The human vagina is a complex and dynamic ecosystem containing an abundance of microorganisms. In women of childbearing age, this system is dominated by Lactobacillus spp. In the present work, seventeen newly isolated vaginal strains were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing and were investigated for their antimicrobial properties. Twelve of the isolated Lactobacillus strains showed activity against one or more microorganisms. Six and five of them produced substances that inhibited the growth of two different Klebsiella strains and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Two lactobacilli strains were active against an Escherichia coli strain, one isolate was active against an Enterococus faecalis strain and another lactobacilli strain showed antimicrobial activity against a Candida parapsilosis strain. The nature of the active compounds was additionally studied, and the presence of bacteriocin-like substances was proved. The genes related to the bacteriocin production in three of the newly isolated strains were identified and sequenced. The presence of gassericin A operon in the genome of the species Lactobacillus crispatus was described for the first time. The presence of antimicrobial activity contributes to their possible use as potential probiotic strains after further research.

Summary: The study showed that inoculating certain non-Saccharomyces yeasts in wine can significantly increase GSH concentration, especially Metschnikowia spp. This strategy can serve as an alternative to pure GSH or inactivated dry yeasts, and help reduce the need for sulfur dioxide in wine production.

Summary: In this study, in silico analyses were conducted to explore AR genes in Leuconostoc genus, revealing 131 putative AR traits across 17 type strains and identifying the lsaA gene in certain strains for the first time. The distribution and potential roles of lsaA in different Leuconostoc nontype strains were discussed, along with assessment of MIC towards CLI and QUD, suggesting implications for antibiotic resistance and reassessment of resistance thresholds in certain species.

Summary: In a study on an infant diagnosed with PA through NBS, metronidazole treatment effectively reduced propionate-producing Bacteroides fragilis, while supplementation with bifidobacteria increased their population and improved microbial biodiversity. Metabarcoding analysis proved to be a useful tool for fast and cost-effective monitoring, offering potential for tailored microbiota modification treatment studies to enhance the quality of life for PA patients.

Summary: The study showed that Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IWBT B063 exhibited differential expression of 148 functionally annotated genes during growth in synthetic grape juice medium under different oxygen exposure conditions and low availability of nitrogen-based nutrients. These genes were mainly involved in carbohydrate metabolism, genetic information processing, and signaling and cellular processes, highlighting the potential adaptive capacity of this strain under stress conditions.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of grape washing, SO2 addition, and selected starter culture inoculation on population dynamics, fermentation kinetics, and main oenological parameters in lab-scale trials. The results showed that grape washing was effective in removing undesirable microorganisms, while inoculation of multi-starter cultures had a greater impact on fermentation rates.
