Summary: This study used spectrochemical techniques to investigate the cytotoxicity of nanoplastics with different surface charges in HepG2 cells. The results showed that all three types of nanoplastics caused biomolecular alterations in cells, affecting cellular lipids, proteins, amino acids, and genetic material. Surface modifications were found to lead to cellular biochemical changes and adverse biological effects, with PS-NH2 exhibiting higher toxicity compared to PS or PS-COOH.

Summary: In this study, microplastic and microfiber contamination in the effluents of a wastewater treatment plant in Saskatoon, Canada was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized. Fibers accounted for the majority of synthetic microparticles, with stable concentrations across seasons. Despite relatively low concentrations per liter of effluent, the large daily discharge volume results in significant emissions of particles into the river. Environmental implications of these findings require further investigation, but they represent an important initial step in understanding microplastic contamination in the Canadian Prairies.

Summary: The coronavirus pandemic poses a significant threat to human health, and early detection and prevention of further escalation are of utmost importance. The current method of sample collection and RNA testing using the nasopharyngeal swab method and real-time polymerase chain reaction has limitations. Optical techniques, such as optical sensing, spectroscopy, and imaging, show promise in virus detection due to their speed, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness. This mini review summarizes the development of vibrational spectroscopy techniques for the detection of the SARS-CoV family, highlighting their advantages and future possibilities in the field of photonics-based devices for COVID-19 detection.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using the carbonyl index (CI) derived from Raman spectra as an indicator of plastic degradation and its relationship with the CI calculated from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, using microplastic samples of polyethylene (PE) from surface seawater. While some significant relations between FTIR CI and Raman CI were observed, weak functional relationships due to low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Raman spectra were indicated by small R2 values. These findings highlight the challenges of establishing a functional relationship between FTIR CI and Raman CI, including the uniformity of Raman spectra, optimal Raman measurement parameters, appropriate peaks for Raman CI calculation, spectral processing methods, and their interdependence.

Summary: This study collected fly ash samples from seven typical power plants in Shanxi province, China, to explore the effect of carbon residue structures on their burnout characteristic. The results showed that the structure of carbon residues in the fly ash has a significant impact on burnout characteristic, with more ordered structures in fly ash from circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plants suppressing burnout and leading to an increase in loss on ignition (LOI) content, while less ordered structures in fly ash from pulverized coal boilers (PC) promoting burnout and resulting in a reduction of LOI content.

Summary: The recent developments in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy instrumentation have extended its application to food research, particularly in the study of edible oils and fats. Attenuated total reflection-FTIR spectroscopy has been used to effectively monitor the oxidation process of lard samples, demonstrating its versatility in evaluating oxidative stability and providing information on oxidation degree in a simple, fast, and accurate manner. The decrease in intensity at specific bands indicates the loss of cis double bonds during oxidation, further confirming the oxidation process.
