Objective: To determine patient-perceived voice-related quality of life in patients treated with various methods based on the results of Voice-Related Quality of Life (VRQOL) and Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) questionnaires. Design: The VRQOL and VHI-10 questionnaires. Setting: University hospital. Patients: One hundred thirty-seven patients who had received definitive treatment of laryngeal cancer were followed-up at Hokkaido University Hospital, Sapporo, Japan, and were alive with no evidence of malignancy at the time of the survey. Main Outcome Measure: Patient-perceived voice-related quality of life based on the results of the VRQOL and VHI-10 questionnaires. Results: The mean VRQOL scores for patients who had undergone radiotherapy (n=63), chemoradiotherapy (n=29), laser surgery (n=14), or total laryngectomy (n=27) as final treatment of laryngeal cancer were 92.6, 92.9, 85.5, and 68.4, respectively; the mean VHI-10 scores were 2.87, 2.34, 5.43, and 11.26, respectively. Conclusion: The VRQOL and VHI-10 questionnaires are important in judging the overall effectiveness of treatment options for laryngeal cancer.

Summary: The study developed new in vitro and in vivo models of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) using organoid culture and patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDX) techniques. Human ACC-derived organoids were successfully generated, providing insights into understanding the biology of ACC and creating personalized therapy design for patients.

The incidence of newly diagnosed secondary cancer; sub-analysis the prospective study of the second-look procedure for transoral surgery in patients with T1 and T2 head and neck cancer

Goshi Nishimura, Daisuke Sano, Yasuhiro Arai, Takashi Hatano, Hideaki Takahashi, Yosuke Kitani, Kentaro Takada, Takashi Wada, Nobuhiko Oridate

Summary: The study found a high incidence of secondary malignancies in early-stage head and neck cancer patients, especially in hypopharyngeal cancer. It is important to pay attention to and be aware of the incidence of secondary cancer during the follow-up period after controlling the early-stage disease.

Summary: High density of tumor CD163+ macrophages is associated with poor prognosis in regional control and disease-free survival. Patients with both high density of tumor CD163+ macrophages and intermediate- or high-grade budding score have a poor prognosis for regional control.

Summary: The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer is increasing due to its association with HPV, which can evade the immune system and integrate into the host genome, contributing to oncogenesis.

Summary: The study found that the size of the mastoid air cell system at age 3 is an important prognostic factor in children with early-onset otitis media with effusion (OME), and combining this with the duration of ventilation tube placement can better predict the prognosis.

FosL1 Regulates Regional Metastasis of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma by Promoting Cell Migration, Invasion, and Proliferation

Hiroshi Hyakusoku, Kae Sawakuma, Daisuke Sano, Hideaki Takahashi, Takashi Hatano, Kaname Sato, Yasuhiro Isono, Shoko Shimada, Kentaro Takada, Tatsu Kuwahara, Yoshihiro Aizawa, Nobuhiko Oridate

Summary: The study demonstrated that FosL1 plays a crucial role in promoting cell migration, invasion, and proliferation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Knockdown of FosL1 inhibited these processes and patients with higher expression of FosL1 had significantly shorter survival time.

Validation of the risk factors for primary control of early T-stage laryngeal, oropharyngeal, and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma by transoral surgery: a prospective observational study

Summary: Among patients with early-stage laryngeal, oropharyngeal, and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, primary control by transoral surgery alone may not be achieved in patients with both risk factors, namely tumor thickness > 7 mm on enhanced CT and poor differentiation on pathological examination.

Summary: This study examined the incidence and risk factors of severe anaphylaxis induced by intravenous chemotherapy in cancer patients. A total of 27 cases of severe anaphylaxis were observed among 5584 patients, with drugs like carboplatin and paclitaxel being the main culprits. The study highlighted the high-risk settings associated with these severe allergic reactions.

A risk factor for newly diagnosed secondary cancer in patients with early-stage laryngeal, oropharyngeal, or hypopharyngeal cancer: sub-analysis of a prospective observation study

Goshi Nishimura, Daisuke Sano, Yasuhiro Arai, Hideaki Takahashi, Takashi Hatano, Yosuke Kitani, Kentaro Takada, Takashi Wada, Yohei Hiiragi, Nobuhiko Oridate

Summary: Hypopharyngeal cancer patients treated with transoral surgery had a higher risk of newly diagnosed secondary cancers compared to patients with other cancers, with the risk being 3.60 times higher. The 3-year survival rates were high, but hypopharyngeal cancer patients were more likely to develop new secondary cancers during follow-up.

Summary: The laryngopharynx is a crucial area for swallowing, speech, and phonation, and a minimally invasive approach for the treatment of laryngopharyngeal cancer is necessary. Transoral surgery, including TOVS and ELPS, have been developed in Japan as minimally invasive methods for early stage pharyngeal and laryngeal cancers. TORS using the da Vinci Surgical System has been widely reported to provide surgeons with increased visualization and magnification, resulting in precise surgical margins and rapid functional recovery, showing positive treatment outcomes in Japan.

Summary: The study demonstrates that chemoradiotherapy with weekly cisplatin is noninferior to 3-weekly cisplatin in terms of overall survival for patients with postoperative high-risk locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Weekly cisplatin also leads to fewer adverse reactions compared to the 3-weekly regimen.

Summary: The study aims to investigate evaluation parameters useful for voice monitoring during type 2 thyroplasty (TP2) procedure for adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD) and determine the most appropriate method for selecting titanium bridge size. The results show that the parameters of voice evaluation and acoustic analysis have good consistency at different evaluation stages, indicating their effectiveness. In addition, the study finds that selected width of titanium bridge leads to better ratings compared to unselected width.
