Vibrational spectroscopy includes several different techniques, the most important of which are mid-infrared (IR), near-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Raman and mid-IR spectroscopy are complementary techniques and usually both are required to completely measure the vibrational modes of a molecule. Vibrational spectrometry covers a series of well-established analytical methodologies suitable to be employed for both qualitative and quantitative purposes. In the first part of this review, we will focus on theoretical aspects related to vibrational techniques; in the second part, the most important papers, published during the period 2005-2014, related to clinical analysis performed with vibrational spectroscopy techniques will be critically discussed.

Adulterated drug analysis using FTIR spectroscopy

Andrei A. Bunaciu, Hassan Y. Aboul-Enein

Summary: Infrared spectroscopy is increasingly used to characterize pharmaceutical products, both chemical substances and herbal, to monitor modifications and detect fraudulent changes. Reviewing relevant papers on the utilization of infrared spectroscopy in the analysis of adulterated drugs (chemical and herbal) products between 2015 and 2020 provides insight into its importance in the industry.

Separation of Indole-3-acetic Acid from Tryptophan by Bulk Liquid Membrane

Ioana Diaconu, Hassan Y. Aboul-Enein, Cristina Orbeci, Andrei A. Bunaciu, Ecaterina A. Serban, Elena Ruse

Summary: This study investigated the competitive transport of IAA and TRP through a liquid membrane system, achieving a transport efficiency of over 90% for IAA and high selectivity in transport between IAA and TRP. Operational parameters and pH influence were studied, with the procedure showing potential for sample preparation containing these analytes.

FTIR spectroscopy used for study the thermal degradation of lard

Andrei Bunaciu, Serban Fleschin, Hassan Aboul-Enein

Summary: The recent developments in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy instrumentation have extended its application to food research, particularly in the study of edible oils and fats. Attenuated total reflection-FTIR spectroscopy has been used to effectively monitor the oxidation process of lard samples, demonstrating its versatility in evaluating oxidative stability and providing information on oxidation degree in a simple, fast, and accurate manner. The decrease in intensity at specific bands indicates the loss of cis double bonds during oxidation, further confirming the oxidation process.
