Degradation of aqueous organic pollutants using an Fe2O3/WO3 composite photocatalyst as a magnetically separable peroxymonosulfate activator

Nguyen Thi Thao Nguyen, Anh Quoc Khuong Nguyen, Min Sik Kim, Changha Lee, Saewung Kim, Jungwon Kim

Summary: This study developed a cost-effective method for separating and recovering nanomaterials for water treatment using magnetically separable iron oxide/tungsten oxide composites. The Fe2O3/WO3 composite with a specific ratio was found to be optimal for PMS activation, efficiently degrading various organic pollutants under visible light irradiation. Additionally, complete degradation of 4-chlorophenol was achieved for up to five cycles when the Fe2O3/WO3 composite was reused after recovery using a magnet.

Reconciling Observed and Predicted Tropical Rainforest OH Concentrations

Daun Jeong, Roger Seco, Louisa Emmons, Rebecca Schwantes, Yingjun Liu, Karena A. McKinney, Scot T. Martin, Frank N. Keutsch, Dasa Gu, Alex B. Guenther, Oscar Vega, Julio Tota, Rodrigo A. F. Souza, Stephen R. Springston, Thomas B. Watson, Saewung Kim

Summary: This study presents OH observations in the Amazonas region of Brazil, which showed lower OH concentrations compared to other tropical forest photochemical environments. By using different chemical mechanisms, the study finds that all mechanisms were able to explain the measured OH concentrations within instrumental uncertainty. Further investigations are needed to understand the discrepancies in radical chemistry in the tropical rainforest.

Airborne estimation of SO2 emissions rates from a coal-fired power plant using two top-down methods: A mass balance model and Gaussian footprint approach

Jeonghwan Kim, Beom-keun Seo, Taehyoung Lee, Jongho Kim, Saewung Kim, Gwi-Nam Bae, Gangwoong Lee

Summary: In this study, two top-down methods, mass balance and Gaussian footprint, were used to determine SO2 emissions rates from a coal power plant in Korea. The mass balance method significantly underestimated the emissions rates in the first two flights due to insufficient transects and high background SO2 levels, while the Gaussian footprint method offered improved accuracy in all flights. The Gaussian footprint method was less affected by atmospheric stability and provided accurate estimates of stack-level emissions rates.

Potential Implications of the Sesquiterpene Presence over the Remote Marine Boundary Layer in the Arctic Region

Keyhong Park, Blanca Rodriguez, Jerry Thomas, Dasa Gu, Miming Zhang, Chinmoy Sarkar, Alex Guenther, Saewung Kim

Summary: We conducted airborne and shipborne measurements of reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over the North Pacific and the Arctic Ocean, focusing on the distribution of biogenic VOCs emitted by phytoplankton. Unlike on land, isoprene and monoterpenes, the dominant and second largest BVOC emissions from terrestrial ecosystems, were mostly below the detection limit. However, we consistently detected sesquiterpenes over the Arctic Ocean. Our analysis of sorbent cartridge samples collected during Arctic cruises showed the presence of sesquiterpenes at tens of ppt levels, with concentrations positively correlated with quantitative indicators of ocean biological activities. Further investigations on the emission and atmospheric transformation processes of sesquiterpenes in the marine boundary layer are therefore needed.

Sulfuric acid in the Amazon basin: measurements and evaluation of existing sulfuric acid proxies

Deanna C. Myers, Saewung Kim, Steven Sjostedt, Alex B. Guenther, Roger Seco, Oscar Vega Bustillos, Julio Tota, Rodrigo A. F. Souza, James N. Smith

Summary: Sulfuric acid is an important factor in new particle formation, but its measurement is challenging. This study presents the first measurements of sulfuric acid in the Amazon basin, showing similar concentrations to those in Finland but no correlation with global radiation. There is minimal difference in sulfuric acid between wet and dry seasons. Existing proxies are ineffective in estimating nighttime sulfuric acid, and proxies based on boreal forest data are recommended for all-day estimates.

Impact of heat stress on foliar biogenic volatile organic compound emission and gene expression in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seedlings

Sanjeevi Nagalingam, Roger Seco, Kirill Musaev, Chhandak Basu, Saewung Kim, Alex Guenther

Summary: This study investigates the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in heat-stressed tomato seedlings, finding that some compounds have higher emissions than predicted. Methyl salicylate emissions show different responses to heat stress compared to other compounds. The emitted compounds primarily come from plant storage pools, which are sufficient to sustain emissions for several days to months.

Unexplored volatile organic compound emitted from petrochemical facilities: implications for ozone production and atmospheric chemistry

Summary: A compound identified as ketene was observed in emission plumes from a petrochemical facility in South Korea, with high mixing ratios and significant implications for local photochemistry. Further studies on the atmospheric fate and photooxidation of ketene are necessary to enhance our understanding of VOC OH reactivity and tropospheric O-3 production.

Summary: The KORUS-AQ field study conducted in 2016 provided a multi-perspective view of air quality conditions in South Korea through the use of aircraft, ground-based networks, and ships, along with air quality forecast models. The study also served as a test bed for future air quality observing strategies involving geostationary satellite instruments.

Summary: OH reactivity observations in a suburban forest of the Seoul metropolitan area during KORUS-AQ 2016 found an average OH reactivity of 30.7 +/- 5.1 s(-1), with calculated OH reactivity of 11.8 +/- 1.0 s(-1). Additional OH reactivity was mainly from VOC oxidation products, accounting for 42.0% of the total measured OH reactivity.
