Women with previous gestational diabetes mellitus (pGDM) are at high risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. In this study, we aimed to compare plasma apelin levels between women with and without pGDM, and to investigate the possible association of apelin with cardiometabolic risk factors. Among 252 consecutive Caucasian women with GDM being included in a prospective postpartum follow-up protocol, 141 women eligible for the study protocol were enrolled. Control group consisted of 49 age- and body mass index-matched healthy women without pGDM. Circulating apelin, IL-6 and plasminogen activator inhibitor levels, and carotid intima media thickness (IMT) were measured. To evaluate carbohydrate intolerance, 75-g oral glucose tolerance test was performed. Fasting insulin and lipids were measured, and homeostasis model assessment index was calculated. Plasma apelin levels were reduced in women with pGDM (p < 0.001). In multiple regression analysis, apelin was negatively associated with fasting (r (2) 0.090, beta -0.273, p = 0.001) and post-load glucose (r (2) 0.061, beta -0.187, p = 0.022), serum IL-6 (r (2) 0.082, beta -0.234, p = 0.002), and carotid IMT (r (2) 0.057, beta -0.168, p = 0.033). Our results suggested that suppressed apelin levels were associated with increased cardiovascular risk in women with pGDM.

Possible radiologic renal signs of COVID-19

Isil Basara Akin, Canan Altay, Oya Eren Kutsoylu, Mustafa Secil

Summary: COVID-19 patients commonly present with respiratory symptoms and pneumonia, but can also have gastrointestinal symptoms. Renal involvement such as acute renal infarct and acute kidney injury has been described in severe cases. However, abnormal renal imaging findings in patients with mild COVID-19 have not been reported.

Summary: Background board exams are now considered as a means of quality procedures to maintain the professional knowledge and skills of physicians. The guide includes 174 elements to be considered before, after the exam order, and examination. The steps to be considered before the exam have a greater impact on the validity and reliability, with a focus on validity in 67.24% of the questions. This resource aims to be helpful for teams with a development goal, candidates taking the exam, and examiners.

Summary: This study compares the outcomes of parathyroidectomies guided by intra-operative parathyroid hormone (IOPTH) sampling or frozen section (FS) analysis. The results suggest that IOPTH sampling, when performed by experienced surgeons with appropriate preoperative screening, is a safe and effective method for parathyroid surgery. The success of parathyroid surgery is attributed to correct indication, accurate localization, and experienced surgeons.

The accuracy of three-dimensional ultrasonography in the diagnosis of Mullerian duct anomalies and its concordance with magnetic resonance imaging

Summary: This retrospective study compared the diagnostic accuracies of three-dimensional ultrasonography (3D-US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for identifying Mullerian duct anomalies (MDAs). The study found a high level of agreement between 3D-US and MRI, with concordance rates of 96.3% and 88.9% based on ESHRE-ESGE and ASRM classifications, respectively. The results suggest that 3D-US can be a valuable tool for diagnosing MDAs in conjunction with MRI, which can help improve reproductive outcomes and avoid unnecessary surgical interventions. Further research is needed to standardize radiological images for accurately identifying and classifying MDAs.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated TCT images of patients diagnosed with BC in our hospital from January 2007 until December 2017. Results showed significant differences in size and volume data of SPNs in texture analysis, which can be used to distinguish metastatic and non-metastatic nodules without invasive procedures.

Summary: Abdominal pain is a common complaint in emergency departments with various causes. This article presents a case of gastric diverticulitis in an elderly male patient who presented with typical symptoms and was accurately diagnosed through physical examinations and laboratory tests. Gastric diverticulitis is a rare condition in the gastrointestinal tract that can have diverse clinical presentations, and radiological imaging and endoscopic procedures play crucial roles in its diagnosis.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new method using pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to accurately diagnose familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD). The study evaluated measurements from lipodystrophy patients and controls, and found that a combination of gluteal fat thickness and pubic/gluteal fat ratio can reliably diagnose FPLD.
