We present sensitive and high angular resolution CO(1-0) data obtained by the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy observations toward the nearby grand-design spiral galaxy M51. The angular resolution of 0 ''.7 corresponds to 30 pc, which is similar to the typical size of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), and the sensitivity is also high enough to detect typical GMCs. Within the 1' field of view centered on a spiral arm, a number of GMC-scale structures are detected as clumps. However, only a few clumps are found to be associated with each giant molecular association (GMA) and more than 90% of the total flux is resolved out in our data. Considering the high sensitivity and resolution of our data, these results indicate that GMAs are not mere confusion with GMCs but plausibly smooth structures. In addition, we have found that the most massive clumps are located downstream of the spiral arm, which suggests that they are at a later stage of molecular cloud evolution across the arm and plausibly are cores of GMAs. By comparing with II alpha and Pa alpha images, most of these cores are found to have nearby star-forming regions. We thus propose an evolutionary scenario for the interstellar medium, in which smaller molecular clouds collide to form smooth GMAs at spiral arm regions and then star formation is triggered in the GMA cores. Our new CO data have revealed the internal structure of GMAs at GMC scales, finding the most massive substructures on the downstream side of the arm in close association with the brightest HII regions.

The Nuclear Region of NGC 1365: Star Formation, Negative Feedback, and Outflow Structure

Yulong Gao, Fumi Egusa, Guilin Liu, Kotaro Kohno, Min Bao, Kana Morokuma-Matsui, Xu Kong, Xiaoyang Chen

Summary: High-resolution observations of ionized and molecular gas in the nuclear regions of galaxies are crucial for understanding the interplay of various processes such as star formation, gaseous inflows, stellar radiation, and feedback. The study reveals a superlinear Kennicutt-Schmidt law in the central region of NGC 1365, suggesting a steeper slope than previous observations. Furthermore, the presence of noncircular motion components in molecular and ionized hydrogen gas indicates potential interactions between central AGN activity and the surrounding gas distribution.

Instability analysis for spiral arms of local galaxies: M51, NGC 3627, and NGC 628

Summary: The study investigates the dynamical states of grand-design spiral arms in three local galaxies and finds them to be marginally stable, suggesting they will not fragment. Molecular gas is the dominant component determining the stability of the arms, emphasizing the importance of precise conversion factors for accurate analysis.

Central concentration of warm and dense molecular gas in a strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy at z=6

Akiyoshi Tsujita, Ken-ichi Tadaki, Kotaro Kohno, Bunyo Hatsukade, Fumi Egusa, Yoichi Tamura, Yuri Nishimura, Jorge Zavala, Toshiki Saito, Hideki Umehata, Minju M. Lee

Summary: We report the detection of CO(12-11) line emission in the strongly-lensed submillimeter galaxy G09-83808 at z = 6.02. Further analysis of other detected emissions and dust continuum reveals the physical properties of the interstellar medium. The compact emission region of CO(12-11) is found to coincide with the dust continuum, indicating the concentration of warm and dense molecular gas in the central region.

Statistical Study of the Star Formation Efficiency in Bars: Is Star Formation Suppressed in Gas-rich Bars?

Summary: The dependence of star formation efficiency (SFE) on galactic structures, especially in the bar region, is debated. This study reports the SFEs in 18 nearby gas-rich barred galaxies with large apparent bar major axes. The SFE in the bar region is found to be lower than in other regions, contrary to previous studies. The low SFE in the bar region may be attributed to the noncircular motion of the bar causing large dynamical effects.

Summary: In this study, we conducted a CO mapping survey of 64 galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Morita array. We found that the low star formation activity in these galaxies is due to a decrease in the cold gas mass fraction rather than a decrease in the star formation efficiency. Our comparison of the cold gas properties with the environmental properties suggests that the atomic gas is stripped tidally and by ram pressure, leading to a depletion of molecular gas and suppression of star formation.

Massive Molecular Gas Companions Uncovered by Very Large Array CO(1-0) Observations of the z=5.2 Radio Galaxy TN J0924-2201

Summary: We observed the redshifted CO(1-0) line emission towards the radio galaxy TN J0924-2201 at z = 5.2 using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array K-band. The emission was resolved into three clumps located off-center and 12-33 kpc away from the host galaxy's center. We estimated the infrared luminosity (LIR) and the star formation rate (SFR) of the host galaxy to be (9.3 +/- 1.7) x 10(11)L(circle dot) and 110 +/- 20 M-circle dot yr(-1), respectively. The three clumps indicate the presence of three massive molecular gas reservoirs. The nearest clump is apparently aligned with the radio jet axis, suggesting a radio-CO alignment and potential outflows, mergers, or jet-induced metal enrichment.

CO Excitation and its Connection to Star Formation at 200 pc in NGC 1365

Summary: This study presents high-resolution mappings of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission lines. The results show that both lines trace similar components of molecular gas, with the ratio of their integrated intensities reflecting the gas density and/or temperature. The study also finds a positive correlation between the ratios and a star formation rate indicator, indicating that molecular gas associated with recent star formation is denser and/or warmer.
