from 16.00% to 19.34% using this method.

Dynamic Strength Characteristics of Cement-Improved Silty Clay under the Effect of Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of freeze-thaw cycles on the dynamic strength properties of silty clay fillers before and after cement improvement, and quantifies the improvement effects of cement improvement. The results show that cement modification significantly improves the dynamic strength parameters of silty clay even after multiple freeze-thaw cycles, providing a useful reference for subgrade improvement along the silty clay railway in northern China.

A new piezoelectric hybrid metal thiocyanide for energy harvesting and human motion sensing

Summary: Hybrid organic-inorganic piezoelectrics have gained attention for their fascinating performance, ease of synthesis, and mechanical flexibility. However, most reported systems contain toxic heavy metals or are unstable due to metal halide bonds. In this research, a stable zero-dimensional hybrid piezoelectric material based on an environmentally friendly anion of SCN- was synthesized. The resulting flexible composite films showed exceptional mechanical energy harvesting properties, outperforming state-of-the-art piezoelectric devices, with excellent durability and stability.

Photomodulatory effects in the hypothalamus of sleep-deprived young and aged rats

Summary: Mood disorders caused by chemotherapy have become more important as cancer patients' survival increases. This study used methotrexate to induce mood disorders in rats and found that treatment with the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can alleviate anxiety and depression-like behaviors, increase antioxidant capacity, reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory response, and regulate brain chemistry. The findings suggest that NAC treatment could be an effective strategy in revising the treatment for individuals suffering from chemotherapy-induced mood disorders.

Continuous high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation at extremely low intensity affects exploratory behavior and spatial cognition in mice

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of extremely low intensity HF-rTMS on cognition in mice and found that 40 Hz rTMS significantly impaired exploratory behavior and spatial memory at both 10 mT and 1 mT conditions. Additionally, 40 Hz stimulation had remarkably different effects on exploratory behavior depending on intensity, compared to 10 Hz stimulation.

Clinical effects of anodal tDCS and identifying response markers in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): An open-label study

Summary: This study examined the efficacy of tDCS for PTSD and related symptoms, as well as the factors that may predict response to tDCS. Self-esteem and cortical thickness correlate with aggression in healthy children: A surface-based analysis

Summary: Aggression can have serious consequences, but little is known about its personality and neurological origins in children. This study investigated the relationship between self-esteem, aggression, and brain structure in healthy children, and found that self-esteem was negatively associated with aggression. The study also revealed that increased cortical thickness in certain brain areas may be a potential mechanism linking low self-esteem to aggression in children.

Role of serotonin in the lack of sensitization caused by prolonged food deprivation in Aplysia

Summary: Food deprivation can lead to neurological dysfunctions, including memory impairment. This study used Aplysia as an animal model to investigate the memory deficits caused by prolonged food deprivation. The results showed that 14 days of food deprivation decreased the level of 5-HT in the hemolymph, which contributed to the lack of sensitization and its cellular correlates. However, exogenous application of 5-HT partially induced sensitization in the food deprived animals.

The effects of a dual orexin receptor antagonist on fear extinction memory and sleep in mice: Implications for exposure therapy

Summary: The study found that intervention with the dual orexin receptor antagonist suvorexant did not have the expected effects on extinction memory and sleep. Higher percentages of REM sleep were associated with poorer extinction memory recall and stronger fear responses. Additionally, the fear extinction training protocol used in this study did not lead to complete fear extinction.

A reliable Coordinated Function Index (CFI) was proposed based on these parameters and simplified for improved assessment efficacy.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation does not affect microscale learning
