Context. The Cassini probe regularly passes in the vicinity of Titan, revealing new insights into particle precipitation thanks to the electron and proton spectrometer. Moreover, the Huygens probe has revealed an ionized layer at 65 km induced by cosmic rays. The impact of these different particles on the chemistry of Titan is probably very strong. Aims. In this article, we compute the whole ionization in the atmosphere of Titan: from the cosmic rays near the ground to the EUV in the upper atmosphere. The meteoritic layer is not taken into account. Methods. We used the transTitan model to compute the electron and EUV impact, and the planetocosmics code to compute the influence of protons and oxygen ions. We coupled the two models to study the influence of the secondary electrons obtained by planetocosmics through the transTitan code. The resulting model improves the accuracy of the calculation through the transport of electrons in the atmosphere. Results. The whole ionization is computed and studied in details. During the day, the cosmic ray ionization peak is as strong as the UV-EUV one. Electrons and protons are very important depending the precipitation conditions. Protons can create a layer at 500 km, while electrons tend to ionize near 800 km. The oxygen ion impact is near 900 km. The results shows few differences to precedent models for the nightside T5 fly-by of Cassini, and can highlight the sources of the different ion layers detected by radio measurements. Conclusions. The new model successfully computes the ion production in the atmosphere of Titan. For the first time, a full electron and ion profile has been computed from 0 to 1600 km, which compares qualitatively with measurements. This result can be used by chemical models.

Summary: This study investigates the radiation environment induced by galactic and solar radiation at Oxia Planum and Mawrth Vallis on Mars, revealing similar conditions at different sites during solar minimum and maximum, with slightly enhanced gamma-ray contribution in water-rich regolith. The exposure estimates for different locations show reasonable to large safety margins for long stays and low risk for short stays, with the influence of ground composition on radiation levels highlighted.

Case study of stratospheric intrusion above Hampton, Virginia: Lidar-observation and modeling analysis

Summary: A study detected a stratospheric intrusion event above Hampton, Virginia using NASA's LMOL and MPL instruments, with the GEOS-CF model confirming the stratospheric origin of the air mass. The research showed that particulate observations could potentially be used as a signature of stratospheric intrusions and that the LMOL system has the capability to detect such events.

Summary: This study focused on the vertical distribution of ozone in the troposphere near central Long Island, highlighting the importance of measuring ozone aloft for a comprehensive understanding of ozone production and transport. Analysis revealed that high ozone levels in the lower troposphere are often observed on hot, sunny days with high-pressure systems, leading to the presence of distinct layers with significant ozone excursions over short vertical distances. Meteorological processes at both synoptic and local scales were found to play a crucial role in shaping the observed vertical ozone profiles.

Cluster-based characterization of multi-dimensional tropospheric ozone variability in coastal regions: an analysis of lidar measurements and model results

Summary: This study uses multi-dimensional measurements from ozone lidar, along with two different chemical transport models (CTMs), to investigate the vertical and temporal variability of coastal ozone. Clustering analysis results in five different ozone profile curtain clusters, which are used to evaluate the performance of the CTMs. Overall evaluation shows good agreement in the low-level altitude range, but significant differences at mid-level altitudes.

Summary: Aerosols emitted from wildfires are a major source of poor air quality in the US mainland, but are difficult to monitor accurately using lidar techniques. This study improved the characterization of lidar ratios for UVB aerosol retrieval and evaluated the optical properties of aerosols affected by wildfire emissions in the lower troposphere. The research enables better monitoring and correction of aerosol impact on O-3 lidar data.

Summary: A novel three-wavelength DIAL technique is proposed for more accurate measurements of NO2 with lower retrieval uncertainties compared to the traditional two-wavelength method. The study indicates that the three-wavelength DIAL technique can reduce fluctuations caused by aerosol backscattering. Additionally, NO2 profiles retrieved using this technique show similar vertical structures and magnitudes to modeled profiles.
