Summary: Our study highlights the importance of understanding management factors that drive soil biota in cropping systems. Tillage practices were found to have a greater impact on soil biota than specific cropping systems, while no-tillage generally had positive effects on soil microbial activity and earthworm abundance. Additionally, feed and biogas cropping systems were shown to increase microbial activity and diversity under no-tillage conditions, likely due to higher crop diversity and alternative nutrient sources.

Summary: In order to better manage soil-borne oomycetes, a long-term field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of tillage and crop rotation on oomycete communities. It was found that no tillage and crop rotation both influenced the diversity and structure of the fungal community, and the interaction effects of tillage and rotation made it more complex to manage these pathogens.

Summary: This study found that freshwater mussels have an impact on microbial community structure and function in stream sediment, and this impact is influenced by nutrient concentrations. Mussels can change the composition of sediment microbial communities, and the changes vary under different nutrient conditions. Mussels may promote functional redundancy in sediment microbial communities and control biogeochemical processes under changing nutrient conditions.

Summary: The soil bacterial microbiome plays a crucial role in ecosystem functioning. Organic fertilization can enhance the resistance and resilience of bacterial communities in extreme drought and subsequent rewetting compared to conventional fertilizers. This study indicates that organic fertilization can enhance the stability of the soil microbiome and ensure the recovery of specific bacterial-driven ecosystem functions after rewetting.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different reductive soil disinfestation (RSD) regimes on the fractionation of soil cadmium (Cd) and its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that all RSD-related regimes decreased the exchangeable Cd fraction and transformed it into unexchangeable Cd fractions. The RSD regime with Hermetia illucens L. (HI) feces treatment had the greatest reduction rate, which was attributed to the enrichment of functional genera associated with Cd fixation and iron reduction. In addition, the microbial community composition and structure were changed by the soil disinfestation regimes, which played a critical role in the changes of Cd fraction. Soil pH and organic material were identified as the main abiotic factors, while microbial groups such as Bacteroidetes, Hydrogenedentes (Hydrogenispora), Ascomycota, Acidobacteria, and Verrucucomicrobia were identified as key biotic factors for Cd conversion and immobilization.

Summary: This study revealed the accumulation of microbial necromass carbon and its contribution to soil organic carbon (SOC) under different fertilization regimes in rice paddy soil. Fungal necromass accounted for the majority of microbial necromass, especially in mineral fractions. The physical protection mechanism in intra-microaggregate POM (iPOM) and mineral fractions played a significant role in storing microbial necromass carbon.

Summary: The study shows that the functioning of soil microorganisms strongly depends on soil nutrient concentrations in the forest sites studied. In nutrient-poor sites, soil microorganisms were more stressed in pure and mixed coniferous forests, especially in Douglas-fir. In contrast, microbial structure and functional indicators in beech forests varied little with site conditions, likely due to ample root-derived resources provided by beech.

Summary: The study introduces a SIP approach that significantly reduces cross-feeding in complex microbial communities by continuously exposing microbial cells to isotopically labeled substrate on a membrane filter. This approach removes metabolites and degradation products constantly, preventing the consumption of secondary substrates, thus allowing for the distinction between primary consumers and other members of microbial food webs.

Summary: A theoretical calculation model was used to assess the fuel consumption of various forage harvesting methods, validated with field measurements. Variables such as yield level, working width, and transportation distance were found to have significant effects on fuel consumption. Increasing working width and windrowing were recommended to decrease fuel consumption, with self-loading forage wagon being the most energy efficient method but sensitive to transportation distance.

Summary: Population isolates, like those in Finland, provide valuable insights for genetic research due to the concentration of deleterious alleles in low-frequency variants. FinnGen aims to study the genome and health data of 500,000 Finnish individuals, enabling the identification of new associations and the exploration of their implications for common diseases. The study identified 30 new associations and 2,733 genome-wide significant associations, highlighting the power of bottlenecked populations in uncovering disease biology.

Summary: Crop growth within agricultural parcels can be uneven, even with even management. Aerial images can determine vegetation presence and variability, but the reasons for uneven growth are less studied. This study evaluated the relationship between drone image data and field/soil quality indicators. The results showed that soil/field indicators can effectively explain spatial variability in drone images, which can be utilized for cultivation planning and field parcel evaluation.

Summary: Protomyces is a poorly studied genus of yeast-like fungi with controversial species relationships. A new species, P. arabidopsidicola sp. nov., was discovered in Arabidopsis thaliana and suggested to be distinct from other Protomyces species based on genomic, morphological, and physiological characteristics. It was also proposed that Protomyces may not be strictly associated with its previously recognized host plants.
