Objective: To analyze drug prescriptions for insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients seen in the Brazilian Public Healthcare System (Unified Health System - SUS) in Ribeirao Preto, SP, Brazil. Subjects and methods: All the patients with diabetes seen in the SUS in the western district of Ribeirao Preto, SP, Brazil between March/2006 and February/2007 were included in the study. Results: A total of 3,982 patients were identified. Mean age of the patients was 60.6 years, and 61.0% were females. Sixty percent of the patients were treated with monotherapy. Doses of oral antidiabetic drugs were lower in monotherapy than in polytherapy. Ten patients received doses of glibenclamide or metformin above the recommended maximum doses, and in elderly patients there was no reduction in drug doses. Conclusion: Monotherapy with oral antidiabetic drugs was the predominant procedure, and the doses were not individualized according to age. Arq Bras Endocrinol Metab. 2012;56(2):120-7

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether Pharmaceutical Care (PC) in a geriatric ward in Brazil improves the safety of pharmacotherapy in older individuals. The results showed that polypharmacy and multiple diseases were associated with increased adverse drug events and medication errors. However, implementing PC can reduce unnecessary polypharmacy and contribute to the deprescribing of medications at hospital discharge.

Marcela Z. Campanini, Alberto D. Gonzalez, Selma M. Andrade, Edmarlon Girotto, Marcos A. S. Cabrera, Camilo M. Guidoni, Paula C. A. Araujo, Arthur E. Mesas

Summary: This study found a bidirectional association between poor sleep quality and chronic low back pain (cLBP). Changes in sleep quality over time were associated with an increased likelihood of cLBP, and baseline cLBP was associated with worsened sleep quality. Mental health conditions played a significant confounding role in the relationship between sleep and cLBP.

An analysis of pharmaceutical care for critical patients of an adult Intensive Care Unit

Mauricio Fabio Gomes, Camilo Molino Guidoni

Summary: This study analyzed the pharmacotherapeutic problems identified by clinical pharmacists in an ICU and the acceptance of pharmaceutical interventions for solving these problems. The results showed that the majority of the problems were classified as unnecessary drug treatment, with excessive drug administration as the main cause, particularly related to antimicrobials. 350 pharmaceutical interventions were performed, mostly consisting of informing the prescribers and having a high acceptability rate. In conclusion, clinical pharmacy activities in the ICU can identify, prevent, and correct pharmacotherapeutic problems, contributing to the optimization of pharmacotherapy in terms of need, efficacy, and safety.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and depressive symptoms in Chilean university students. The study found that students with moderate and high adherence to the Mediterranean diet had a lower likelihood of depression. In addition, the consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, avocado, fish, and seafood was also associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms.

Summary: This study proposes and evaluates the test-retest reliability of indicators of the correct use of sodium alendronate in elderly patients. Data collection was performed through questionnaires in face-to-face in-home interviews. The reliability of the questions was evaluated using agreement percentage and Kappa coefficient. The results suggest that the proposed questions have adequate reliability and can be used as a simple and quick way to evaluate the quality of sodium alendronate use among the elderly.

Fernanda Vicioni-Marques, Francisco Wanderley Garcia de Paula-Silva, Milena Rodrigues Carvalho, Alexandra Mussolino de Queiroz, Osvaldo de Freitas, Maira Peres Ferreira Duarte, David John Manton, Fabricio Kitazono de Carvalho

Summary: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is often accompanied by dental hypersensitivity and difficulty in achieving effective analgesia. This study evaluated the effectiveness of preemptive analgesia in children with severe MIH, post-eruptive enamel breakdown, and hypersensitivity. The results showed that preemptive analgesia improved the effectiveness of infiltrative anesthesia and patient comfort during restorative procedures.

A novel substitution in NS5A enhances the resistance of hepatitis C virus genotype 3 to daclatasvir

Guilherme Rodrigues Fernandes Campos, Joseph Ward, Shucheng Chen, Cintia Bittar, Joao Paulo Vilela Rodrigues, Ana de Lourdes Candolo Martinelli, Fernanda Fernandes Souza, Leonardo Regis Leira Pereira, Paula Rahal, Mark Harris

Summary: Hepatitis C virus genotype 3 shows a high level of baseline and acquired resistance to direct-acting antivirals, particularly those targeting the NS5A protein. A study on Brazilian patients treated with NS5A DAA daclatasvir and nucleoside analogue sofosbuvir revealed a novel substitution at NS5A amino acid residue 98, indicating a potential mechanism for high DAA resistance.
