Summary: Photopolymerization is gaining interest in both industrial and academic fields due to its high reaction kinetics, low emissions of organic solvents, and reduced shrinking stress. This method has mainly been developed for radical polymerization of vinyl monomers and to a lesser extent for ring-opening polymerization (ROP). With the emergence of new initiating systems, the photopolymerization of various cyclic monomers has expanded beyond epoxides, which were the first monomers polymerized by cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP).

Summary: This research synthesized and characterized four potential phosphine oxide photoinitiators and evaluated their efficiency in photopolymerization at 405 nm wavelength. Two of the obtained photoinitiators showed better performance than the widely used commercial photoinitiator. Additionally, one of the synthesized photoinitiators was successfully used in 3D printing of thermoplastics and exhibited lower cytotoxicity compared to the benchmark structure.

Summary: Thermoset materials, which have excellent thermal and mechanical properties, are widely used in high-performance plastics. However, their lack of degradability has been a problem. This study demonstrates for the first time that an industrial thermoset material, polydicyclopentadiene, can be additively manufactured with degradable linkages using a photochemical approach. The resulting objects can be rapidly degraded to soluble byproducts through acid treatment. This work highlights the potential of ring-opening metathesis polymerization chemistry for creating degradable materials suitable for advanced manufacturing processes.

Summary: The in-situ anionic polymerization of e-caprolactam enables the production of fiber reinforced composites using thermoplastic resin transfer molding. The simultaneous processes of polymerization and crystallization, along with their reaction kinetics, are central to the flow front propagation and solidification. By preparing reactive mixtures of e-caprolactam, activator, and initiator under an inert atmosphere, a solvent-based kinetic model was established and correlated to dielectric sensor data for real-time prediction of the total conversion.

Summary: We have shown that arylchlorodiazirines can be used as photo-activated halocarbene precursors for the selective one-carbon ring expansion of N-substituted pyrroles and indoles, yielding pyridinium and quinolinium salts. Initial investigations suggest that this strategy can also be applied to convert N-substituted pyrazoles into pyrimidinium salts. The N-substituent of the substrate plays a crucial role in expanding the substrate scope, enhancing yields, and activating the azinium products for further synthetic manipulations. This study also highlights the safety advantages of photolyzing the diazirines instead of thermolyzing them, as revealed by thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Summary: Photochemical techniques have seen a revival due to their adaptability and ability to produce complex macromolecular structures, although their application in the polymerization of cyclic siloxane monomers has been limited. This study investigated the cationic ring-opening polymerization of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) using diphenyl iodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPI) as the initiator. Both direct and indirect initiation systems were examined, using benzophenone and pyrene to generate photochemically induced protonic acids and silylium cations for the polymerization. Kinetics of the polymerization were monitored using viscosimetry and GPC analysis. This approach has potential industrial importance for polysiloxane fabrication due to its ability to overcome challenges associated with conventional methods.

Summary: ε-Thionocaprolactone (TCL) can be easily copolymerized with vinyl esters to form degradable copolymers, with the molecular weight and dispersity controlled through xanthate-mediated RAFT polymerization. Analysis of the copolymer structure reveals a high level of TCL-TCL dyads, suggesting that the terminal copolymerization model is not accurate for describing TCL copolymerization.

Summary: A novel Ketyl Mediated Polymerization (KMP) is developed by introducing ketyl radical anion species, which enables radical polymerization at the carbon radical site and anionic ring-opening polymerization at the oxygen anion site. Through KMP, organic synthesis and polymerization can be achieved simultaneously in one pot, resulting in the successful preparation of small molecules and polymers with low molecular weight distribution. This work expands the reaction mode and method libraries of organic chemistry and polymer chemistry, saving time, labor, resources, and energy.

Summary: This study presents a strategy to program photodegradability into vinylic polymers by utilizing the wavelength selectivity of photocycloadditions for radical ring-opening polymerization (rROP). Coumarin terminated allylic sulfides were irradiated with UVA light to initiate intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition, generating cyclic macromonomers. Copolymers with photoreactivity inherited from the cyclic parent monomer were synthesized through subsequent RAFT-mediated rROP with methyl acrylate. Efficient photocycloreversion of the coumarin dimers upon UVB irradiation led to polymer degradation within minutes under UVB light or days under sunlight. This synthetic strategy enables the incorporation of photolabile linkages into vinylic polymers, tuning degradation for specific wavelengths.

Summary: Aliphatic polycarbonates are highly regarded for being sustainable, biodegradable, and biocompatible. Recently, photobase generators have made cyclic carbonates available for light-induced anionic ring-opening polymerization, leading to the formation of pure aliphatic polycarbonate networks. The polymerization mechanism was investigated using photo-DSC and photorheology on synthesized cyclic carbonates. Different ratios of reactive diluent to crosslinker were tested to obtain materials with tunable mechanical properties.
