Summary: The higher the concentration of various substances in RW, the higher is the risk of the emitter clogging. Suitable concentrations of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), water hardness and calcium ions (Ca2+) in RW were determined to be 0-0.2, 0-0.02, 0-50, 20-30, 200-250 and 0-40 mg L-1, respectively. Pressure-compensating emitters with relatively high discharge (>2 L h(-1)) could prevent clogging in RWDI systems.

Summary: The reasonable evaluation of emitter service duration and appropriate emitter selection are important for improving the efficiency of drip irrigation systems. This study established a comprehensive index, emitter service duration (ESD), to select emitter products in the field. The results showed that irrigation water quality and source significantly influenced ESD, with lower quality water leading to shorter ESD values. Two characteristic parameters, W/D and A(1/2)/L, were found to be correlated with ESD. A prediction model based on these parameters achieved an accuracy of 86%. This research provides an accurate method for selecting emitters under different water source conditions, promoting the safe and efficient operation of drip irrigation systems using low-quality water.

Summary: The study found that irrigation pressures and filter types have a significant influence on emitter clogging in drip fertigation systems. Labyrinth emitters show better anti-clogging performance compared to flat emitters. An appropriate irrigation pressure combined with effective filters can reduce emitter clogging while saving water and fertilizer.

Summary: Micro/nano bubbles have a significant impact on the microbial community and can greatly affect emitter clogging. This study investigates the clogging mechanism in drip irrigation emitters in the presence of micro/nano bubbles. Results show that micro/nano aeration reduces the amount of clogging material and decreases the diversity and abundance of microbial communities in the clogging material.

Summary: Brackish water drip irrigation (BWDI) is an effective method to overcome water scarcity and achieve sustainable agriculture development. This study evaluated the anti-clogging efficacy of compounding humic acid with conventional fertilizer in BWDI systems. The results showed that the humic acid compound fertilizer significantly reduced fouling in the drip irrigation system and the anti-clogging effect improved with increasing humic acid application.

Summary: In this study, an in situ pilot electrochemical device was used to prevent and control clogging in a reclaimed water drip irrigation system. The device effectively treated water quality indicators, resulting in a high sterilization rate and improved system performance. Analysis of water quality indices and microorganisms revealed the mechanisms underlying the antimicrobial and antifouling effects of the electrochemical treatment.

Summary: The study found that water-soluble phosphorus fertilizers and high saline water have significant impacts on the performance of the drip irrigation system, exacerbating emitter clogging issues. Urea phosphate performed better than mono-potassium phosphate in anti-clogging abilities, reducing chemical precipitations inside emitters. These results suggest that water salinity has a greater impact on emitter clogging than fertilizer types.

Summary: This study investigated the clogging of porous ceramic emitters in subsurface drip irrigation systems by analyzing operational data and conducting flushing experiments. It found that clogging was primarily caused by substances precipitating at the emitter inlet and affecting water flow inside the micropores. Flushing with acid water for 15 minutes at a pressure of 100 kPa was recommended to minimize clogging.

Summary: Automatic flushing valves (AFVs) can increase the service life of drip irrigation systems. An automatic flushing drip-irrigation model (AFDM) was developed using the EPANET software to calculate pump pressure and flow rate. The AFV specification and layout pattern were determined to match the flushing duration per dripline length and control AFV automatic shutdown. Experimental results showed that AFDM can be used for designing AFDS with acceptable accuracy.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of electrochemical treatment (ECT) in reducing biofilm formation in agricultural water distribution systems. ECT effectively mitigated biofilm formation by reducing fixed-biofilm biomass and shifting bacterial community structures in the biofilm. The decrease in bacterial diversity and changes in dominant species were responsible for the decline in extracellular polymer substances and biofilm biomass.
