Periodic morphological changes in the radio structure of the gamma-ray binary LS 5039

Context. Gamma-ray binaries allow us to study physical processes such as particle acceleration up to TeV energies as well as very high energy gamma-ray emission and absorption with changing geometrical configurations on a periodic basis. These sources produce outflows of radio-emitting particles whose structure can be imaged with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). LS 5039 is a gamma-ray binary that has shown variable VLBI structures in the past. Aims. We aim to characterise the radio morphological changes of LS 5039 and determine if they are either repeatable or erratic. Methods. We observed LS 5039 with the VLBA at 5 GHz during five consecutive days to cover the 3.9-day orbit and an extra day to distinguish between orbital or secular variability. We also compiled the available high-resolution radio observations of the source to study its morphological variability at different orbital phases. We used a simple model to interpret the obtained images. Results. The new observations show that the morphology of LS 5039 up to projected distances of 10 milliarcsec changes within 24 h. The observed radio morphological changes display a periodic orbital modulation. Multifrequency and multiepoch VLBI observations confirm that the morphological periodicity is stable on timescales of years. Using a simple model we show that the observed behaviour is compatible with the presence of a young non-accreting pulsar with an outflow behind it. The morphology is reproduced for inclinations of the orbit of 60-75 degrees. For masses of the companion star in the range 20-50 M-circle dot, this range of inclinations implies a mass of the compact object of 1.3-2.7 M-circle dot. Conclusions. The periodic orbital modulation of the radio morphology of LS 5039, stable over several years, suggests that all gamma-ray binaries are expected to show a similar behaviour. The changes in the radio structure of LS 5039 are compatible with the presence of a young non-accreting neutron star, which suggests that the known gamma-ray binaries contain young pulsars.

Summary: This study presents the first high-resolution imaging of the radio lobes of Hercules A at low frequencies using the International LOFAR Telescope and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. The origin of the ring structures within the lobes is explored, and the spectral shape of the rings is found to be consistent with synchrotron aging, supporting an inner-lobe model where the rings are formed from the deposition of material from past periods of intermittent core activity.

Summary: This study presents a resolved study of the radio galaxy 3C 293 using the International LOFAR telescope and other data. It discovers the presence of restarted activity and multiple epochs of activity. It is the first study to simultaneously investigate a young source and older outer lobes at such low frequencies.

Pushing sub-arcsecond resolution imaging down to 30 MHz with the trans-European International LOFAR Telescope

Summary: Relatively little information is available about the Universe at ultra-low radio frequencies (ULF; i.e., below 50 MHz), although the ULF spectral window contains a wealth of unique diagnostics for studying galactic and extragalactic phenomena. We have conducted a pilot project using the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) and successfully produced subarcsecond resolution images for six radio sources at frequencies down to 30 MHz. This demonstrates the feasibility of subarcsecond imaging with ILT at low frequencies, but further analysis is needed for observing fainter or less compact sources.

Summary: Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies are excellent targets for searching for dark matter signals. The MAGIC telescopes have conducted observations on various dSphs and obtained stringent upper limits on the WIMP annihilation cross-section. This work presents the analysis of data from Draco dSph and Coma Berenices dSph, and combines the data from all dSphs to improve the search sensitivity.

Summary: Classical novae are binary star systems where material from a companion star is accreted onto a white dwarf, leading to a thermonuclear explosion and the ejection of accumulated matter. In this study, the detection of gamma rays from the 2021 outburst of RS Ophiuchi allowed for a better understanding of the acceleration of protons to high energies and the creation of cosmic ray bubbles.

Summary: We report a long-lasting elevated gamma-ray flux state from VER J0521+211 observed by VERITAS, MAGIC, and Fermi-LAT in 2013 and 2014. The peak integral flux above 200 GeV measured with nightly binned light curve is (8.8 +/- 0.4) x 10(-7) photons m(-2) s(-1), which is approximately 37% of the Crab Nebula flux. X-ray, UV, and optical instruments also observed this phenomenon. A moderate correlation was observed between the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes, and the X-ray spectrum became harder when the flux increased. Through the gamma-ray spectrum and four models of the extragalactic background light (EBL), a conservative 95% confidence upper limit on the redshift of the source was found to be z <= 0.31. Unlike the gamma-ray and X-ray bands, the optical flux did not significantly increase during the study period compared to the archival low-state flux. The spectral variability from the optical to X-ray bands suggests that the synchrotron peak of the spectral energy distribution (SED) may become broader during flaring states, which can be adequately described with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model varying the high-energy end of the underlying particle spectrum. The synchrotron peak frequency of the SED and the radio morphology of the jet from the MOJAVE program are consistent with the source being an intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lac object.

Disturbed, diffuse, or just missing? A global study of the H I content of Hickson compact groups

Summary: Hickson compact groups (HCGs) follow an evolutionary sequence of three phases, with gas initially confined to galaxies, then spread throughout the intra-group medium, and finally almost no gas remaining in the galaxies. This study finds that the deficiency of H I can be used as a proxy for the evolutionary phase of a compact group, and there is evidence for the existence of diffuse H I component in HCGs. Moreover, the distribution of H I deficiency in HCGs is broad, and the timescale for morphological changes is generally shorter than the timescale for the destruction or consumption of neutral gas.

Summary: The SKA Pathfinder Radio Continuum Surveys (SPARCS) use high sensitivity and high resolution imaging to characterize the contribution of active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star formation (SF) emissions in faint extragalactic radio sources. By analyzing data from a deep wide-field survey at 1.6 GHz, it is observed that sources at spatial scales of 9 pc show little to no jet structure, while at 0.3 kpc, one-sided and two-sided radio jets begin to emerge, indicating a possible transition from pure AGN emissions to AGN and SF systems.

Hints of the photometric period in radial velocity data of the X-ray binary HD 3191 with the Joan Oro telescope

Summary: We focused on investigating the X-ray binary system HD 3191, whose nature and orbital parameters have not been dynamically confirmed. The positional agreement between HD 3191 and a flaring gamma-ray source was the initial motivation for this study, although the likelihood of association has since decreased. Using the Joan Oro telescope at the Observatori Astronomic del Montsec, we conducted long-term spectroscopic monitoring and found that the Doppler measurements confirmed the previously reported 16.09-day photometric period. Our preliminary radial velocity curve suggests a low velocity amplitude, but further improved spectroscopic observations are needed to better understand the nature of the compact companion.

Summary: Through the study of SN 2020eyj, we discovered a type Ia supernova with helium-rich circumstellar material. Based on our modeling, we conclude that this circumstellar material likely originates from a single-degenerate binary system, which is a frequently proposed formation channel.

Summary: Linelike features in TeV gamma rays are searched for in the Galactic Center region using ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. No linelike spectral feature is found in the analysis. The cross section for dark matter annihilation into two photons is constrained to be less than or similar to 5 x 10-28 cm3 s-1 at 1 TeV and less than or similar to 1 x 10-25 cm3 s-1 at 100 TeV, providing the best constraints to date for dark matter with mass above 20 TeV and a cuspy dark matter profile at the Galactic Center. Constraints on supersymmetric wino models are also obtained using the derived limits for both cuspy and cored dark matter profiles.
