Summary: Expanding clinical and translational research integration in the Uganda healthcare system has the potential to enhance clinical care. Barrier such as limited funding, collaborations, infrastructure and trained personnel hinder translational research but active collaborations and funding can help develop it. Leveraging international collaborations is key to building capacity in translational research.

Summary: Schizophrenia is a significant mental illness that affects 0.7% of the world's population. Recent large-scale genomic studies have identified risk genes and opened up possibilities for targeted treatments. Studying gene variants in mouse models is a valuable strategy for understanding their role in the disease. Longitudinal studies in mouse models are necessary for improving early diagnosis and prevention strategies.

Summary: Optical elastography, including optical coherence elastography, Brillouin microscopy, optical microrheology, and photoacoustic elastography, provides a bridge between organ-level medical elastography and single-molecule biophysics. This review discusses the methodologies, recent developments, and integration potential of these techniques with supporting technologies in biomedical fields. By embracing cross-modality and cross-disciplinary interactions, optical elastography can drive new discoveries and advancements in biomedical sciences, facilitating the development of biomechanics-based clinical diagnostics and therapeutics.

Summary: Bronchiectasis is a respiratory disease characterized by radiological abnormalities and a clinical syndrome of cough, sputum production, and recurrent respiratory infections. Inflammation, particularly neutrophilic inflammation, plays a central role in bronchiectasis pathophysiology. This article discusses the roles of infection, inflammation, and mucociliary clearance dysfunction in the development and progression of bronchiectasis. It also explores the concept of inflammatory endotypes and the potential of treating inflammation as a target. Current treatments for bronchiectasis focus on addressing underlying causes, improving mucociliary clearance, controlling infection, and managing complications. Additionally, the article discusses future therapies targeting host-mediated immune dysfunction.

Summary: Melatonin plays a significant role in synchronizing the body's daily rhythm to the light/dark cycle and has been linked to changes in rest-activity patterns and sleep disturbances in depression. While there is experimental and clinical evidence supporting its involvement in depressive states and therapeutic response monitoring, the efficacy of melatonin or melatonin agonists in treating depression is still debated. The complexity of melatonin's interactions with various biological processes underscores the need for a thorough understanding of its role in mental health disorders.

Summary: Children exposed to SSRI/SNRI treatment during pregnancy do not have significantly higher risk of ADHD compared to those who were untreated or discontinued treatment, but there is an elevated risk at 7-9 years old. Maternal depression/anxiety before pregnancy is independently associated with child ADHD.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the frequency of hospitalisations due to all-cause and ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) among individuals with dementia. The results showed that potentially avoidable hospitalisations were common in people with dementia, especially in those with more advanced cognitive impairment. Therefore, it is important to consider the extent of cognitive status impairment, not just the diagnosis of dementia, when evaluating measures to reduce the risk of potentially avoidable hospitalisations.

Summary: A study in New South Wales, Australia, found that younger people (aged 15-64 years) with neuropsychiatric disorders who were discharged from hospitals to residential aged care (RAC) were mainly associated with progressive neurological and cognitive disorders. Other influencing factors included acute precipitants such as a range of conditions and injuries, as well as older age, being unmarried or not having a partner, living in lower socioeconomic areas, functional issues, and the need for palliative care.

Summary: This study examined the sociodemographic and diagnostic factors associated with discharge from hospital to residential aged care for younger people with neuropsychiatric disorders. The study found that progressive neurological and cognitive disorders were most strongly associated with discharge to aged care. Other factors included older age, not being partnered, living in areas of lower socioeconomic status, functional issues, and the need for palliative care.

Summary: Translation by the ribosome is the final step in the process of producing proteins from DNA. Recent research has shown that the ribosome also plays a role in controlling mRNA stability and degradation. The rate at which the ribosome moves along the mRNA molecule affects the stability of the transcript. This process is influenced by the codon sequence, with some codons causing the ribosome to pause and adopt a specific conformation that triggers mRNA degradation. These findings suggest that the coding region of mRNA not only determines protein content, but also impacts protein levels by influencing the fate of the transcript.

Summary: This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on clinical psychiatric diagnoses using electronic health records from the New York City metropolitan region. The findings show that patients with pre-COVID psychiatric diagnoses are more likely to have subsequent anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and psychosis after COVID-19 infection. Patients without pre-COVID psychiatric diagnoses are more likely to have substance use disorders and new diagnoses of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and psychosis during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: This study investigated the familial relationships between interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC) and other nociplastic pain disorders (e.g. fibromyalgia), irritable bowel syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, and psychiatric conditions (major depressive disorder, panic disorder). The results showed strong evidence for heritable interrelationships among these conditions, indicating a common genetic component.
