Fetuin-A: A Novel Biomarker of Bone Damage in Early Axial Spondyloarthritis. Results of an Interim Analysis of the SPACE Study

Marta Favero, Francesca Ometto, Elisa Belluzzi, Giacomo Cozzi, Laura Scagnellato, Francesca Oliviero, Pietro Ruggieri, Andrea Doria, Mariagrazia Lorenzin, Roberta Ramonda

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between fetuin-A levels and radiographic sacroiliitis and syndesmophytes in early axSpA patients, and to identify potential predictors of radiographic damage. Results showed that fetuin-A levels were negatively associated with sacroiliac joint damage and may serve as a biomarker for predicting early structural damage.

Serum Biomarkers in Connective Tissue Disease-Associated Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Beatrice Moccaldi, Laura De Michieli, Marco Binda, Giulia Famoso, Roberto Depascale, Martina Perazzolo Marra, Andrea Doria, Elisabetta Zanatta

Summary: CTD-PAH is a life-threatening complication of connective tissue diseases characterized by increased pulmonary arterial pressure and resistance. Due to non-specific symptoms and lack of consensus on screening strategies, CTD-PAH is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Non-invasive tools, particularly novel serum biomarkers, may improve early diagnosis and disease monitoring of CTD-PAH.

Intravenous anakinra to curb cytokine storm in adult-onset Still?s disease and in macrophage activation syndrome: A case series

Sara Bindoli, Paola Galozzi, Andrea Doria, Paolo Sfriso

Summary: Objective: Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is an auto-inflammatory polygenic disorder, for which clinical diagnosis is essential. Anti-interleukin (IL)-1 therapy is considered a milestone in treating AOSD. This study presents the short-term efficacy of intravenous (IV) anakinra, an IL-1 receptor blocker, in patients with newly-diagnosed AOSD or upcoming macrophage activation syndrome (MAS).

Predictors of flare in SLE patients fulfilling lupus low disease activity state: a cohort study of 292 patients with 36-month follow-up

Rita N. Cunha, Liliana Saraiva, Diogo Jesus, Andrea Doria, Jose P. da Silva, Luis S. Ines

Summary: This study found that anti-U1RNP, SLE-DAS score, and the need for immunosuppressants in patients with LLDAS predict a higher risk of disease flare. Remission without the use of glucocorticoids is associated with a lower risk of flare.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the demographic, clinical, and laboratory features of systemic sclerosis sine scleroderma (ssSSc) within a large SSc cohort. The results showed that ssSSc has longer duration of RP, milder disease course, and higher positivity of anticentromere antibodies compared to lcSSc and dcSSc.

Spondyloarthritis with inflammatory bowel disease: the latest on biologic and targeted therapies

Giacomo Cozzi, Laura Scagnellato, Mariagrazia Lorenzin, Edoardo Savarino, Fabiana Zingone, Francesca Ometto, Marta Favero, Andrea Doria, Stephan R. Vavricka, Roberta Ramonda

Summary: Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a group of chronic inflammatory diseases affecting the axial and peripheral joints, tendons, and entheses. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is strongly associated with SpA and has significant impacts on patients' quality of life. Effective treatment requires close collaboration between gastroenterologists and rheumatologists to identify and manage joint and intestinal manifestations, and current drug options for both conditions remain limited.

Summary: Patients with connective tissue diseases, specifically idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, are at risk of developing interstitial lung disease (ILD), with some cases progressing to a fibrosing ILD phenotype (PF-ILD). This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and factors predicting PF-ILD in IIMs, as well as assess the radiological pattern and associated factors of IIMs-ILD.

Summary: Several studies show that age at onset has an impact on the clinical-serological presentation, comorbidities and disease course of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study evaluated the correlation between age at onset and clinical-serological manifestations and comorbidities in patients with recent onset SLE. The results showed that early onset SLE had a more active immunological profile, while late onset SLE had a higher incidence of comorbidities.
