Summary: Climate change has a dynamic impact on ecosystems, requiring more flexible and responsive ecosystem management. The ability to adapt management approaches depends on access to resources and social capital, which in turn are influenced by socio-political conditions. While there is extensive research on adaptive capacity at the individual, community, and organization level, there is less focus on adaptive capacity within governance networks involved in ecosystem management. This study analyzes three governance networks in the Pacific Northwestern US and identifies four key socio-political conditions that shape adaptive capacity: political power, legal power, institutional support, and extent of protected land.

Summary: Regional ecological assessments in the Appalachian region of the United States focus on quantifying the connections between forest-based ecosystem services, forest ecosystem processes, and their linkages. Assessments typically target ecosystem-level properties or specific ecosystem services/stressors, but often fail to quantify the relationships between these properties and ecosystem services. This highlights the need for integrated system-level assessments and ecosystem service evaluations to improve ecosystem management practices.

Summary: The Thames, as an iconic river of cultural and historical importance, has undergone cycles of deterioration and technology-driven restorations in the past two centuries, but these restoration efforts have often had detrimental effects on the river ecosystem, leading to biodiversity loss and the spread of non-native pollution-tolerant species. Therefore, a broader perspective is needed to consider river restoration and management in order to address the accelerating changes in the Anthropocene era.
