Characteristics of the post-ionization using femto-second laser (fs laser) combined with the secondary ion mass spectrometer were investigated. For many metals, ionization saturations were confirmed for the laser power density of >2 x 10(13) W/cm(2). The characteristic curve of ionization of Ag against the laser power density suggests the occurrence of ionization through the multi-photon resonance excitation. Sensitivity increase after employing the fs laser post-ionization was manifested and a sputtered Cu signal from a minute circular area with a diameter of about 200 nm could be detected clearly. Summary: Carbonaceous meteorites from C-type asteroids were examined using samples from asteroid (162173) Ryugu. The samples resemble carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, particularly the CI group, and are made up of minerals formed in aqueous fluids. These minerals were altered at a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius about 5.2 million years after the formation of the first solids in the Solar System. The Ryugu samples have a composition similar to the Sun's photosphere.

Summary: Samples of the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were analyzed, revealing the presence of presolar and primordial components. The noble gas concentrations in Ryugu samples were higher than those in CI chondrite meteorites. The isotopically distinct nitrogen in several host phases showed varying abundances. The measurements support a close relationship between Ryugu and CI chondrites, providing insights into the origin and irradiation history of Ryugu.

Summary: The Hayabusa2 brought back samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu to Earth, which were analyzed. The analysis showed that there are carbon dioxide-bearing water inclusions within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu's parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials formed at high temperatures and are rich in phyllosilicates and carbonates, which formed through aqueous alteration reactions at low temperature and high pH. Numerical simulations suggest that Ryugu's parent body formed about 2 million years after the beginning of Solar System formation.

Evaluation of the Residual Mass Fractionation in High-Precision Cr Isotopic Analysis with TIMS

Tetsuya Yokoyama, Yusuke Ohkuma, Keiji Nishikawa, Koki Sumiya, Ikshu Gautam

Summary: The Cr isotope ratios of terrestrial and extra-terrestrial materials are important tracers in geosciences. Previous studies found residual Cr isotopic fractionation in measurements, but the mechanism to reduce this fractionation remained unclear. This study proposes the use of W filaments instead of Re filaments for Cr ionisation to alleviate the residual fractionation, resulting in improved precision in Cr isotope ratios. This finding is of key importance for future studies of terrestrial and extra-terrestrial materials.

Summary: Samples of carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu collected by Hayabusa2 spacecraft contain aromatic and aliphatic carbon, ketone, and carboxyl functional groups. The organic matter shows spectroscopic features consistent with chemically primitive carbonaceous chondrite meteorites that experienced aqueous alteration. The morphology of the organic carbon includes nanoglobules and diffuse carbon associated with phyllosilicate and carbonate minerals. The isotope enrichments suggest that the organic matter originated from a cold molecular cloud or the presolar nebula, and the diversity indicates variable levels of aqueous alteration on Ryugu's parent body.

Summary: We performed in-situ analysis on a 1 mm-sized grain A0080 returned by Hayabusa2 spacecraft to investigate the relationship of soluble organic matter (SOM) to minerals. The distribution of different compound classes of SOM and alkylated homologues exhibited a heterogeneous spatial distribution on the sample surface. The A0080 sample showed mineralogy similar to an Ivuna-type carbonaceous chondrite and contained two different lithologies. CHN compounds were more concentrated in one lithology, while CHO, CHO-Na, and CHNO compounds were distributed in both lithologies. The spatial distribution of SOM is likely influenced by interactions with minerals and fluid activity.

Summary: Evaluating the molecular distribution of organic compounds in pristine extraterrestrial materials is crucial for understanding the synthesis and diversity of organics before the origins of life on Earth. This study identified multiple organic compounds in samples from asteroid Ryugu and the Orgueil meteorite, suggesting an interstellar and parent body origin for these compounds. However, further analysis is required to determine their parent-daughter relationships and the effects of various processes on these meteoritic organics. The findings also have implications for future sample return missions.

Summary: Ryugu is a second-generation C-type asteroid formed by the reassembly of fragments of a previous larger body in the main asteroid belt. Majority of Ryugu samples returned by Hayabusa2 are composed of aqueously altered minerals, but clasts of pristine olivine and pyroxene remain in the least-altered lithologies. Some grains in Ryugu have infrared spectra similar to D-type asteroid Hektor, comet Hale-Bopp, and anhydrous interplanetary dust particles, suggesting that Ryugu's primary parent body incorporated anhydrous ingredients similar to building blocks of asteroids and comets formed in the outer solar system.

Summary: Preliminary analyses of asteroid Ryugu samples show its kinship to aqueously altered CI chondrites, suggesting similar origins. C-rich primitive clasts in Ryugu samples contain preserved presolar silicate grains and exceptional abundances of presolar SiC and isotopically anomalous organic matter. The high presolar silicate abundance indicates minimal alteration, and the significantly higher abundances of presolar SiC, N-rich organic matter, and isotopically anomalous organics in the primitive clasts suggest a unique formation in a presolar material-enriched region of the protoplanetary disk.

Summary: Mass spectrometry of noble gas isotopes extracted from limited amounts of extraterrestrial materials delivered by robotic space missions requires specialized instruments not readily available commercially. Comparing two different configurations of electron impact ionization, the study found that an ion source with cylindrical symmetry and without a magnetic field in the ionization region is better for analyzing all stable noble gas isotopes. This conclusion was supported by isotopic analyses of noble gases retrieved from near-Earth asteroid Ryugu using multi-step heating of sub-milligram samples.
