The present study investigated the effects of microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. addition and concentration on larval survival, development and growth of an Australian strain of M. rosenbergii (lineage 11). Newly hatched larvae were reared to postlarval (PL) stage under the condition of no algae addition ('clear water') and four Nannochloropsis concentrations of 2.5, 6.25, 12.5 and 25 x 10(5) cells/ml. All treatments were in quadruplicate and each replicate had 30 larvae stocked in a 5L vessel. Larvae were fed 3 Artemia/ml throughout with 100% water exchange daily. The results showed that larval survival to PL at the two higher algae concentrations of 12.5 and 25x10(5) cells/ml (70.8 and 63.3%, respectively) were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of lower algae concentrations of 2.5 and 6.25x10(5) cells/ml and the 'clear water' treatments (26.7, 35.0 and 30.0%, respectively). Meanwhile, the fastest mean development to PL (30.6 days) registered at the highest algal density was 14 days shorter than that of the 'clear water' treatment (44.3 days). Larval development at the two higher algal densities were significantly shorter than that of the 'clear water' treatment and larval development of the highest algal density was further significantly faster than those of the two lower algal densities (40.1 and 40.0 days) (P<0.05). The mean dry weights of newly settled PL of the two high algal density treatments were also significantly heavier (P<0.05) than those of the lowest algal density and the 'clear water' treatments. The results have shown that the addition of Nannochloropsis sp. at appropriate levels substantially improved performance of larval culture of the Australian strain of M. rosenbergii, suggesting that the Australian native strain has a promising potential for aquacultural development. Summary: The study revealed that Lvit-IAG1 modulates male sexual differentiation and exhibits negative feedback on Lvit-GIH and Lvit-CFSH gene expression in the eyestalk ganglion of the peppermint shrimp Lysmata vittata. Additionally, silencing of the Lvit-IAG1 gene inhibits the development of appendices masculinae and male gonopores, as well as impairs ovarian development.

The effects of live prey and greenwater on the early larval rearing of orchid dottyback Pseudochromis fridmani

Jun Yu Chen, Chaoshu Zeng

Summary: The study found that co-feeding early P. fridmani larvae with rotifers and copepods, along with the use of greenwater containing a high concentration of algal cells (> 2.27 x 106 NAN cells/mL), can enhance larval survival, growth, and development. However, when the algal cell density falls below this threshold, using such a co-feeding strategy may compromise the survival of P. fridmani larvae.

Ontogenetic variation in digestive enzyme activities within embryos and newly-hatched larvae of the tropical spiny lobster, Panulirus ornatus

Summary: This study investigates the digestive enzyme activities during early life stages of the tropical spiny lobster Panulirus ornatus. The results suggest that lipid is crucial for early embryonic development, with a shift to protein utilization after hatching. The findings emphasize the importance of providing a protein-rich food source to phyllosoma soon after hatch for successful culture.

Recent developments in male fertility evaluation, sperm cryopreservation and artificial fertilisation, and their potential application to decapod crustacean aquaculture

Jon Irish Legaspi Aquino, Lisa Elliott, Chaoshu Zeng, Damien B. B. P. Paris

Summary: Understanding the causes of subfertility and assessing sperm quality are crucial for improving productivity and accelerating selective breeding in decapod crustaceans. Traditional methods of sperm quality assessment can be replaced with widely used diagnostic biomarkers from humans and mammals, along with sperm cryopreservation and artificial fertilisation techniques. These tools allow for long-term storage, controlled timing, and selection of individuals for reproduction, ultimately enhancing commercial broodstock management in the crustacean aquaculture industry.

Effects of Microalgal Food Quantity on Several Productivity-Related Parameters of the Calanoid Copepod Bestiolina similis (Calanoida: Paracalanidae)

Thomas Camus, Lucrezia Rolla, Jufeng Jiang, Chaoshu Zeng

Summary: Optimizing copepod feeding protocol is crucial for enhancing productivity, maintaining water quality, and reducing operational costs. The study found that microalgal feeding concentration significantly affected various productivity-related parameters of the calanoid copepod Bestiolina similis, with lower rations leading to poorer performance. Feeding at 1,200 mu gC l(-1) was recommended to achieve optimal productivity, as higher concentrations did not yield significant improvements.

Influence of Moult Cycles on Digestive Enzyme Activities during Early Larval Stages of Panulirus ornatus

Jerome Genodepa, Chaoshu Zeng, Thane A. Militz, Paul C. Southgate

Summary: The tropical spiny lobster, Panulirus ornatus, undergoes complex moulting stages during its pelagic larval stages. Changes in morphology, physiology, and biochemistry associated with moulting can affect the dietary needs of this species. Digestive enzyme activities are influenced by nutritional requirements and play a crucial role in nutrient utilization during the first-feeding stage of P. ornatus. However, limited information is available on digestive enzyme activities during other moulting stages. Understanding the fluctuations in digestive enzyme activities throughout the moult cycles can improve feed formulation and feeding strategies for this species.

Diet-egg relationships and equilibration of fatty acids in eggs of southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma

Hunter S. Bailey, Ashley N. Fincannon, Lee A. Fuiman

Summary: This study investigated the transfer of fatty acids from broodstock diets to eggs and the time needed for the eggs to equilibrate to the diet in Southern flounder. The findings indicate that different diet treatments significantly affect the fatty acid composition of eggs, and it takes 8-16 weeks for the eggs to adapt to changes in the adult diet. These results are important for improving broodstock diets and feeding protocols in stock-enhancement programs.
