Summary: This study evaluated the concordance between ESC/EASD-2019 guidelines and Steno-Risk cardiovascular risk scales in individuals with T1D without CVD, showing that Steno-Risk was better at identifying patients with atherosclerosis compared to ESC/EASD-2019.

Summary: This study examines trends in county-level hypertension-related cardiovascular disease (CVD) death rates and finds significant increases, particularly among adults aged 35 to 64 years. The study highlights the need for intensified clinical and public health actions to improve hypertension prevention, detection, and control in order to reduce CVD deaths across counties.

Summary: This study aims to explore the distribution features and trends of dementia mortality in China from 2011 to 2020 and make predictions for the next decade. Data were collected from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Disease Surveillance Points system and analyzed using Joinpoint regression. The study found that the crude mortality rate of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias increased during 2011-2020, while the age-standardized mortality rate slightly decreased. The predicted trends for the next decade indicate an increase in the crude mortality rate and a decline in the age-standardized mortality rate.

Summary: This study found that lower TRAIL levels are associated with stroke severity, unfavorable functional outcomes, and short-term mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Additionally, lower TRAIL levels were also associated with markers of cardiac injury and ECG changes.

Summary: The study found that influenza vaccination in heart failure patients was associated with a lower risk of mortality and cardiovascular mortality during the influenza season, but a higher risk of hospitalization. There was no significant association between influenza vaccination and all-cause mortality during the non-influenza season.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, particularly in individuals over the age of 65, with myocardial infarction and stroke being the primary contributors. The development of vascular aging and vascular calcification with aging is not fully understood, but is believed to be influenced by genetic risk, environmental factors, and the ability of vascular smooth muscle cells to acquire an osteogenic phenotype. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind age-associated vascular pathology may lead to strategies for promoting healthy vascular aging. This article provides a summary of current knowledge on age-associated vascular disease, with a focus on vascular calcification.

Summary: This study found that individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a high prevalence of comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors, which are independently associated with reduced kidney function. The odds of reduced kidney function increased linearly as the number of major comorbid conditions increased, with a stronger effect observed for cardiovascular comorbidities.

Summary: Frailty has been increasing over time regardless of education and income levels, but the association between frailty and 5-year mortality has remained stable. While the highest education and income levels had the highest mean HFRS scores, the lowest education and income levels accounted for greater proportions among the frail, particularly in earlier birth cohorts. Trends varied slightly by sex and age, with frailty being more strongly associated with mortality among men.

Summary: This nationwide registry-based cohort study explored mortality and causes of death among Norwegian patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) compared with the general population. The study found that even in the era of modern treatments, RA and axSpA patients still have a shortened life expectancy. The leading causes of death for all patient groups as well as the general population were cardiovascular diseases, neoplasms, and respiratory diseases.

Summary: From 2006 to 2015, hospitalization rates for major cardiovascular complications decreased in South Korean diabetes patients, while rates for heart failure and peripheral artery disease increased. From 2007 to 2015, mortality rates for cancer, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, heart disease, and hypertensive disease decreased, but mortality rate for pneumonia increased. Overall, there was a continuous reduction in cardiovascular complications and mortality in adults with diabetes, but efforts are needed to prevent certain diabetes complications.

Summary: A clear sex-specific pattern for SHBG levels with age was observed, with men showing a linear increase and women exhibiting a U-shaped pattern. Participants with more cardiovascular risk factors had lower SHBG levels. When stratified by age, older participants had higher SHBG levels. Multivariate models including specific factors explained a significant portion of the variance in SHBG levels. It is important to consider age-related changes in SHBG levels to avoid controversial results in assessing cardiovascular risk associated with SHBG.

Summary: The study reveals that high-income countries have a more significant downward trend in noncommunicable disease mortality compared to middle-income countries, with cardiovascular disease declining more than cancer. In 10 high-income countries, cancer exceeded cardiovascular disease in premature deaths in 2000, and all countries had this trend by 2019; in contrast, cardiovascular disease mortality exceeded cancer in all 10 middle-income countries in 2000 and remained the leading cause in eight countries by 2019.

Summary: This study investigated the association between different levels of polypharmacy and mortality among older adults. The results showed that both polypharmacy and heightened polypharmacy were related to all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease deaths. Heightened polypharmacy was also related to cancer mortality. The study suggests that greater attention to polypharmacy in general for older people may reduce adverse effects and improve their health.

Summary: This article provides an updated description of strategies and tools to improve appropriateness of drug use in older adults by reviewing published literature. The effectiveness and sustainability of each strategy and tool largely depend on local and heterogeneous experiences, resulting in contrasting results. Three main steps, prescription, patient acceptance, and continuous monitoring, should be considered in improving appropriateness. The appropriateness support also depends on the specific care setting and available resources.

Summary: This study found that symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection in residents of long-term care facilities can appear individually or in clusters, and are associated with the mortality rate. Delirium, fever, and low-grade fever are important indicators for identifying and predicting the prognosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection in older LTCF patients.
