This paper uses nonparametric efficiency analysis technique to estimate the energy efficiency, potential emission reductions and marginal abatement costs of energy-related CO2 emissions in China. We employ a non-radial slacks-based data envelopment analysis (DEA) model for estimating the potential reductions and efficiency of CO2 emissions for China. The dual model of the slacks-based DEA model is then used to estimate the marginal abatement costs of CO2 emissions. An empirical study based on China's panel data (2001-2010) is carried out and some policy implications are also discussed. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Do livestock environmental regulations reduce water pollution in China?

Dan Pan, Huan Chen, Ning Zhang, Fanbin Kong

Summary: This article examines the treatment effects of China's livestock environmental regulations (LERs) on water pollution. The results indicate that LERs reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) by an average of 17.82% but do not have a continuous dynamic effect on COD reduction. They are particularly effective in upstream and developed areas, as well as in counties with high initial pollution levels. The total health benefit from reduced mortality and morbidity as a result of LERs is estimated to be $73.27 billion-$219.53 billion, which is significantly higher than the cost of LERs in terms of decreased farmers' income.

Xi Liu, Huibin Du, Xin Zhang, Kuishuang Feng, Xu Zhao, Honglin Zhong, Ning Zhang, Zhenni Chen

Summary: The energy supply chains operating beyond a region's jurisdiction can have significant impacts on local water resources. However, there is a lack of research on the transboundary effects of energy consumption on water stress in China. This study investigates how energy demands affect scarce water resources at provincial and river basin levels in China. The findings highlight the unsustainable nature of current energy demands and propose mitigation options to alleviate water stress.

Earning reduction caused by air pollution: Evidence from China

Liyang Wan, Ning Zhang

Summary: This paper explores the impact of air pollution on employees' earnings in China. The study utilizes both instrument variable (IV) and regression discontinuity design (RDD) methods, and finds that air pollution decreases employees' annual earnings. A one mu g/m3 increase in yearly PM2.5 leads to a 175.4 CNY decrease in annual earnings for employees. The estimated total loss in earnings for all employees in the sample firms reaches approximately 268.59 million CNY. The research demonstrates that the effect of air pollution differs based on factors such as labor intensity, ownership types, and firm size. Mechanism tests further indicate that air pollution reduces employees' earnings by decreasing unit wage and working time. The increase in labor costs for firms exacerbates their operational status. Notably, air pollution has a non-linear negative effect on employees' earnings. Overall, the findings highlight the significant impact of air pollution on employees' benefits by diminishing their earnings, providing strong support for future environmental regulations.

Marginal abatement cost of carbon dioxide emissions: The role of abatement options

F. Wu, S. Y. Wang, P. Zhou

Summary: Reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions comes with costs, and estimating the marginal abatement cost of CO2 emissions (MCAC) is crucial for decision-making. This study contributes by considering different abatement options and revealing that the MCAC can be negative if switching to lower carbon fuel generates profit. They develop a new approach for estimating the MCAC, considering six alternative abatement options. A case study on China's thermal power industry shows that the least-cost abatement option varies across provinces and years, with switching to cleaner energy being a cost-effective option in most cases.

Does air pollution decrease labor share? Evidence from China

Tao Zhou, Ning Zhang

Summary: Labor share is an important indicator for income distribution and social inequality. This study investigates the decline of labor share from the perspective of air pollution, which has been overlooked in previous studies. By using a two-stage least square regression and thermal inversion as an instrumental variable, the study finds that a 1μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration leads to a 0.17 percentage point decrease in labor share. The study also explores the channels through which air pollution affects labor share, including decreases in labor and production productivity and average wage.

Can China achieve carbon neutrality without power shortage? A substitutability perspective

Yu Zhao, Honglin Zhong, Fanbin Kong, Ning Zhang

Summary: The thermal power sector plays a critical role in achieving carbon neutrality in China, contributing to over 40% of carbon mitigation targets. However, the one-size-fits-all approach to carbon reduction driven by national regulatory constraints has led to pressing livelihood and economic issues such as electricity restrictions. This study examines heterogeneous production strategies for thermal power plants under carbon neutrality, finding that about half of the plants can reconcile national targets with profits, while others have to reduce production or transfer emissions to secure revenue.

Drivers of China?s high-quality development: The role of intangible factors

Maoyu Gong, Ning Zhang

Summary: China's economy is transitioning from high-growth to high-quality development by promoting total factor productivity (TFP), with a focus on intangible factors. However, the role of intangible factors has been overlooked in previous research. This study investigates the drivers of TFP and finds that technological innovation is the main driver. Additionally, intangible factors such as knowledge, data, and technology contribute more to TFP growth than traditional factors like labor, capital, and energy. The contribution of intangible factors varies across different locations, economic development levels, and factor richness.

The congestion cost of pipeline networks under third-party access in China's natural gas market

Qi Wei, Peng Zhou, Xunpeng Shi

Summary: This study uses a natural gas market equilibrium model to analyze the utilization rate and congestion cost of China's long-distance pipelines. The results show that although the total utilization rate of these pipelines is 87%, many segments are congested, indicating the potential for optimization. Introducing congestion fees could help identify the pipelines that need structural improvement and capacity expansion, and the study suggests prioritizing optimization of existing networks, deepening market liberalization, and developing functional storage facilities in China's gas market development.

Summary: Electrochemical water splitting is crucial for hydrogen production, and improving the hydrogen separation rate from the electrode is essential for enhancing water electrolyzer performance. However, issues such as air bubble adhesion to the electrode plate hinder the process. Therefore, a methodology to investigate the two-phase flow within the electrolyzer is in high demand. This study proposes using a microfluidic system as a simulator for the electrolyzer and optimizing the two-phase flow by manipulating the micro-structure of the flow.
