Summary: The study found that implementing a care bundle in patients undergoing craniotomy can effectively prevent surgical site infections, especially infections after craniotomy. This comprehensive preventive strategy significantly reduces the incidence of infections and should be considered for implementation in centers with high infection risk.

Summary: This study assessed compliance with an SSI intervention bundle and examined readmission rates for SSI in women undergoing cesarean section. The results showed that good compliance with the intervention bundle led to a reduction in admission rates for SSI. However, this trend may be influenced by the increasing number of women with high BMI.

Summary: The implementation of surgical site infection reduction bundles plays an important role in reducing surgical site infections, but different bundle elements have varying associations with infection reduction. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the specific elements that have an impact on infection reduction during the implementation process.

Summary: This quality improvement study suggests that implementing a surgical site infection prevention bundle may be associated with decreased Staphylococcus aureus deep incisional or organ space surgical site infections after total joint arthroplasty. However, further research is needed to investigate this association outside of randomized trial settings.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of oral antibiotics and intravenous antibiotics in preventing Surgical Site Infections (SSI) in elective colorectal surgery, with results showing a lower rate of SSI in the oral antibiotic group. Oral Neomycin/Bacitracin and intravenous beta-lactam/beta-lactamases inhibitors seem to reduce the occurrence of SSI. Further investigation is needed to determine the role of mechanical bowel preparation.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic evaluation to assess the efficacy of chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine as primary components in preventing surgical site infection (SSI). The meta-analysis results indicated that chlorhexidine was more effective than povidone-iodine in reducing the incidence of surgical site wound infections, superficial SSIs, and deep SSIs.

Summary: The association between bactibilia and postoperative complications in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy is influenced by perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis. The presence of cefoxitin-resistant organisms in bile cultures is associated with increased risk of surgical site infection and clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the noninferiority of medical masks compared to N95 respirators in preventing COVID-19 among healthcare workers. The results showed that there was little difference in the occurrence of RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 between the medical mask group and the N95 respirator group. The subgroup analysis by country yielded varied results.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of chlorhexidine in alcohol, povidone-iodine in alcohol, and povidone-iodine in aqueous solution for preventing surgical site infection in colorectal surgery. The results showed no difference in surgical site infection, complications, or length of stay among the three skin preparation methods.

Summary: Laparoscopy and antibiotic-first strategies are commonly used for acute appendicitis in developed countries but not in low-income nations like Guatemala. Differences in pre-operative imaging, surgical approach, type of anesthesia, and non-operative management were observed between a hospital in Guatemala and a medical center in the USA.

Summary: The VASQIP risk calculator showed poor accuracy in predicting short-term outcomes for octogenarians and nonagenarians undergoing major LEA. Most octogenarian and nonagenarian veterans died within 1 year, with nonagenarians having a mean survival of less than 3 months after LEA. The decision for major LEA in octogenarian and nonagenarian veterans should involve an informed discussion with the patient and family.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of obesity on morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing above knee amputation. The results showed that obese patients had higher rates of blood loss anemia, superficial surgical site infection, and acute kidney injury. They also had higher mortality rates, longer hospital stays, and higher medical costs.

Summary: The study compared the outcomes of robotic and laparoscopic cholecystectomy, showing the advantages of robotic surgery but limited by OR time and cost. Patients with similar comorbidity rates undergoing robotic cholecystectomy experienced equivalent OR time and complications compared to conventional laparoscopy.
