Foetal exposure to lead (Pb) during pregnancy is a major problem. However, no previous study has examined whether Pb concentrations in blood (Pb-B) and in serum (Pb-S) from pregnant women correlate with Pb-B and Pb-S in the foetuses. This hypothesis was tested in the present study. We measured Pb-B and Pb-S in 120 healthy pregnant women (more than 38 weeks of gestation) and their respective umbilical cord samples. The analyses were carried out with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. We found higher Pb-B levels in the women compared with their respective umbilical cord samples (1.736 +/- 0.090 mu g/dL and 1.194 +/- 0.062 mu g/dL, respectively; p < 0.05). In parallel, we found higher Pb-S levels in the women compared with their respective umbilical cord samples (0.042 +/- 0.003 mu g/dL and 0.032 +/- 0.003 mu g/dL, respectively; p < 0.05). However, similar %Pb-S/Pb-B ratios were found in the women compared with their respective umbilical cord samples (2.414 +/- 0.210% and 2.740 +/- 0.219%, respectively; p > 0.05). Interestingly, we found positive correlations between Pb-B in the umbilical cords and Pb-B in the respective pregnant women (rs = 0.5714; p < 0.0001), and between Pb-S in the umbilical cords and Pb-S in the respective pregnant women (rs = 0.3902; p < 0.0001) as well as between %Pb-B/Pb-S in the umbilical cords and %Pb-B/Pb-S in the respective pregnant women (rs = 0.3767; p < 0.0001). These results indicate that the assessment of Pb-B and Pb-S in pregnant women provides relevant indexes of foetal exposure to Pb. Moreover, the similar %Pb-S/Pb-B in pregnant women and in the umbilical cords shows that the foetuses are directly exposed to the rapidly exchangeable Pb fraction found in their mothers.

Association of Urinary and Blood Concentrations of Heavy Metals with Measures of Bone Mineral Density Loss: a Data Mining Approach with the Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Joao Paulo B. Ximenez, Ariane Zamarioli, Melissa A. Kacena, Rommel Melgaco Barbosa, Fernando Barbosa Jr

Summary: This study examined the impact of exposure to multiple heavy metals on bone density using NHANES data, and found that age, body mass index, and urinary concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, and tungsten play significant roles in bone mineral density loss. The classification model based on these factors achieved high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in predicting bone density loss, highlighting the importance of arsenic, cadmium, and tungsten in overall bone health.

Summary: Dried Blood Spot (DBS) was evaluated as a solid sampling strategy for Fe and Zn determination in blood samples using Solid Sampling High-Resolution Continuum Source Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (SS HR-CS GF AAS). Results showed good correlation between the area of DBS and blood volume, as well as improved stability and peak profile of Zn with the use of chemical modifier. The proposed method provided accurate Fe and Zn determination results with a high sample throughput.

Summary: Canine leishmaniasis is a chronic disease caused by Leishmania infantum, and the limitations of current treatments have led to the exploration of new alternatives, such as the use of immunomodulatory nutrients. This study aimed to determine the levels of vitamin A, vitamin D, and zinc in dogs with CanL and the effects of supplementation with these nutrients on spleen leukocyte cultures. The results suggest that the tested nutrients may play a role in the leishmanicidal mechanism and warrant further investigation in future studies.

Validation and Application of a Methodology for Quantifying Levels of Parabens in Sports Supplements from Brazil Using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Bruno A. Rocha, Cibele A. Cesila, Airton C. Martins, Marilia C. O. Souza, Fernando Barbosa Jr

Summary: A study established a method for detecting five commonly used parabens in sports supplements, revealing that almost all samples contained at least one paraben, with ethylparaben and methylparaben being the most frequently detected. Propylparaben, butylparaben, and benzylparaben, which are forbidden in food samples, were also found in some samples.

Summary: The study found that the majority of the participants had more than adequate iodine intake, but nearly a quarter of women of childbearing age were iodine deficient. There was a strong correlation between urinary iodine concentration and urinary sodium concentration, indicating the important impact of individual iodized salt consumption on urinary iodine concentration.

Summary: This study evaluated the assistance provided to women victims of sexual violence and their participation in follow-up treatment. It found that the majority of victims were young, low-educated, white women. Most incidents occurred at night in public places and were committed by unknown offenders. The study also reported a high acceptance of prophylaxis interventions against STIs and unwanted pregnancies, with no cases of seroconversion to HIV or HBV detected.

Fundao tailings dam failure in Brazil: Evidence of a population exposed to high levels of Al, As, Hg, and Ni after a human biomonitoring study

Ana Carolina Cavalheiro Paulelli, Cibele Aparecida Cesila, Paula Picoli Devoz, Silvana Ruella de Oliveira, Joao Paulo Bianchi Ximenez, Walter dos Reis Pedreira Filho, Fernando Barbosa Jr

Summary: The study conducted in communities directly affected by the disaster revealed high levels of exposure to toxic metals such as aluminum, arsenic, mercury, and nickel. Factors such as community, drinking water, fish and seafood consumption, and smoking habits were found to be associated with metal/metalloid levels in their body. Well and tap water intake were identified as important sources of exposure to aluminum and nickel. The findings represent health risks to the groups living in the areas affected by the tailings dam failure, calling for further studies to evaluate the potential health effects of high exposure to metals and remediation actions from public health Brazilian authorities.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and the level of understanding among puerperal women. A total of 225 patients were evaluated through interviews and medical records. The results showed a seropositivity rate of 40% and identified primiparity as a protective factor and low education as a risk factor. Increasing knowledge about the risk of toxoplasmosis could reduce infection and vertical transmission rates.
