This study explores the relations of anthropometric, body composition assessments, biochemical and hemodynamic parameters with insulin resistance in two rural communities. Sample was composed by adults aged 18 or older, both sexes. Participants were excluded if pregnant and diabetic. Data collection included demographic lifestyle, hemodynamic, anthropometric and biochemical variables. From the 567 subjects, 50.4% were men and 49.6%, women. Most of the sample was non-white (75.7%), lived with partner (69.3%) and had low educational level. Overweight and obesity prevalences were 17.4% and 5.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis found risk factors associated to insulin resistance for non-diabetic adults with low income and educational level: overweight, obesity, elevated waist-to-hip ratio, C-reactive protein and skin color. Taiane Goncalves Novaes, Larissa Loures Mendes, Luciene Fatima Fernandes Almeida, Andreia Queiroz Ribeiro, Bruna Vieira de Lima Costa, Rafael Moreira Claro, Milene Cristine Pessoa

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the availability of food stores in school territories. The results showed that unhealthy stores were the most common and closest to the schools. There were more stores around private schools, located in the central region and with higher per capita income. Additionally, there was evidence of clustering of stores, with up to 3 times more establishments than expected if they were randomly distributed. Therefore, schoolchildren were likely exposed to unhealthy food environments, which may contribute to inadequate food choices.

Thales Philipe Rodrigues da Silva, Thamara Gabriela Fernandes Viana, Camila Kuemmel Duarte, Monique Louise Cassimiro Inacio, Gustavo Velasquez-Melendez, Milene Cristine Pessoa, Larissa Loures Mendes, Fernanda Penido Matozinhos

Summary: This study systematically examined the scientific evidence linking environmental factors (environment, social environment, environmental planning, and spatial population distribution) to excessive gestational weight gain. A meta-analysis and systematic review were conducted following recommended guidelines. The findings revealed a correlation between residing in high-poverty neighborhoods and inadequate gestational weight gain. Pregnant women living in urban areas were also found to have a higher prevalence of excessive gestational weight gain. These results suggest the importance of considering environmental factors in preventing inadequate gestational weight gain.

Summary: This study investigated the food environment and availability of foods in areas with and without Food and Nutrition Public Establishments (FNPE). The findings showed that the availability and variety of fruits and vegetables were higher in areas with FNPE, while convenience stores/bakeries had higher availability of ultra-processed foods. However, the Healthy Food Store Index (HFSI) did not differ between the two areas, indicating a low impact of FNPE on food marketing dynamics.
