Summary: The study found a relatively high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in rural Chinese adults, with females more likely to be affected than males. Risk factors for MS included being elderly, having lower income, lower education level, and being unemployed, with females at higher risk. There were sex-specific associations between socioeconomic status and MS.

Summary: This study found that simultaneous diagnosis of the main components of metabolic syndrome played a significant mediator role between income level and stroke incidence. A lower income level was associated with a higher risk of being diagnosed with multiple components of metabolic syndrome and a higher risk of stroke. In individuals receiving medical aid, the simultaneous diagnosis of metabolic components acted as an important mediator between income levels and stroke incidence.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with kidney cancer and the impact of age and gender on such an association. The study used the Korean National Health Insurance Service database to follow up 9,932,670 subjects who had check-ups in 2009 until the diagnosis of kidney cancer or death or until 2019. The results showed that kidney cancer was significantly associated with MetS, with a higher association in younger age groups and higher associations with obesity and central obesity in younger aged male population.

Summary: Environmental factors, including physical activity, dietary habits, and mental and socioeconomic status, have an impact on the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents. This study analyzed the prevalence of MetS in Korean middle- and high-school students and found that the risk was higher for boys, individuals with depression, and high-school students. Factors such as low aerobic activity, high calorie intake, and low weekly breakfast consumption frequency increased the risk of MetS, while high aerobic activity, low sedentary time, and frequent breakfast consumption were associated with a lower risk.

Summary: This study examined the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) and unhealthy lifestyle on cancer incidence and mortality. Low income increased the risk of cancer-related death with a social gradient, while unhealthy behaviors increased the risk of cancer incidence and mortality. The joint effect was strongest for certain types of cancer, and the effect was stronger with cancer-specific mortality than with incidence.

Summary: This study demonstrated a negative association between nut consumption and MetS risk, especially walnuts and pistachios could reduce the risk of MetS. Among adults, consuming nuts higher than the median and engaging in moderate to high physical activity levels significantly decreased the risk of MetS. Non-smokers were more likely to reduce their risk of MetS, and individuals with higher education levels also showed a tendency to lower their risk of MetS.

Summary: This study found that socioeconomic disadvantages in adolescents were associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome independent of lifestyle factors. There was a dose-response relationship between the number of accumulated socioeconomic disadvantages and the risk of MetS. Adolescents with low-educated mothers or who accumulated more than three disadvantages demonstrated a higher MetS risk score compared to non-disadvantaged groups.

Summary: Over 110,000 companion animals are abandoned in Republic of Korea each year, and it is important to analyze the causes and implement policies. Veterinary costs have been blamed for this issue above other factors such as socioeconomic status, cost and behavior issues of the animals, or housing restrictions. This study found a significant correlation between veterinary costs, socioeconomic factors, and animal abandonment in Republic of Korea.

Summary: This study projected future smoking prevalence by socioeconomic status in England and revealed the need to reduce both absolute and relative inequalities in smoking. Smoking prevalence is expected to decline overall, but with substantial differences across socioeconomic groups. Meeting England's tobacco-free ambition target requires reducing inequalities in smoking by socioeconomic status.

Summary: Adiponectin, a cytokine derived from adipocytes, has cardioprotective effects. While early and epidemiologic studies did not find a relationship between adiponectin and coronary artery disease, larger-scale studies reported a paradoxical increase in all-cause and cardiovascular mortality with higher adiponectin levels. The underlying mechanisms behind this paradox are still unclear. Differentiating between different subtypes of heart failure may help understand the adiponectin-mortality relationship. Mendelian randomization studies should be interpreted with caution due to potential confounding factors.

Summary: Cardio-oncology is an emerging field aiming to reduce cancer treatment-related cardiovascular toxicities and improve outcomes in Asia, where cancer and cardiovascular diseases are growing exponentially. This state-of-the-art review discusses the unique challenges in establishing cardio-oncology in Asia, including socio-economic disparity, ethnical and racial diversity, and limited training opportunities. It also provides strategies to overcome these barriers and help advance the field of cardio-oncology in Asia.

Summary: This study found that twice-daily dosing of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) may lead to reduced drug adherence and worsen clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The adherence to each NOAC and the subsequent clinical outcomes were compared between different dosing regimens. The results showed that adherence was high and similar between once- and twice-daily dosing regimens, but patients with low adherence had poorer clinical outcomes regardless of the dosing frequency.

Summary: Hepatic dysfunction is common in TPN patients and can be caused by steatosis, cholestasis, and cholecystitis. Regular assessments are necessary, even for stable patients on long-term TPN. It is important to establish a differential diagnosis and investigate other potential causes of elevated liver enzymes. We present a case of a malnourished patient on TPN who had significantly elevated liver enzymes due to concurrent use of traditional Chinese herbal medications. Liver enzymes returned to normal levels after discontinuing the herbal medications.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between cardiovascular events and elevated on-treatment diastolic blood pressure at different levels in individuals who achieved systolic blood pressure targets. The results showed that elevated on-treatment diastolic blood pressure according to the JNC7 definition was associated with a higher risk of major cardiovascular events, while elevated diastolic blood pressure according to the 2017 ACC/AHA definition was only associated with a higher risk of stroke.
