Summary: This study proposes a non-magnetic regenerator material, Ag2O, which exhibits optical phonon degree of freedom even at cryogenic temperatures, for use in regenerative cryocoolers. Experimental results show that the low temperature specific heat of Ag2O is enhanced by the contribution of optical phonons, making it advantageous in terms of cooling performance.

Summary: This study presents a method for determining the conduction shape factor for complex porous media by performing pore-level simulations on mathematically-generated geometric models. The shape factor is found to be dependent on both porosity and pore diameter, and can be characterized by a quadratic expression. The results are validated by comparing computations of conjugate heat transfer using pore-level and volume-averaged approaches.

Summary: This paper investigates a method of improving the performance of 4 K refrigerators by increasing the cross-sectional area of the regenerator at the colder part. Results show that the variable cross-sectional refrigerator achieves a lower no-load temperature and an increased coefficient of performance (COP) compared to the uniform one. The improvement is more significant at lower refrigeration temperatures, but tends to vanish at around 6 K. Additionally, this method also has some side effects that hinder the positive effects.

Summary: Magnetocaloric materials with first-order magnetic phase transitions are low-cost working materials in magnetic heat pumping cycles, but hysteresis associated with first order transitions remains a challenge. A developed one-dimensional active magnetic regenerator model accounts for thermal and magnetic hysteresis, showing good agreement with experimental data. Predicted cooling power can be well estimated using cyclic measurements of adiabatic temperature change while disregarding hysteresis.

Summary: A simple one-pot method was proposed to synthesize Sb@C enantioseparation material with a controllable spherical core-shell structure. The formation mechanism of the core-shell structure was clarified. The capping of tartaric acid enantiomer on the Sb-S substance and the possible separation mechanism by hydrogen bonding based on sterical matching were verified. The structure and enantioseparation capacity of the Sb@C materials can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of Sb/S. This work presents a feasible and relatively universal strategy to design enantioseparation materials with potential application.

Summary: Oral adsorbents can effectively treat chronic kidney disease by removing endogenous toxins from the gastrointestinal tract. A novel polystyrene-based spherical activated carbon adsorbent with an ultrahigh specific surface area and good particle strength was prepared via air-oxidation and steam activation. This adsorbent showed high creatinine adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity for different molecular weight adsorbates, and was not significantly affected by pH variations. The mechanism of creatinine adsorption on the adsorbents was proposed to involve Van der Waals force and hydrogen bond as the driving forces.

Summary: The development of bare metal powder using the LO-ITP method enables low-temperature sintering for conductive interfaces, which can be utilized in various industries. By peeling the surface of Al particles, the LO-ITP method achieves surface cleaning and produces bare metal micro-sized powders. The interfaces between bare Al powders can achieve direct contact at a lower temperature than the conventional sintering temperature.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between hearing ability and cognitive domains and determine the changes after introducing a hearing aid for 6 months. Pure tone audiometry and monosyllabic word discrimination score were used to assess hearing ability, and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to evaluate cognitive domains. The results indicated a significant association between hearing ability and cognitive domains in individuals with impaired cognitive functions, suggesting a potential relationship between cognitive domains, hearing ability, and auditory compensation.

Summary: This study examines the impact of downstream flow in the voice prosthesis during shunt vocalization on the esophageal wall in order to identify the key factors influencing sound generation in the esophagus. Simulations of the trachea and esophagus were performed to measure flow through the voice prosthesis and calculate pressure distribution in the esophageal section. The results demonstrate that temporal variations in pressure downstream of the voice prosthesis and its impingement on the esophageal wall are the primary sources of sound generation within the esophageal section, with the frequency of the generated sound being dependent on the oscillations of the valve.

Summary: In this study, a high hardness of 1.4 GPa and electrical conductivity of 1.52 x 107 S/m are achieved in an Al-carbon nanotube (CNT) composite using bare Al nanopowder as a metal matrix. The highly dispersed CNTs and controlled Al/CNT interface are achieved due to the similar size of Al nanopowder and less oxide layers on the Al particle surface. Fine Al4C3 grains formed at the Al/CNT interface enhance the hardness while the remaining Al/Al interface preserves the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of the Al-CNT composites in this study is 33 times higher than that of Al-nanocarbons with the same hardness level.

Summary: Sm2Fe17N3 coarse powder was consolidated into a disc magnet using high-pressure torsion technique and achieved grain subdivision within the powder particles, resulting in a bulk magnet with increased coercivity. The generation of grain subdivision was found to be associated with the motion of dislocations in non-basal planes. However, excessively large strain led to the loss of the hard magnetic phase and the coercivity.

Summary: Primary and metastatic malignancies in the sinuses are rare and diverse in histology. The role of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and its cytomorphologic characteristics in these tumors have not been specifically addressed. Here, we present two cases of suspected malignant maxillary sinus tumors in elderly patients, aged 85 and 90, who underwent FNAC after unsuccessful tissue biopsies. The diagnoses of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma were made using FNAC, with the latter case showing identifiable individual cells using the cell block method.
