Northern bluefin tuna (NBT) are a prominent marine pelagic fish species. There are few reference values for their blood chemistry and this is the first report to demonstrate blood biochemical values in the Eastern Mediterranean. The study was carried out with 60 captive (penned) and 60 wild NBTs from Ildir Bay (Izmir) and Antalya Bay in the Eastern Mediterranean, from winter to early summer 2003. The aim of this research was to determine the biochemical parameters of wild male/female and captive male/female NBTs. According to the present results, the blood biochemical values of the captive NBTs were significantly higher than those of wild NBTs (P < 0.05) except albumin, globulin, total protein and very low-density lipoprotein levels. Moreover, many of the biochemical parameters were detected at high levels in captive and wild male NBTs than those of the females. Especially, the values of glucose, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, ferritin, transferrin and iron levels were significantly higher, although high-density lipoprotein values were significantly lower in wild and captive male samples than those of both groups of females (P < 0.05).

Summary: By conducting genome-wide linkage and association analysis on forty individuals with a history of RLS, this study identified evidence of linkage at three loci on chromosome 7 and subsequently found six new genes associated with RLS through fine-mapping and exome sequencing.

Summary: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a monogenic autoinflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent fever, abdominal pain, joint manifestations, erysipelas-like erythema, and renal complications. This study analyzes the MEFV gene analysis results and clinical findings of 27,504 patients from Turkey and Northern Cyprus to better understand the genotype-phenotype correlation and provide insights into this complex disease.

Summary: This article presents a case study of an 18-year-old female patient with mesomelic dysplasia and a multisystem phenotype. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel variant in the HOXA11 gene, which is predicted to affect protein function. In silico analyses suggest that the variant may alter protein-protein interactions.

Summary: This study examined the attitudes of employees in marine fish hatcheries towards occupational health and safety. It was found that a majority of the employees were unaware of relevant laws, but had an awareness of the dangers and risks in their workplaces. In the case of a negative situation, a significant proportion of employees were aware of their legal rights. Additionally, a large percentage of employees expressed their willingness to exercise their right to object and quit their jobs in risky situations. A considerable number of employees believed that their jobs could fulfil their social and economic needs throughout their life.

A homozygous missense variant in the WRN gene segregating in a family with progressive pulmonary failure with recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax and interstitial lung disease

Summary: This report presents a case of a family with five patients with ILD. The patients were diagnosed with ILD through clinical and radiological evaluations. Molecular genetic analysis of the family revealed two homozygous rare variants that were closely associated with the phenotype. Network analysis suggested that the variant in the WRN gene could be the main factor leading to the ILD phenotype, potentially through the altered DNA repair and telomere maintenance pathways.
