A preliminary feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of adult variegated grasshopper (Zonocerus variegatus) meal (VGM) as a replacement for fish meal in the diets of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings. Proximate analysis result showed that VGM had 61.50% crude protein, 6.87% crude lipid, 27.33 NFE and 9.35% chitin. Five isonitrogenous (30%) and isoenergetic (18.42 MJ kg-1) diets were formulated in which VGM progressively replaced fishmeal at five inclusion levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). The best performance in terms of % weight gain was observed in the group of fish fed ED1 (25% inclusion level) and was not significantly different (P>0.05) from the groups fed the control diet. Weight gain and specific growth rate were significantly lower (P<0.05) in the group fed ED4 (100%VGM). Feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio were numerically but not significantly different (P>0.05) among the different groups. The results indicate that apparent protein and lipid digestibility were high at all levels, although there were decreases with an increase in the inclusion levels. Carcass lipid decreased with an increase in the inclusion level of VGM. The VGM can replace fish meal up to 25% in the diets of C. gariepinus fingerlings without any adverse effect on growth and nutrient utilization.

Summary: The study showed that replacing fishmeal with catfish visceral meal in the diets of African catfish resulted in higher weight gain and improved economic performance, with no significant differences in most physiological parameters except for some specific enzymes activities in the liver.

Summary: The study found that H. niloticus retained most of its original sensory attributes of freshness during the first 12 hours post-slaughter, with intact muscle tissues, acceptable biochemical and microbial results. However, the sensory attributes of the fish fell below average after 12 hours. It is therefore recommended not to delay H. niloticus beyond 12 hours post-slaughter.

Effect of Post Slaughter Time Interval (PSI) on the Quality of Heteroclarias

Summary: The post-slaughter time interval (PSI) significantly affects the quality of heteroclarias fish product. A study was conducted to assess the effect of PSI on heteroclarias through sensory, histological, proximate, biochemical, and microbial evaluations. Results showed that after 12 hours PSI, most sensory attributes were retained, but protein content, minerals, pH level, volatile base nitrogen, peroxide value, free fatty acids, and microbial counts increased significantly. It is recommended to preserve or process heteroclarias fish within 12 hours PSI to obtain high-quality raw material for consumers.

Summary: A nutritional comparison was conducted between Auchenoglanis occidentalis, Labeo parvus, and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus. Proximate, mineral, and amino acid analysis were performed and the results were analyzed using statistical tools. The study found that A. occidentalis had higher mineral composition, daily mineral intake, chemical score, predicted protein efficiency ratio, and biological value compared to L. parvus and C. nigrodigitatus. Therefore, consumption of A. occidentalis is recommended as a source of high-quality protein.

Summary: This study compares the biochemical constituents of seminal plasma in wild and cultured Clarias gariepinus broodstock, finding that the cultured Clarias gariepinus generally had higher values for most semen biochemical compositions. These findings are important for improving gamete management, increasing yields, and enhancing the suitability of semen for short-term storage.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of toasted sesame meal as a soybean meal replacer in the diet of Clarias gariepinus, showing positive results in growth, body composition, digestibility, hematology, and liver histology. There was no significant difference between the soybean-based control diet and those with up to 30% replacement of sesame seed in terms of fish performance indices. Liver histology showed no visible lesions in fish fed with all levels of sesame seed replacement.
