The effects on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) metabolic health of including modern processed land animal byproducts (LAP) to a plant-and marine-based diet (50% marine and 50% plant ingredients) were investigated. Three experimental diets were made with systematic replacements of both marine and plant ingredients with LAP as a source of protein (poultry meal and porcine blood meal) and fat (poultry oil) to fit a two-way factorial design. A 16-week feeding trial was performed with postsmolts in seawater (initial weight 372 g). The diet with both protein and lipids from LAP reduced liver triacylglycerols more than fourfold compared to the diet without LAP. This was confirmed by histological examinations showing reduced fatty degeneration in the liver of fish fed the high LAP diet. No severe negative effects on gut or tissue health were seen by histological examinations or by measuring genetic markers with qPCR, although a trend in the histological results indicated an improved gut health by including LAP in the diets. Clinical analyses of plasma and lipoprotein fractions showed no differences between dietary groups.

Increasing dietary n-6 fatty acids while keeping n-3 fatty acids stable decreases EPA in polar lipids of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Bjorg K. Hundal, Nina S. Liland, Grethe Rosenlund, Marta Bou, Ingunn Stubhaug, Nini H. Sissener

Summary: Increased dietary n-6 FA leads to reduced n-3 in tissue polar lipids in Atlantic salmon, with EPA significantly reduced while DHA remains stable. Maintaining a stable n-3 content in polar lipids can be achieved by simultaneously increasing dietary n-3 content and maintaining the same n-6:n-3 FA ratio. The study suggests that a better use of dietary EPA is achieved by keeping the dietary n-6:n-3 FA ratio low.

Summary: The study showed that replacing soybean oil with n-3 enriched BSFO positively influenced the growth, lipid metabolism, inflammation, and gene expression in juvenile mirror carp. The most significant improvements were observed when BSFO replaced 50% or more of soybean oil.

Summary: Increasing the dietary n-6/n-3 FA ratio in salmon feeds can potentially alter the way the fish respond to stressors, but growth and overall health of the fish are not affected by this dietary change.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of dietary n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio on the growth and disease progression of Atlantic salmon challenged with Paramoeba perurans. The results showed that an increased dietary n-6/n-3 FA ratio affected the growth of the fish, while the challenge with P. perurans did not alter the mRNA expression of immune genes.

A meta-analysis on the nutritional value of insects in aquafeeds

N. S. Liland, P. Araujo, X. X. Xu, E-J Lock, G. Radhakrishnan, A. J. P. Prabhu, I Belghit

Summary: The chapter discusses the impact of insects in aquafeeds, suggesting a maximum threshold of 25-30% for insect inclusion in aquafeeds for uncompromised performance. It also identifies factors such as reduction in protein digestibility, imbalanced amino acid profile, and increasing levels of saturated fatty acids as major limitations for higher inclusion of insects in aquafeeds.
