Summary: The uptake of new glucose-lowering medications among patients with type 2 diabetes in Australia, Canada, England, and Scotland was analyzed. The study found that new drugs are displacing sulfonylureas and combinations of metformin and new drug classes are increasing. Despite evidence of better outcomes, the adoption of SGLT2 inhibitors lagged behind DPP4 inhibitors.

Summary: From 2008 to 2018, global consumption of Lipid-modifying agents, particularly statins, has increased. While the relationship between LMA consumption and cholesterol concentrations remains unclear, the trends in LMA use globally align with international lipid guidelines and show an increase in consumption of low-density lipoprotein lowering therapies. Country-level patterns of LMA use and total and non-HDL cholesterol varied considerably.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate potential drug-drug interactions and their associated adverse outcomes in Danish hospital prescriptions, and identify patient types that are more affected. The results showed that certain drug combinations may lead to adverse outcomes, including increased mortality rates. Therefore, caution should be exercised to avoid these unsafe drug combinations during prescribing.

Summary: In the study, the use of repurposed drug candidates in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) was investigated by mining electronic health record data. The analysis of claims from members with commercial health insurance coverage revealed correlations between the use of certain drugs and AD incidence and claim frequency. Medications for psychotic and mental illnesses were associated with higher disease incidence and frequency, while antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs were associated with lower AD incidence rates to some extent. These observations provide insights into the prescription and claim relationships between different drug types and Alzheimer's disease.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis is a challenging chronic inflammatory skin disease. The addition of green propolis to cold cream has the potential to help alleviate AD symptoms without changing the cream's properties. Preclinical study indicated that both propolis-loaded cold cream and blank cold cream improved patients' quality of life, but propolis-loaded cream showed better effectiveness in reducing disease severity.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether Pharmaceutical Care (PC) in a geriatric ward in Brazil improves the safety of pharmacotherapy in older individuals. The results showed that polypharmacy and multiple diseases were associated with increased adverse drug events and medication errors. However, implementing PC can reduce unnecessary polypharmacy and contribute to the deprescribing of medications at hospital discharge.

Summary: This study found a bidirectional association between poor sleep quality and chronic low back pain (cLBP). Changes in sleep quality over time were associated with an increased likelihood of cLBP, and baseline cLBP was associated with worsened sleep quality. Summary: This study analyzed the pharmacotherapeutic problems identified by clinical pharmacists in an ICU and the acceptance of pharmaceutical interventions for solving these problems. The results showed that the majority of the problems were classified as unnecessary drug treatment, with excessive drug administration as the main cause, particularly related to antimicrobials. 350 pharmaceutical interventions were performed, mostly consisting of informing the prescribers and having a high acceptability rate. In conclusion, clinical pharmacy activities in the ICU can identify, prevent, and correct pharmacotherapeutic problems, contributing to the optimization of pharmacotherapy in terms of need, efficacy, and safety.

Summary: This study proposes and evaluates the test-retest reliability of indicators of the correct use of sodium alendronate in elderly patients. Data collection was performed through questionnaires in face-to-face in-home interviews. The reliability of the questions was evaluated using agreement percentage and Kappa coefficient. The results suggest that the proposed questions have adequate reliability and can be used as a simple and quick way to evaluate the quality of sodium alendronate use among the elderly.

Summary: Hepatitis C virus genotype 3 shows a high level of baseline and acquired resistance to direct-acting antivirals, particularly those targeting the NS5A protein. A study on Brazilian patients treated with NS5A DAA daclatasvir and nucleoside analogue sofosbuvir revealed a novel substitution at NS5A amino acid residue 98, indicating a potential mechanism for high DAA resistance.
