The objective of this experiment was to determine the concentration and digestibility of crude protein (CP) and amino acid (AA) in meat meal (MM), and to compare these values with the respective values in soybean meal (SBM). Six barrows (initial body weight = 66.9 +/- 3.8 kg) surgically fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum were allotted to a replicated 3x3 balanced Latin square design with 3 diets and 3 periods. Two experimental diets containing test ingredients as the sole source of AA were prepared to estimate the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) for CP and AA by the direct method. An N-free diet was also prepared to estimate basal endogenous losses of CP and AA. All experimental diets contained 5% chromic oxide as an indigestible index. Each period consisted of a 5-d adaptation period and a 2-d of ileal digesta collection period. Heal digesta samples were collected from 0900 to 1700 on d 6 and 7 of each period. The concentrations of CP, Lys, Met, and Trp in MM and SBM were analyzed to be 64.1, 3.5, 1.1 and 0.6, and 45.6, 2.8, 0.8, and 0.3%, respectively. The AID of all AA except Gly in MM was less (p<0.05) than in SBM. The AID of Lys, Met, and Trp in MM was estimated to be 56.0, 71.7, and 47.1%, respectively. The SID of all AA in MM was less (p<0.05) than in SBM. The SID of Lys, Met, and Trp was 65.1, 79.2, and 78.5%, respectively. In conclusion, the CP and AA contents in MM were greater than those in SBM whereas the ileal digestibility of all AA in MM was less than in SBM.

Summary: In this study, the regulatory effects of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei NSMJ56 on gut immunity and microbiome in early-age broiler chickens were investigated. The results suggest that NSMJ56 supplementation has modulatory effects on gut immunity and microbiome, which are crucial for the growth performance and overall health status of broiler chickens.

Effects of Different Feeding Durations on Ileum Length and Weight and Basal Endogenous Loss of Phosphorus in Broiler Chickens Fed a Phosphorus-Free Diet

Su Hyun An, Changsu Kong

Summary: The study investigated the effects of feeding duration on the length and weight of the ileum, and basal endogenous loss (BEL) of phosphorus (P) in broiler chickens fed a P-free diet (PFD). Results showed that increasing the PFD feeding duration from 2 to 4 days led to improved growth performance and a decrease in the relative dry weight of the ileum. However, the amount of dried ileal digesta was not affected. The BEL of P was 110.2, 128.2, and 133.6 mg/kg of dry matter intake in birds fed the PFD for 2, 3, and 4 days, respectively. Feeding a PFD to broiler chickens for 2, 3, or 4 days did not change P BEL.

Effects of Mycotoxin-Sequestering Agents on Growth Performance and Nutrient Utilization of Growing Pigs Fed Deoxynivalenol-Contaminated Diets

Summary: The effects of supplemental mycotoxin-sequestering agents on the growth performance and nutrient utilization in growing pigs fed deoxynivalenol (DON)-contaminated diets were investigated in this study. The results showed that bentonite and yeast cell wall did not affect the growth performance of pigs, while a mixed product consisting of enzymes, microorganisms, minerals, and plant extracts partially alleviated the negative effects of dietary DON on the gain:feed ratio in pigs. Supplemental yeast cell wall decreased the calcium digestibility in pigs fed DON-contaminated diets, which needs to be considered in diet formulations.

Standardized ileal digestible lysine requirements based on growth performance and histochemical characteristics of male broilers from 10 to 21 d of age

Summary: The growth performance and histochemical characteristics of breast muscle fibers were used to estimate the standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys requirements for 10- to 21-d-old male broilers. An increase in dietary SID Lys from 0.86% to 1.36% resulted in a quadratic increase in body weight gain, gain to feed ratio, breast weight, muscle cross-sectional area, and fiber area. The estimated SID Lys requirements ranged from 1.01% to 1.29% depending on the response variables used for estimation, and histochemical characteristics of breast muscle fibers could be good indicators for estimating SID Lys requirements.

Summary: Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of bird age and feed ingredients on the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) in corn and soybean meal (SBM). The findings showed that the digestibility of AA increased with increasing bird age, and the digestibility of AA in SBM was higher than in corn.
