HoN and ErN spheres were synthesized by nitriding metallic spheres, and their regenerator performance was investigated by measuring the cooling power, CP, using a commercial Gifford-McMahon cryocooler loaded with the samples. The lowest achieved temperature was below 4.2 K. The CP of the nitride spheres was decreased by the presence of surface roughness, porosity, and oxide impurities. The intrinsic cooling power of ErN, calculated by considering these deficiencies, was greater than that measured for HoCu2. This high performance originates from the large specific heat, which peak at approximately 5K given by magnetic transition. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Surface Cleaning Effect of Bare Aluminum Micro-Sized Powder by Low Oxygen Induction Thermal Plasma

Dasom Kim, Yusuke Hirayama, Kenta Takagi, Hansang Kwon

Summary: The development of bare metal powder using the LO-ITP method enables low-temperature sintering for conductive interfaces, which can be utilized in various industries. By peeling the surface of Al particles, the LO-ITP method achieves surface cleaning and produces bare metal micro-sized powders. The interfaces between bare Al powders can achieve direct contact at a lower temperature than the conventional sintering temperature.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between hearing ability and cognitive domains and determine the changes after introducing a hearing aid for 6 months. Pure tone audiometry and monosyllabic word discrimination score were used to assess hearing ability, and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to evaluate cognitive domains. The results indicated a significant association between hearing ability and cognitive domains in individuals with impaired cognitive functions, suggesting a potential relationship between cognitive domains, hearing ability, and auditory compensation.

Downstream flow field structure in voice prosthesis and its effect on sound generation around the esophageal wall

Seiya Kosako, Mariko Hiramatsu, Yasushi Fujimoto, Yoshiyuki Tsuji

Summary: This study examines the impact of downstream flow in the voice prosthesis during shunt vocalization on the esophageal wall in order to identify the key factors influencing sound generation in the esophagus. Simulations of the trachea and esophagus were performed to measure flow through the voice prosthesis and calculate pressure distribution in the esophageal section. The results demonstrate that temporal variations in pressure downstream of the voice prosthesis and its impingement on the esophageal wall are the primary sources of sound generation within the esophageal section, with the frequency of the generated sound being dependent on the oscillations of the valve.

Summary: Endoscopic cricopharyngeal myotomy (ECPM) is a safe and minimally invasive technique used to treat patients with difficulty in opening their esophageal inlet. A new method using a curved rigid laryngoscope was described for ECPM in patients with dysphagia due to pharyngeal residue. The procedure showed good outcomes in eliminating residue and shortening mealtimes.

Fabrication of Al-CNT composite with high hardness and electrical conductivity by controlling Al4C3 formation

Dasom Kim, Yusuke Hirayama, Zheng Liu, Kenta Takagi, Makoto Kobashi

Summary: In this study, a high hardness of 1.4 GPa and electrical conductivity of 1.52 x 107 S/m are achieved in an Al-carbon nanotube (CNT) composite using bare Al nanopowder as a metal matrix. The highly dispersed CNTs and controlled Al/CNT interface are achieved due to the similar size of Al nanopowder and less oxide layers on the Al particle surface. Fine Al4C3 grains formed at the Al/CNT interface enhance the hardness while the remaining Al/Al interface preserves the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of the Al-CNT composites in this study is 33 times higher than that of Al-nanocarbons with the same hardness level.

Summary: We demonstrated a pulse laser with a fundamental repetition rate of 1 GHz using Yb-Mg-doped silica glass fiber. The laser cavity consisted of a 102-mm-long YbMgSGF as the laser medium and a semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror as a mode-locker. The laser output power reached 5.93 mW with a slope efficiency of 3.6% and a lasing threshold power of 5.3 mW.

Summary: A compact vortex source with red, orange, and dual wavelength emission is presented, using a standard microscope slide as an interferometric output coupler. High quality first order vortex modes are achieved in this setup. The device demonstrates broad emission bands in the orange, red, and near-infrared regions, with potential for green and cyan emission. It is a low-cost, compact, and accessible device for visible vortex applications.

Cold consolidation and coercivity enhancement in Sm2Fe17N3 magnets by high-pressure torsion

Akihide Hosokawa, Yusuke Hirayama

Summary: Sm2Fe17N3 coarse powder was consolidated into a disc magnet using high-pressure torsion technique and achieved grain subdivision within the powder particles, resulting in a bulk magnet with increased coercivity. The generation of grain subdivision was found to be associated with the motion of dislocations in non-basal planes. However, excessively large strain led to the loss of the hard magnetic phase and the coercivity.

A Report of Two Cases of Malignant Tumor of the Maxillary Sinus Diagnosed Using Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology

Tessei Kuruma, Tetsuya Ogawa, Mariko Arimoto, Kinga Yo, Yasushi Fujimoto

Summary: Primary and metastatic malignancies in the sinuses are rare and diverse in histology. The role of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and its cytomorphologic characteristics in these tumors have not been specifically addressed. Here, we present two cases of suspected malignant maxillary sinus tumors in elderly patients, aged 85 and 90, who underwent FNAC after unsuccessful tissue biopsies. The diagnoses of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma were made using FNAC, with the latter case showing identifiable individual cells using the cell block method.

Post-operative progress of arm abduction function and rate of lymph node metastasis around the region of the accessory nerve: a multicentre prospective observational study

Toshifumi Tomioka, Takeshi Beppu, Tetsuro Onitsuka, Yasushi Fujimoto, Kazuyoshi Kawabata, Kazuto Matsuura, Takashi Fujii, Ryuichi Hayashi, Takahiro Asakage

Summary: The metastatic rate of Levels IIB and V was low in patients classified as cN0. Omitting Level V dissection may be an option in surgical strategies aimed at maintaining arm abduction function. The recovery of arm abduction function post-surgery is related to the arm abduction test score at 1 month post-operatively.
