Summary: Pigs are highly susceptible to heat stress and betaine and zinc have been used as nutritional mitigation strategies. This study found that betaine and zinc modified hindgut fermentation in heat-stressed pigs, increasing acetate and butyrate production. The abundance of certain bacterial groups was also affected. Further research is needed to confirm these results under in vivo conditions.

Summary: Resveratrol was found to have a protective effect in duck jejunum exposed to acute heat stress, as it increased villus height to crypt depth ratio, number of goblet cells, and reduced histopathological damage. Moreover, resveratrol activated the SIRT1 signaling pathway to alleviate oxidative damage and inflammation injury induced by heat stress.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of supplemental zinc and betaine on the meat quality and redox status of heat-stressed pigs. Results showed that the zinc diet improved water retention capacity, antioxidant properties, and glutathione peroxidase activity of the muscles, while the betaine diet had no significant effects. These findings suggest that zinc supplementation can be used to improve the antioxidant properties of meat in heat-stressed Iberian pigs.

Summary: Zinc supplementation was found to reduce cell membrane damage, alleviate oxidative stress, promote antioxidant enzyme activity, and protect intestinal barrier function under heat stress conditions, which may be a beneficial nutritional strategy against intestinal damage caused by high temperatures.

Summary: Heat stress can cause intestinal inflammation, impaired barrier integrity, and decreased immunity in poultry. Zinc has been shown to mitigate the adverse effects of heat stress, but the effects of different sources and levels of zinc supplementation on the heat stress capacity of Chinese landraces remained unclear. This study investigated the effects of zinc sulfate (ZnS) and zinc proteinate with moderate chelation strength (Zn-Prot M) on the intestinal immune function of Xueshan chickens, an important local breed in China. The results showed that both ZnS and Zn-Prot M can effectively reduce IL-6 secretion in the serum, with 60 mg/kg being the optimal dose. Zn-Prot M was superior to ZnS in improving intestinal immunity, and 60 mg/kg was the optimal addition dose.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of vitamin E and selenium supplementation on broilers exposed to elevated temperature. The results showed that vitamin E and selenium supplementation improved antioxidant status, regulated cytokine responses, and modified the ileal microbiota.

Summary: This study demonstrates that prolonged high-intensity interval and moderate-intensity continuous treadmill exercise in the heat can affect enterocyte injury and bacterial endotoxin translocation, with interval exercise potentially increasing the risk of endotoxin translocation.

Summary: Dr. Bruce Ames pioneered the understanding of oxidative stress, DNA damage, and the connection between micronutrient deficiencies and DNA damage. Zinc is essential for human health, playing a critical role in cellular antioxidant defense, DNA integrity, and immune function. Studies have shown that zinc deficiency is associated with oxidative stress, susceptibility to DNA damage, and chronic inflammation, emphasizing the importance of adequate nutrition for healthy aging.

Summary: Heat stress poses a significant threat to pigs by negatively affecting their intestinal integrity and function, including morphology, histology, and barrier function. Supplementation of dietary antioxidants can mitigate these adverse effects and maintain the normal function of the intestine.

Summary: The study shows that heat stress increases autophagy induction in oocytes during in vitro maturation (IVM), and artificially inducing autophagy can enhance oocyte maturation rate during IVM. These findings suggest that autophagy is a potential mechanism activated in oocytes during heat stress to recycle damaged cellular components and maintain developmental competence.

Summary: Essential oils have a positive impact on broiler chicken performance, intestinal integrity, bone mineralization, and meat quality during cyclic heat stress. Supplementing the diets with essential oils improves body weight, bone density, and intestinal morphology while providing better meat quality. Therefore, the use of essential oils in antibiotic-free production is important, especially in harsh climates.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of heat stress and feed intake on broiler chickens. The results show that the negative impact of heat stress on gut integrity, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, and meat yield are independent of reduced feed intake. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms.
