Portable Equipment for Luminescence Lifetime Measurements on Surfaces

The prototype of a portable instrument, based on the time-correlated single-photon counting method, purposely assembled for in situ measurements of luminescence lifetimes on artwork surfaces, is here presented. Preliminary tests have been carried out using the portable instrument and the results have been compared with those obtained using a bench instrument. In this way we have proven that the prototype provides lifetime measurements with good precision. It is also shown that fluorescence lifetime determinations, coupled with steady-state fluorescence spectra, allow the distinguishing, on laboratory samples, of different red organic lakes having similar fluorescence spectra, achieving new boundaries in the nondestructive diagnosis of artwork materials. The first in situ application of the technique on an original work of art, The Book of Kells, held at Trinity College Library, Dublin, highlighted the diagnostic potential of coupled steady-state and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy in the identification of organic colorants.

Summary: This paper reports the measurement of sub-MeV solar neutrinos using the Borexino detector. A novel technique correlated individual photon hits to the known position of the Sun, achieving accurate measurements. The results are consistent with the standard solar model predictions and previous spectroscopic results.

Summary: This study investigates the photoluminescence properties and (photo)chemical reactivity of cadmium red pigments in oil paintings using a multi-length scale and multi-method approach. The results show that the relative intensity of deep level emissions (DLEs) is influenced by moisture, while the morphology, microstructure, and local atomic environment of the pigment particles have no effect on the DLEs.

Summary: Finding evidence of dark matter interactions is a major goal in physics. Liquid argon time projection chambers can probe weakly interacting massive particles down to a few GeV to hundreds of TeV. Based on the success of DarkSide-50, a more sensitive experiment called DarkSide-20k is now being constructed. Understanding the DarkSide-50 detector's response is crucial for designing the new experiment effectively.

Summary: This study focuses on the investigation of damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), including various new physics models such as quantum decoherence, nu(3) decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The findings suggest that JUNO can significantly improve the limits on these damping parameters compared to current experimental limits, as well as distinguish the different damping signatures in practical experiments.

Summary: In this publication, new sensitivity estimates for the measurement of oscillation parameters using JUNO experiment are presented. The estimates are obtained based on the best available knowledge on the experimental site, nuclear reactors in the surrounding area, detector response uncertainties, and spectral shape constraints of reactor antineutrinos. The results show that the oscillation parameters can be determined with a precision of 0.5% or better in six years of data collection, representing a significant improvement over existing constraints.

Summary: This study presents the potential for detecting the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), focusing on the inverse-beta-decay (IBD) detection channel. The authors investigate the background and its reduction for the DSNB search at JUNO, with a particular focus on the atmospheric neutrino induced neutral current (NC) background. By employing the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) and triple coincidence (TC) cuts, along with improved background evaluation and optimization of PSD efficiency, JUNO is projected to achieve a 3-sigma significance within 3 years and better than 5-sigma after 10 years for a reference DSNB model.

Summary: The DarkSide-50 experiment used the ionization effect to detect sub-GeV/c2 dark matter and achieved enhanced sensitivity by analyzing the ionization signal alone. It was able to detect dark matter with masses as low as 40 MeV/c2 and set the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below 3.6 GeV/c2.

Summary: We conducted a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/c2 masses that interact with electrons as final state particles using data from the DarkSide-50 experiment, which was based on low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. Through analysis of the ionization signals, we were able to exclude previously unexplored parameter space for dark matter-electron interaction, including the cross section sigma over bar e, the axioelectric coupling constant gAe, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter kappa. Additionally, we established the first direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle IUe412 for keV/c2 sterile neutrinos.

Multi-Scale X-ray Imaging of the Pigment Discoloration Processes Triggered by Chlorine Compounds in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi

Summary: This study examines the chromatic alteration of various paint types on mural painting fragments from The Upper Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi in Italy using synchrotron radiation. The fragments are from ceiling paintings attributed to Cimabue and Giotto, with different discoloration in white, blue/green, and brown/yellow/orange areas. X-ray fluorescence and diffraction maps were collected from the fragments, and paint cross-sections were analyzed using microscopic X-ray fluorescence and powder diffraction mapping. The study identified numerous secondary products on the painted surfaces, including copper tri-hydroxychloride, corderoite, calomel, plattnerite, scrutinyite, whewellite, and weddellite.

Summary: We propose a novel approach for dark matter search in the DarkSide-50 experiment using Bayesian Networks. Our approach incorporates the detector response model into the likelihood function, without assuming linearity or specific probability distribution functions. By expressing the problem in terms of Bayesian Networks, we have developed an inference algorithm based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Our approach not only provides information on the parameter of interest, but also allows for studying systematic variations of parameters on the final results.

Summary: In this study, the DarkSide-50 experiment at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso analyzed the complete dataset acquired with a low-radioactivity argon target to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the mass range below 10 GeV/c². The new analysis improved the calibration of the detector response, background model, and determination of systematic uncertainties, allowing for a more accurate modeling of background rate and spectra down to 0.06 keVr. By setting a 90% C.L. exclusion limit for the spin-independent cross section of WIMPs with a mass of 3 GeV/c² on nucleons at 6 x 10-43 cm², this study extends the exclusion region for spin-independent dark matter interactions below the current experimental constraints in the [1.2, 3.6] GeV/c² WIMP mass range.
