A total of 162 groundwater samples for three representative seasons were collected from Salem district of Tamilnadu, India to decipher hydrogeochemistry and groundwater quality for determining its suitability for drinking and agricultural proposes. The water is neutral to alkaline in nature with pH ranging from 6.6 to 8.6 with an average of 8.0. Higher electrical conductivity was observed during post-monsoon season. The abundance of major ions in the groundwater was in the order of Na > Ca > Mg > K = Cl > HCO(3) > SO(4) > NO(3). Piper plot reveals the dominance of geochemical facies as mixed Ca-Mg-Cl, Na-Cl, Ca-HCO(3), Ca-Na-HCO(3), and Ca-Cl type. NO(3), Cl, SO(4), and F exceed the permissible limit during summer and post-monsoon seasons. Sodium adsorption ratio was higher during post-monsoon and southwest monsoon season indicating high and low salinity, satisfactory for plants having moderate salt tolerance on soils. Permeability index of water irrespective of season falls in class I and class II indicating water is moderate to good for irrigation purposes. As per the classification of water for irrigation purpose, water is fit for domestic and agricultural purposes with minor exceptions irrespective of seasons.

Evolution of hydrogeochemistry in groundwater production fields of Kuwait - Inferences from long-term data

Tariq Rashid, Chidambaram Sabarathinam, Habib Al-Qallaf, Harish Bhandary, Mariam Al-Jumaa, Ahmed Shishter, Bandar Al-Salman

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of hydrochemical characteristics of the Shagaya water field in Kuwait. The results show a significant decrease in TDS concentration over time, which is attributed to the inflow of better-quality water from the up gradient parts of the aquifers. The salinization phenomenon is found to be caused by rock-water interaction, ion exchange, and mixing between different groundwater sources.

Identification of high nitrate concentration in shallow groundwater of an arid region: a case study of South Kuwait's Bay

Bedour Alsabti, Chidambaram Sabarathinam, Dhanu Radha Svv

Summary: Coastal aquifers, especially in arid environments, are vulnerable to groundwater-seawater interaction. Kuwait's Bay groundwater is polluted due to anthropogenic activities like desalination plants and power plants. This study focused on nitrate contamination in groundwater samples collected from the southern part of Kuwait's Bay. Results showed high nitrate concentrations, mainly from contamination sources such as sewage leakage, seawater intrusion, chemical weathering, and denitrifying bacteria. The elevated nitrate levels pose health risks and may lead to eutrophication in the Bay. Proper management strategies are necessary to control nitrate pollution in groundwater.

Influence of Dissolved Oxygen, Water Level and Temperature on Dissolved Organic Carbon in Coastal Groundwater

Thilagavathi Rajendiran, Chidambaram Sabarathinam, Banajarani Panda, Vetrimurugan Elumalai

Summary: The quality and availability of groundwater have been significantly affected by urbanization along the coasts due to climate change and changes in land use patterns. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in water is a major concern in current groundwater quality research. This study examined 68 groundwater samples and found that DOC in groundwater is influenced by DO, water level, and water temperature. High DOC levels were observed in urban regions, which correlated positively with dissolved inorganic ions. Various factors such as domestic wastewater, agricultural runoff, and local geology contribute to the DOC in groundwater. It was also found that groundwater chemistry is influenced by both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Land use, geology, water level, and temperature are interrelated with the distribution of DOC in groundwater, with higher levels found in shallow groundwater around built-up and agricultural regions.

Distribution and fractionation of metals in tropical estuarine sediments, NW Borneo: Implication for ecological risk assessment

Rakesh Roshan Gantayat, Prasanna Mohan Viswanathan, Nagarajan Ramasamy, Chidambaram Sabarathinam

Summary: Sediments from the estuary of the Sibuti River in Malaysia were analyzed for metal fractionation. The study found that Pb, Cd, and Mn were the most mobile metals, while the majority of metals were associated with the residual fraction. The sequential extraction method revealed that Cd, Se, and Cr were dominantly associated with carbonate, reducible, and oxidizable fractions respectively. Factor analysis showed the regulation of Mn absorption by microorganisms and the role of organic matter in the absorption and settlement of Fe and Al-oxyhydroxides. The study also identified high contamination of Se, Co, Cu and Cd in the estuarine sediment, with Cu and Cr posing the maximum threat to the benthic community.
