Aerosol generation events due to combustion processes are characterized by high particle emissions in the nucleation mode range. Such particles are characterized by very short atmospheric lifetimes, leading to rapid decay in time and space from the emission point. Therefore, the deposited fraction of inhaled particles (dose) also changes. In fact, close to the emission source, high short-term peak exposures occur. The related exposure estimates should therefore rely on measurements of aerosol number-size distributions able to track rapid aerosol dynamics. In order to study the influence of the time resolution on such estimates, simultaneous measurements were carried out via Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPS) spectrometers during particle generation events in both indoor (cooking activities) and outdoor (airstrip and urban street canyons) microenvironments. Aerosol size distributions in the range 16-520 nm were measured by SMPS and FMPS at frequencies of 0.007 s(-1) and 1 s(-1), respectively. Based on the two datasets, respiratory dosimetry estimates were made on the basis of the deposition model of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. During cooking activities, SMPS measurements give an approximate representation of aerosol temporal evolution. Consequently, the related instant doses can be approximated to a fair degree. In the two outdoor microenvironments considered, aerosol size distributions change rapidly: the FMPS is able to follow such evolution, whereas the SMPS is not. The high short-term peak concentrations, and the consequent respiratory doses, evidenced by FMPS data are hardly described by SMPS, which is unable to track the fast aerosol changes. The health relevance of such short peak exposures has not been thoroughly investigated in scientific literature, therefore, in the present paper highly time-resolved and size-resolved dosimetry estimates were provided in order to deepen this aspect. The airborne contagiousness of respiratory viruses: A comparative analysis and implications for mitigation

Alex Mikszewski, Luca Stabile, Giorgio Buonanno, Lidia Morawska

Summary: This study assesses the contagiousness of SARS-CoV-2 and compares it with other respiratory pathogens. The research finds that the transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 is similar to active untreated TB, higher than seasonal influenza, and lower than measles virus. The current ventilation standards may not be sufficient to control the spread of highly contagious viruses like SARS-CoV-2 in crowded settings, indicating the need for additional control measures.

The Presence of Aromatic Substances in Incense: Determining Indoor Air Quality and Its Impact on Human Health

Cristina Di Fiore, Pietro Pandolfi, Fabiana Carriera, Alessia Iannone, Gaetano Settimo, Vincenzo Mattei, Pasquale Avino

Summary: Indoor air quality is a major concern, and burning incense has been identified as a primary source of volatile organic compounds, particularly benzene. This study evaluated the emissions of volatile organic compounds, specifically benzene, in indoor environments through experiments in a clean room. The results showed that incense sticks emitted benzene at concentrations ranging from 11.1 to 66.5 & mu;g m(-3), which were 2.5 times lower than the recommended limit for non-occupational indoor exposure set by ACGIH. This research highlights the significant effects of burning incense in private and public indoor settings, considering the health risks associated with benzene and the lack of precise legislation on indoor air quality in residential areas.

Natural Fiano Wines Fermented in Stainless Steel Tanks, Oak Barrels, and Earthenware Amphora

Massimo Di Renzo, Francesco Letizia, Catello Di Martino, Julian Karaulli, Renata Kongoli, Bruno Testa, Pasquale Avino, Ettore Guerriero, Gianluca Albanese, Mario Monaco, Massimo Iorizzo

Summary: The growing interest in sustainability has led to an increase in sales of natural wines. These wines are produced using native vines, indigenous yeasts, no additives, irregular temperature control during fermentation, and minimal sulfites. A study comparing the chemical and sensory characteristics of natural wines produced in different vessels reveals that amphora and wooden barrels result in wines with higher concentrations of higher alcohols and esters. The type of container used significantly influences the composition of the wine, and the ancestral winemaking process used for Fiano wines without starter yeasts or chemical additives contributes to their distinctive sensory profile.

Simultaneous decreases in NO2 levels and disparities in California during the COVID-19 pandemic

Hyung Joo Lee, Toshihiro Kuwayama, Michael Fitzgibbon

Summary: This study investigated the changes in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) air pollution levels and their disparities in California, U.S. during the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The results showed a decrease in NO2 concentrations, especially in urban and high-traffic areas. However, socially vulnerable populations still experienced higher levels of NO2 exposure. The study suggests that reducing NO2 disparities, particularly racial inequity, can be achieved through continued regulatory actions targeting traffic-related NOx emissions.

Contribution of chemical composition to oxidative potential of atmospheric particles at a rural and an urban site in the Po Valley: Influence of high ammonia agriculture emissions

Maria Chiara Pietrogrande, Beatrice Biffi, Cristina Colombi, Eleonora Cuccia, Umberto Dal Santo, Luisa Romanato

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and oxidative potential of PM10 particles in the Po Valley, Italy, and demonstrates the impact of high levels of atmosphere ammonia. The rural area had significantly higher ammonia concentrations compared to the urban site, resulting in higher levels of secondary inorganic aerosol. Although the SIA components did not contribute significantly to the PM10 oxidative reactivity, they were correlated with the oxidative potential measurements. This suggests that the contribution of SIA to PM oxidative toxicity cannot be ignored.
